On a serious note, I highly doubt this really happened as this woman claims. The only reason, I believe, to go to the media is to try to be compensated for the "emotional damage" this kids endured.

If this did happen, it's not Microsofts fault. The only 2 people to blame here is the perv on the other end and the mom for not setting parental controls. I'm 24 and even I get offended by some of the stuff I hear spewn from the mouths of other Live players. I wouldn't let my son play on Live unsupervised until he's AT LEAST 16 years old.

When will parents finally take some responsibility? It's our jobs as parents to protect our children from these kinds of things and no one is ever willing to say

Blaming things happens all too quickly, and most of us don't know the full details of the story. Honestly, though, from what the story says at face-value, I can't see anything that leads me to believe she was a bad parent. Not every parent can be well-versed in Live's cans and can'ts, etc.

The 360 wasn't the offender here but it and it's parent company are treated like the criminal. We have enough sense to not blame the car company or Caltrans (for those of you in California), or even the Miller Brewing company every time someone is killed by a drunk driver. We don't blame Verizon, AT&t, or even AOL every time a child molester sweet-talks or chats a child into flying across the country. We don't even blame Seagate, IBM, or even Cisco every time a hacker steals our precious private data sitting in some data center somewhere. Why is it that it's socially acceptable to blame Game companies when things like this happens? I don't think it's Game companies that are being targeted but rather emergent technologies or applications there of.

The public at-large is ignorant of these things and when you clearly failed to handle a product such as this correctly, it's human nature and socially acceptable to blame the product. Only when people become more accustomed to using these products will we do what we do best (as people with knowledge) which is ridicule those who would be foolish enough to use a product unwisely. Xbox is just foreign enough to be blamed for societies woes along with the rest of the video game industry. Rest assured, just like cell phones and bad drivers, when the product becomes more mainstream, people like this woman will be raked against the hot coal of public scrutiny instead of being given a pulpit to preach her stupidity.

re: the violence argument, it depends. Halo, for all its headshots and whatnot, can seem more like a virtual paintball game. But letting someone's kids play condemned 2 or something, I agree, is stupid. It goes along the same lines, though, with the parent explaining it to the kids, and also the time at which they are exposed to it.

As for the news, at least in America, you get to HEAR about a lot of the violence in the world, but you don't really see it. Plus, kids don't often watch the news.

Again, I agree, as a parent it's your main job to raise your kids - not Xbox Live, not customer support, etc. etc. But part of raising your kids is shielding them from things like extreme violence, and making sure that the things the kids play with don't become a gateway to things like an old man's genitals, or whatever it was. I'm just not as willing to accept that it's the woman's fault outright. As far as we know, her calling support was just one step in a series of dealing with the problem.

It can cause, in children that aren't given the proper guidance, just as much of a negative traumatic effect as anything else. It also isn't all *fake*. Watch the news anytime recently?

Ridiculous argument. As a parent, it should be your duty to help your child to learn and grow and be able to accept and deal with the emotions and influences that their lives will bring them into contact with. *NOT* shielding them from the things they'll be dealing with as adults will only serve to help the make the transition that much easier. That doesn't mean involving them in such things, but it does mean being smart about what they are coming into contact with. Having common sense and understanding about what they are coming into contact with, and not over-reacting.

It's unfortunate that the only way many people seem to be able to deal with problems and issues these days is by acting the victim instead of being a part of the solution.

Why is it whenever I join some online game on xbox live it's like no one has a freakin mic. Yes I actually want players who talk and communicate freely so I know what's goin on, but instead I get "sup" at the beginning and "this sucks" at the end. So maybe I'm lucky I don't get 5 year olds screaming in headsets, but some teamwork would be nice.

Second, sending pictures. What a useless freakin feature. I think I've only had one kid ever send me a picture and it was to like advertise some gaming website he wanted to try and start. That's about it.

I just filed a crap load of complaints over Xbox Live.
