I have a Wii. I have waited a long time to play Brawl (went to the video store to rent it many times and it wasn't there). I finally rented a copy of brawl and I was excited (It has no scratches or anything) I put it in my Wii system, and it doesn't play.... I guess I have to send my Wii in for a repair now ><;;

Tonymontana655

Has anyone with a modded Wii sent theirs in to be cleaned? And if so did you get your Wii back? I recall nintendo having something that if the system was previously opened the would deny any further repairs. So I was just wondering.

Lusien

@comedy: My bet is that all the people experiencing the problem are either:
a) in a house/room where smoking is involved;
b) do not put their game CDs in the box when not in the console (i.e. the disc stays on a table, or on the floor, and all kinds of filth get stuck to it, then gets into the console);
c) have a very dusty room.

I'm pretty sure c) is a minor issue here, it's really more a) and especially b) that are the problem. Then again, it probably is related in a poor choice of manufacturer for the cd drive materials too.

Mokona

I have everything that supports progressive scan set to progressive scan. I have an upconverting DVD player that I use at a 4:3 aspect ratio for watching 4:3 programming, and it keeps all settings available. That's with 480p, obviously.

@DaiMacculate: It's a Philips 42" plasma television. Like I said, the only really annoying thing about the actual situation is that I need to manually switch it to widescreen on that particular input. The television saves the setting per input, so it's not a big deal, as I only use my Wii on that input (the rest of the consoles are on a switch that's plugged into the side AV ports). It's just disturbing that I seem to be the only person in existence who was having this issue. My roommate thought that I was insane, but I pay very close attention whenever I'm dealing with video-related settings and whatnot on nearly anything.

@zeropoint.0: Amusingly, this is something that people should've realized as soon as the concept of controller extensions was uttered. As soon as I learned about the Nunchuk, I knew that the Wii Remote would prove to be woefully inadequate for certain genres.

Even sadder is the fact that we were told to imagine a controller that would allow you to play all games from the past, as well as those to come. Apparently, that meant that we'd need to buy four different controllers in order to do what you can do with one on other consoles. And some of the motion controls could've been done as simply context-senstive button presses on other consoles. Playing MP3C on Wii, the most stressful part is grappling bosses. The bosses, themselves, are easy, but the freaking motion controls blow in some respects. Even NMH is guilty of this at times, although I love the game.

kubevubin

Thank God my copy is able to work on the wii, but the load times are unbearable as some have posted here. It's leaving me to question whether I do have a problem or not. There been times i thought my wii crashed due to load times.

Btw, anyone else finding C button as a jump button severely limiting, I've reconfigured but I'm tempted to drop an extra $50 to buy new gamecube controllers, but it just seems odd to me to revert back an old controller, when the new one is supposed to be so ground breaking.

zeropoint.0

The dirty lens thing is a complete load of BS!! I know somebody who bought his Wii literaly a week before Brawl came out and he had the problem also. Is Nintendo shipping Wiis with dirty lenses?? BS!!! You have to ship it to the Big N to clean it?? BS!! There is a much larger problem going on here. If it was something like a dirty lens, then wouldn't you have to keep shipping it back to Nintendo every few weeks or months for "cleaning"??? They have hardware issuse that they aren't admiting to. I would rather have them say it was a faulty laser that has trouble reading Dual Layer and that shipping back to them is to replace it. The "dirty lens" crap is a flat out lie!!

Mr.SithNinja

I believed in you, Nintendo. I sold all my other consoles in your name and to play your games. My reward is having to send my Wii to you for the second damn time?

@kubevubin: Heh, that widescreen thing does sound annoying. What model/Manufacturer of TV, if you don't mind me asking? With the exception of some noticeable jagging from upscaling (my TV doesn't have a 480p native mode) in some games I haven't had any real annoyances yet, knock on wood.

Like I posted on page 1 though, mine is a Launch Day Wii, so unless its determined that they just made the launch ones spiff and then went cheap on every subsequent shipment I would guess more like early-mid 2007 is when the "cheap" and "defective" drives might have gone in, since thats when the clamor and demand was getting really bad, Nintendo supply constraint conspiracy theories were the order of the day, etc.

I just hope Nintendo corrects it going forward; if I/Torgen are right and Asterra is wrong about DVD9 (could go either way) games in the future I don't want this to become a regular fixture of Wii posts on Kotaku ;)

DaiMacculate

@DaiMacculate: Of course. And Nintendo sure isn't gonna admit that low-grade components were used in older versions of Wii (which is sad, considering how freaking overpriced it was - and still is). I own a Wii, but I really don't feel as though Nintendo is terribly honest about its "repairs" process. They seem to have made some mistakes in planning this console, and they offer simply services such as this to cover it up.

I'm probably gonna come off as crazy, but I know for a fact that my Wii was outputting a widescreen image before sending it out to Nintendo for repairs. I realize that it is and always has been anamorphic widescreen, but I know for a fact that my Wii, not my TV, was doing the actual stretching of the image. Why? Because my television grays out all non-widescreen options whenever a video source is outputting widescreen.

Needless to say, it was driving me crazy that my TV no longer automatically switched to widescreen. This eventually made sense to me, but still strikes me as very annoying. I was playing only MP3C and RE4, so the simple stretching must've been just enough to stress Wii's GPU to the point where it was an issue that needed to be dealt with. I realize that I still get the same image quality if my TV does the stretching, but man...I can't seem to uncover any information about this, and it drives me crazy.

kubevubin

Except..mine works fine and so does the other 5 people I know who've bought Brawl.

@Asterra: Nintendo has an improving relationship with SquareEnix, Bandai-Namco has already announced two RPGs for Wii, and Nintendo themselves bought Monoloth Soft (of Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos fame). One of those three is going to end up making a big RPG for the Wii. Maybe if it would have been a single DVD-9, two DVD-5s in a flapper case would work (although the third parties might be miffed to have to go back and write disc-swapping code). Any bigger than that and we'll see DVD-9s again.

Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc

Does that extend to just Torgen, or everybody on Kotaku who thinks you're completely wrong about this? Because if it ain't just Torgen, I'd be stocking up on Coke Points or Gift Certificates or whatever now, there WILL be another DL Wii game in the next 3 years, there won't be a ton but there will be at least one at some point.

As others have noted the PS2 had similar issues in its first couple hardware revs, yet many of the later PS2 games used DVD9, I can't imagine Nintendo letting 3% or less of its ever-growing userbase dictate what games it releases and how.

DaiMacculate

@Torgen thinks AAA means "Costs $60": I don't think I have to spell it out for you; rather, I believe the show of obstinance is an effort to stick to your guns. So be it. I'm confident that most people will also be able to read between the lines. My "claims," as you choose to label them, were obviously stated in the spirit of a typical blog talkback, but they were, I submit, logical conclusions:

1) What I actually said was that the drive Nintendo chose to utilize (and/or its manufacturer setting) is of a quality so substandard that its ability to read dual-layer discs - a standard capability of all DVD drives - was compromised to the point of what I would call effective non-usability.

2) No more DVD9 games will be made. I did state this. SSBB is proving to be an expensive ordeal for Nintendo, despite _everything_ in Nintendo's power to minimize the issue, including a unique pressing in gold. Ultimately, what's taking up most of the disc is FMV, which could easily have been largely rendered in realtime for a lesser visual impact but obviously a complete circumvention of the issue. Now, in spite of the fair odds that Nintendo will henceforth be manufacturing Wiis that are 100% capable of dealing with DL discs, that doesn't change the fact that if they release another DL game, they WILL endure the same consequences. So, tell you what. Get back to me in three years, and if they've released another DL Wii game by then, I owe you a coke.

As for the percentage mentioned in the link I provided, a correction is required: The Nintendo rep was the one who claimed 3%. It doesn't really need mentioning that the softening of ill-tiding data is standard practice and certainly to be expected. Remember, the 360's RRoD issue was once insisted to be a rare phenomenon blown out of proportion by the vocal nature of those affected. It took a long time for some hard data to be exposed, silencing most of the remaining apologists.

Asterra

@Asterra: That doesn't establish that the Wii's drive wasn't meant to handle dual layer discs, or that no future Wii game will ever use a dual layer disc again, both of which were claimed by you.
If you have to send in your Wii for cleaning, and when you get it back you put it in the same place it got dirty before, yeah it's going to get dirty again. Or they could just clean it for you again the next time.
And it's not like they sent Wiis back unrepaired if the reason it wasn't reading the disc wasn't needing cleaning, even though the warranty is only 1 year.
Weren't retailers giving buyers a flyer explaining the 'cleaning'? So it's hard to see someone not knowing.

Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc

@Torgen thinks AAA means "Costs $60": You seem to like references. See: [www.destructoid.com] There is a revelation, straight from a Japanese employee, that the most severe "cleaning" operations involve drive modification or replacement. Since we already know what the difference is between SSBB and the hundreds of games that don't engender readability issues, it's not too difficult to put two and two together. The author also brings up an epiphanic point: If the issue is a dirty lens - ostensibly due to cigarette smoke but in any event a matter of the user's living conditions - does Nintendo's lens-cleaning operation include the magical ability to prevent the lens from ever requiring another send-in cleaning? A careful consideration of that question should enable some easy conclusions.

Also, the target consumer of an individual game on the Wii does not come into play in this case (and in general, for that matter); if it has Mario in the title, it's going to sell, regardless of its actual meritability (see: Sonic & Mario). If it has Pikachu on the cover, bonus. If it is conspicuously packaged with a peripheral, extra bonus. If Timmy knows darn well that it's the biggest game his Wii will ever have, he will make sure Mommy knows.

Asterra

Even if we assumed all 226 were having the problem and divided that by the sheer number of preorders of the game (not counting those who picked it up on the fly), that still sounds like an acceptable ratio to me.

mexicantvdinner

Alright... this is going to be the dumbest thing I've EVER had to ask about being "stuck" in a game... but A.) I figured here would get the fastest/most-reliable responses possible and B.) NOW I'm worried the problem might be these issues and not just me being a dumbass.

So, here goes...

What button/button-combo is supposed to make the doors open in "Subspace Emissary" mode? I'm up to the very first part where you're Pit, and got to the very first door and I can't for the life of me make him go THROUGH the fucking thing. Pretty sure I pushed every button and/or sequence (I'm using the single remote sideways w/no nunchuck method, buttons reconfigured to roughly the setup of an NES default mode) and he just won't open the door. Am I missing something stupidly obvious or is my copy possible flawed?

ANY help would be appreciated.

moviebob

^^^^^ This worked for me ^^^^^^

Inserted/ejected it about 6 times, it's been fine since. This is on a launch day Wii, in a house with 4 smokers.

I haven't read any of the arguments against using one of these, but I guess some people are saying they won't work. But it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't; just because the actual DVD or CD track that leads the lens to the disc's brushes doesn't get "played" (you'll get the identical "Disc cannot be read" message as you get with SSBB failure), I think the brushes still go over the lense as it tracks on insertion, looking for something to play. I inserted/ejected it 5-6 times, and since then SSBB has worked flawlessly.

Risk of damage to the console is probably zero, the brushes are the slightest rubber nubs.

I predict we will see 3rd party Wii specific lens cleaners shortly, if not an official NOA version as more people report that this or something similar worked for them. It's actually surprising there's not one already...

VeeKaChu

@Shukaku: Loading slow, or FMV that skips, are symptomatic of data that is being read only by the grace of media data redundancy and/or many-fold attempts, on the part of the drive, to successfully read the disc. It is very well-established at this stage that the Wii's drive was not calculated to ever need to make use of a dual-layer DVD. What probably happened is the game was developed without this fact really having been underscored, and, when things got too far along to go back, it was decided that they would use gold in the pressing and hope for the best.

The issue was big enough in Japan, but it's really going to become a scandal in the US, because the target Wii consumer is not the sort of person who knows how to deal with the scenario where a game simply doesn't work, nor does the replacement from the store, nor does the second replacement. A more worldly individual (a gamer) would have a better chance of either realizing what's wrong or at least knowing that there's probably a better solution than hoping a replacement game will work. That's what will cause this problem to explode in the news media.

Asterra

The Wii is sensitive machine.

On launch my Wii's online didn't work. Someone on IGN told me to use the format system memory option to "fix" it and it "did".

I can only assume that in the process it got reverted to some weird default state. I was able to access the Wii shop, but quickly discovered my account had fused with someone else's...? I had more points than I put in, and when I checked the history I found purchases for games and I was able to download them with a few clicks. This mysterious stranger and I had access to each other's points and games, which was bitching because that's the only way I ever would have played the very awesome Wario's Woods.

Somehow Nintendo noticed this though and shut my online down and I had to get a new Wii shipped to me. I did get a free Wiimote out of the hassle, so in retrospect it worked out, but it was my first lesson in just how thin the Wii's construction is. You might use the playing card simile featured in My cousin Vinny. It looks solid for what it is but if you're fortune/unlucky enough to see the right angle you realize everything could fall apart at any minute in any random way.

This is just a more predictable variant of that. Probably has to do with the fact that the DVD drive is always open to particles unlike the 360 or PS3. Or maybe even Nintendo being inexperience with dual layer, maybe they burnt it in a way not conducive to efficient reading. Who knows, I have as much respect for Nintendo as I have laughs at their incompetence in many of the more technical areas.

Never forget that the NES was infinitely less consistent than the Wii though. Really the only difference here is that it is much harder for the Wii to get too dirty to read a game in the first place, but once it gets to that point it isn't necessarily as simple as blowing in the slot to clear the particles.

Although, if your system already won't play Smash Brothers and it is a choice between DIY and waiting on Nintendo, I'd say a little blow job on the slot couldn't hurt.

Bobby McPresscott

@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: The way it's supposed to work is you put the cleaning disc in once and it spins it enough in a single cycle to get the job done. Having to put it in six times (with it trying and failing to read it each time) is a little ad-hoc, but apparently it does the trick. That said, don't cleaning discs usually use the whole disc? If the Wii is trying and failing to read it, it's probably just looking at the start of the disc, which means the cleaning bristles there are getting overused, while the ones further out aren't getting used at all.

Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc

Why are you people not understanding what is being asked? what part of fucking "similar solution" do you not understand? Maybe I should have said "alternative" instead? Would you understand that? Or maybe...instead of similar solution I should have said "use water, go rape yourself, sucks to be you." Flame bait retarded comments would have been understood I guess...oh well...

@freakotaku14: thanks for providing us with an alternative to the oh-so-gay method of sending the Wii to Nintendo. I don't give a rat's ass what Nintendo says, there has to be an easier solution to cleaning the lens without sending it back. It's a cheap ass Wii not a uber console like the PS3 that's pushing blu-ray. It has a gimped DVD-9 drive. Why would "special equipment" be needed to clean the lens? If this happened to me I'd make with the canned air and hit some forums for a better solution than shipping and handling.

Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.

Old news is ooooooooooooooooold.

Just update your system.

If it still doesn't work, it's probably because you're smoking or your Wii is dusty. Nintendo will probably set up a free Wii fixing-service like they did in Japan for consoles plagued with that problem. Dusty/smoky Wiis have a harder time reading dual-layered discs, and modded Wiis will especially have trouble sometimes.

FinalFettuccinni

I tried canned air, washing the disc with both cold/warm/mildly soapy water, re-orienting the Wii horizontally, intercooler, and finally it worked after this- [www.memorex.com]

I inserted it six or so times (listening for spinning in each case, though of course the Wii reported "Cannot read..."), and after that the first time I inserted SSBB it was fine. Been working ever since, for about three hours now.

You may not say it in public, but there's no doubt in my mind that most people, myself included, would have liked Windwaker better if it had been in the style Nintendo had originally stipulated earlier on with their famous Link vs. Ganon duel footage. It was a famous letdown, and TP was widely regarded as a merciful return (of sorts) to what most people wanted.

@HAGE: I find it funny too because while I put Windwaker at the bottom of my list of 3D Zelda games it has absolutely nothing to do with the art style/design, which was in fact excellent. I wouldn't mind if they went back to it for the next one, as long as I don't have to sail anywhere extensively I'll be fine ;)

Anybody wonder if this Smash problem is at all a factor of the incredible demand for the Wii worldwide? I say that not to excuse the issue, because as a 360 owner I'm about at my breaking point with any hardware quality issues, but that could be an explanation. It might be one manufacturer among the no doubt several that bid to put drives in the Wii, etc etc.

This is yet another reason Nintendo needs to "open" the USB ports, imagine if the temporary fix was just to plug in an external DVD and run the game from there. I'm sure it would take some work to get working that easily, but yeah. That and I shouldn't have to erase 2 N64 VC games just to make room for a Brawl save file, give me some type of USB memory expansion, even if its just an overpriced dongle.

Unlike some fellow 360 owners who just shrug and make the (in)appropriate animal sacrifice to the dark lords of XBL every time somebody has a RRoD or other 360 hardware problem that doesn't yet affect them, I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to those affected by this problem. Hope it gets fixed quickly and remains fixed, rather than becoming a huge ongoing debacle involving future Wii games as well.

DaiMacculate

They had to have traded off some quality for the ridiculous price of the Wii - even if it is only marginally better than the GC, there was new hardware which hadn't been done before.

I suspect that it is that the drive can only read Single Layer DVD's and this is an excuse to avoid lawsuits etc. The demand at launch and after could have required some spare's to be brought in.

@Torgen thinks AAA means "Costs $60": The two Zeldas for Gamecube is one thing that has me worried. Thanks to Miyamoto's vision, Zelda now comes in two flavors: Traditional, and Disney. Although it could be argued that TP was an amalgam of both. Still, if they release another Zelda for Wii, you can bet it will be in the patently unlikable Disney format. My guess, though, is that we won't see another Zelda on Wii, as they already reproduced the Disney style on the DS game.

Metroid was a special case because it's a property Nintendo doesn't care about (not popular in Japan). They let Westerners make the games, and were much looser with the credo of reinvention. That's why MP 1 & 2 (and indeed 3) are essentially identical, while you could never say that about the progression in Mario or Zelda.

I used the term "esoteric" in blanket fashion, covering games which are not largely regarded as Nintendo mainstays, and which certainly never saw the biggest sales. I don't think it could be argued that F-Zero GC was a triple-A title.

Asterra

The actual component for the PS3's slot-loading drive is several times bigger than the Wii's. Also, it plays CD's and DVD's, so the lense cleaners designed for those will operate. Not so on the Wii. The Wii does not play CDs or DVD movies... without that capability a store bought lens cleaner is pretty useless.

MantisDragon

@zanzibarlegend: Wow. That's crazy. I saw a lot of people get turned away from ebgames last night, leaving empty-handed. I'm surprised that people don't know how ebgames / Gamestop engineers shortages. I went over to WalMart (open 24/7) and picked up my nephew's copy with no hassles at all. Sheesh.

Ichinisan

@zanzibarlegend: I'll tell you one thing it does mean: There will be NO MORE (first party) DVD9 games for Wii. If that means the games will remain content-sparse, tough.

On the other hand.. after Mario Kart, what is left? Nintendo would have to break tradition and release TWO games covering the same property, if they plan to have any more big titles before the Wii is dead. And I don't count Pikmin, F-Zero, or other esoterics.

Asterra

@Torgen thinks AAA means "Costs $60": what the fuck man then just get a damn DVD cleaner. What are we talking about here? Nintendo is full of shit if they're telling us that Wii can't handle a simple $5 DVD lens cleaner because of the need for some uber equipment for the swanky lens in the Wii. Sounds suspect when the Wii isn't some gear that sporting the latest in techology. My PS3 has never had this retardo problem and it's slot loading so what's Nintendo's excuse? Could someone please tell us why a DVD lens cleaner wouldn't work or some similar solution?

Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.

@RevDenton: You should have called up Nintendo the first time you saw it. I never noticed just how bad the GPU in why Wii had gotten until Metroid Prime 3 came out. My Wii had been sitting in an entertainment center next to a 40" LCD that was basiclly a TV/space heater combo. Called up Nintendo, next day I had a UPS sticker to throw on a box, and a week later it was back this time not in the entertainment center.

MantisDragon

@SpartanQ77: RRoD results in a busted console. This is just a game that isn't working from a dirty lens. Who's the mindless fanboy? People that keep buying or sending in 360 after 360 or the people that actually like Brawl and want it to work?

Give me a break. Brawl is actually the best version of the three in the series. Better animation, better character models, better backgrounds, refined move list, more characters instead of palette swaps (as far as I can tell only a couple hours into it) If you don't like it then just pass and let us that do enjoy it.

Blowing a bit of compressed air in there won't hurt your system, and just might let you get your Brawl on TODAY.

Knoxximus (360/PSN)
