That price is absolutely ridiculous.

Consider some of the really good moneymakers in the music gaming category (pretty much the easiest way besides redemption to hit big at an arcade):

DDR Supernova(2): From Betson, roughly 15,000. Granted, their cabinet design is not much removed from the original, it uses cheap parts. Now, 15k is really expensive considering . . .

Pump It Up NX2: An 'FX' cabinet sporting a big plasma screen and revamped speaker system will run you around ELEVEN thousand dollars. Top that off with the best quality platform on any arcade dancing game, and it's a wonder why places still bother with DDR. If you go with the 'GX' model (now discontinued because of monitor problems), you got the same pad, a DDR-esque cabinet, but better sound and a bigger, sharper screen for only about $8,000.

beatmaniaIIDX: The mother of all music games. Huge widescreen monitor (variety of flavors, preferrably CRT for timing). Bose speaker system. Rumbling bass platform that you stand on. LED marquee for in-game messages. Really, the greatest experience you will ever have playing a music game. Last I checked, $20,000.

So I'm really, really, really baffled why a fighting game wants to cost $23,000. Especially compared to hi-tech, specialized music games that already make tons of cash.

If it keeps that price tag for the US release, it's not going very far.

@arstal: Arcades are dying in Japan as well. Pachinko/pachi-slot parlors are releasing more low-price slots, sort of like the penny slots you see in casinos... Medal games are one of the main sources of revenues for arcades, and this scheme is sucking them up dry from what I hear.

Online gaming can, and probably will, take off in the near future in Japan considering how easy it is to get fiber-optics internet access there. While we're struggling with our pitiful Comcast $50 internet connections that's dead 30% of the time they're paying $20-30 for something like 10mbps download/10mbps upload. I keep seeing people bitching about lag in CoD and such playing from Japan against US opponents, but it's pretty obvious they're just not used to it -- unless both ends have really shitty lines, it's no worse than those times in the 90's where you had to use POTS to connect to 300-400 ping servers.

Japanese arcades will, since Japanese houses tend to be too cramped for home playing in-person, and on-line play hasn't taken off. There's also an intrinsic value in arcades for Japan that doesn't exist for the US anymore due to incompetent arcade owners.

As for some of the other questions; A new cabinet nowadays can be anywhere above $1000. Dedicated cabinets usually cost more, but plug and play JAMMA cabs can be found really cheap if you look in the right places.

While many of the newer cabinets do indeed depreciate in value reasonably quickly, the classics (Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, F-Zero AX, etc) often appreciate in value. Even if you don't want to run an arcade, they're a worthwhile investment for some.

/Still can't wait for my SF IV and Raiden IV to be delivered.

Although the voltage is slightly different (Japanese power is 100 volts, as opposed to 110 in the US), I've found that my Japanese Saturn works just fine on US power, and the plugs are similar so you don't even need an adapter. Arcade cabinets use switching power supplies anyway, so there would not be an issue.

That must be the price for a high-end dedicated cabinet with a huge monitor on it. Granted, even kits are ridiculously expensive when they first come out, but for that much money you could buy five Stern pinball machines. The prices do also come down fairly qucikly after the stuff has been on the market for a while too (at least for the PCBs) but given the hardcore nature of fighting game fans these days, I suspect the vast majority of these will be staying in the arcades for quite a while.

Does anybody know how much it takes to produce an arcade cabinet? Anyway, nothing matters anymore now that Brawl is out. Why do developers even make fighting games anymore? In fact, why do developers make games other than Smash Bros? Personally, I've cut eating and peeing out of my schedual in order to make more room for Brawl. That aside, this game looks cool, but I've never been enough of a Street Fighter fan to get excited about it.
