If everyone wants to keep the Dreamcast scene alive, I suggest buying a copy of Feet of Fury, or even Cool Herders, another fine DC game over at the GOAT Store.

@Doomstalk: Sega had it's own library of development tools for the DC. The use of WinCE was optional and was mainly used in windows game ports where it made the conversion of direct-x games easy, very rarely was it used for games that were made exclusively for the console though.

Sega has a history of using the hitachi sh series of risc processors. The saturn had 2 sh2's. The sh4 was the most powerful processor during it's time and being that it was a risc processor capable of highly intensive floating point calculations it was definately made for demanding graphical applications in mind and had no relation to the x86 intel or amd cpu's which were still horrible bottlenecks for systems that were made for demanding graphical apps.

The gpu was from videologic/nec, which was the first gpu to detect and only render what was visible to the player onscreen, meaning for example in a fps game if you weren't viewing the backside of a person you were shooting; it wasn't being rendered so essentially they could get away with using half the bandwidth that a tradional gpu would have to use to render the same scene. This is what made it so efficient and possible to pull off games like quake3 which at the time pc gamers laughed when it was announced but when it was launched it actually had a higher polygon count on the dc. The only way for this gpu to work well was if games were specifically coded for it, so when the card was released for pc's it didn't do well because pc game developers weren't so willing to re-code thier games for this new gpu or release hefty patches so the videocard sucked in benchmarks.

Ati then started using a similar rendering technology with thier radeon cards called hyper z-buffer depth er something.

escopr

Sega's gone through a few strange stages. With the Deramcast, developers seemed to have free rein to develop all sorts of innovative, offbeat titles that were lots of fun but never mainstream successes. Now, marketing and business folks have much more say in what gets developed, and so you've got brain training knockoffs and mascot games.

What they need to do is what Nintendo has done: get a seasoned developer and put them in charge. Then instead of having developers do whatever they feel like or having the suits shove unoriginal ideas down their throats, Sega can develop original concepts that are appealing and accessible.

I miss the time when Sega was more-or-less Nintendo's equal (except a little cooler) and I hope they eventually get back on track.

ragingmime

Dreamcast had a whole bunch of arcade releases and that's what i personally liked. So all they need is, arcade ports, good controllers, and perhaps some system of playing older arcade games etc.

Failing that, they could just release the NAOMI, 2, or whatever in a more user friendly form.

@Doomstalk:

What you're saying is not true. The DC was the first pc-like console. The way it was designed is like the way a pc is designed and with off the shelf parts. That it uses another type of cpu is not relevant. Consoles before it had very different architectures. All consoles after DC except for PS2 have been pc-like. Note that they all use PPC chips that are also not meant for pc's even though Apple did so for years.

Win CE still exists and is not the same as windows mobile. WM uses a CE basis but there are many other implementations of CE. Whether or not CE is designed for embedded systems is not relevant since it allowed for easy pc ports.

The SH4 was not intended for embedded use in the first place, it was promoted as an ideal chip for a games console! There were embedded versions though.

The DC was not like a set-top box design but the Dreamcast-on-chip was integrated in some at the end of it's life.

In relation to the article: What is this guy talking about custom hardware and arcade boards these days being just consoles? Sega invented this. There was Dreamcast for home and Naomi for arcade, which was the same except for double ram and the ability to be "stacked".

TrekVogel

So, I've gotta say, I've never played a Dreamcast. I can't seem to find a preowned one anywhere. I've got a copy of Fusion Frenzy that I found at a charity shop for like £1.50 but that#s it.

Bernard McGraw

I love the games that Sega made (past tense). I agree with Cryptic Allusions's statement partially, Sega should keep making great games like they used to that were unique in gameplay and in theme, in fact to me it made gaming more of an art than just another novelty. But if Sega made a console, all those games would be on one console, which would benefit the consumer who are looking for Sega games. It's like Nintendo, you want Nintendo type of games made by Nintendo, get a Nintendo platform. Now if you want all the Sega games, you have to go multiplatform and own almost all the platforms. Sonic came out on the PS3 and XBox360 in one type of game, and another different Sonic game on the Wii, that's a lot of money to spend if you want to play the Sega games.

SDreamer

@Bernard McGraw: haha! Thank you...I'm sure I'm not worthy of the praise, but Dan certainly is.
@fruitsofherwomb: I did save a couple of kittens, as a matter of fact. Adopted one from our local animal shelter, and another from a random cat with a litter whose family could not support all of them.

And I forgot to mention this - @JeffPaine: we didn't ever finish the 2nd game we were working on (Tryptonite), but we are exceedingly close to finishing our 2nd game for the DC: "Donk - Samurai Duck". That will be our last foray on the platform, because it's just not that profitable to release a game made by 2 guys (plus a few interns) in their spare time.

You can keep up with us on our website if you get curious! [www.cagames.com]

The Dreamcast was awesome. I wish it all boiled down to games in the industry, but it doesn't. I mean Dreamcast had games and everyone was so caught up on fake Sony propaganda.

Its alot differnt now, what with gamers 'not caring' about graphics and how many 'pixels' a game pushes.

Alot of problems accord around the Dreamcast era that led it to its demise. Its sad, but better to have had the console then never having it at all.

fruitsofherwomb

@Sinnbox: Not really. The CPU was a Hitachi SH4 which was designed pretty much exclusively for embedded systems. The operating system was Windows CE (recently re-christened Windows Mobile) which, again, is designed for the embedded environment. The Dreamcast has more in common with a set-top box than it does with a PC.

Doomstalk
