Oni.

So much potential in the concept, in retrospect I would rather it had died in development hell and spared me the bitter disappointment of the failed execution. I've never tried to like a game that much and still failed. Even though Halo is a pretty good game and its sequels decent, I still don't feel like I used to about Bungie, before Oni was released, even if they didn't control the way it ended up.

@Pornosaur: You may have one of the more interesting nominations I've read yet! If it weren't for Doom 3, wouldn't Paul Steed still be at id? And wouldn't id have made a game that could have actually stood its ground against the bohemoth that is Half-Life 2?

Anyway, yeah, I have to say, I'd unmake ET, and a lot of the games that Atari allowed onto its console, giving videogames such a horribly bad name that people almost stopped buying them.

Close second would have to be the Atari Jaguar. If only they had waited a little longer for technology that was a little more mature. Sure, they had the best Wolfenstein-style game of all time in Aliens Vs. Predator, a fun mech assault game in Iron Soldier, and a phenomenal shooter in Tempest 2000, but they just needed more of the magic that used to make Atari... Atari.

BTW, is anyone else noticing a shortage of 16-bit games on this thread? There are a few out there, but not many.

BtownDesignGuy

@Afore Notation: Sorry but Cross had an entirely different fell to it from Trigger not to mention the bastardization of the character of Schala, not to mention the ghosts of Crono, Marle and Lucca.

If you've ever read the source material for Chrono Cross, the text game Radical Dreamers, you'd see how much better it would have been.

The dungeons were boring and uninspiring and collecting all the characters for a single very lame finale was a huge disappointment.

The element allocation system was also badly designed.

@TheIrishNinja: You'll have to get back to me on how this experience goes for you, and who knows, I might come back being one of those who curse FFVII's name to the heavens while lauding FFVI as the Shakespeare of JRPGs--though to be fair, there is a big difference between me and most of the other boys and girls that flip their shit over FFVII; I don't think it is the best game of all time. I think it has many faults, but nonetheless it is the game that made me a gamer and I am hopelessly attatched to the characters, no matter what Square does to them (Dirge of Cerberus), for better or for worse (read: worse.)

Maybe I need to give Trigger another once-over as well, as I can't go long without playing an RPG for I fear I am medically dependant on leveling up and, have no new RPGs to play for a while. I think I'd rather see a remake of Trigger before a remake of VII, especially if they used those beautiful HD sprites developers are whipping out these days. Actually, I even think it would do well in full 3d as long as they made the visuals style over raw graphical power.

Anyways, I just rambled. Damn Daylight savings just slaughtered me.

Captain Internet

Here's one that I bet none of you would think of...

As a teen, I really loved the Spyro franchise. It was quirky, with great level design, compelling platforming gameplay, and fun enemies every which way. All three PSX entries were, in my opinion, outstanding. Most cite Ripto's Rage as the best one, but my personal preference was for Year of the Dragon, because of the interesting sub-characters.

Then the PS2 came around and, lo, there was a new Spyro game, which naturally got me excited. "Oooh, next-gen Spryo!" I was thinking about how cool everything would look and how the levels would be even larger and more detailed...and then I get a chance to rent it, and all I see is this dogshit opening world featuring a crappy camera and bland-as-can-be visuals, as well as a garbage story that I can't remember for the life of me, despite remembering the main plots of the other three games (no Joss Whedon here, but still memorable and entertaining).

So for me, I'd totally unmake Spryo: Enter the Dragonfly. It was pretty much the immediate ending of the franchise's significance to me and everyone else, though I will admit that it's made me remember Insomniac fondly enough that I respect pretty much any offering they've been a part of. Obviously, after Spyro, they moved onto Ratchet and Clank, which is why I owe it to myself to play those games, but I still wish they'd at least left the Spryo legacy in more capable hands.

Superhacker75mil

Descent 3. Or maybe Descent 2. First one was great... I remember thinking that it would spawn a great series of games. But then, they made the ship control too complicated, and ruined it.

Wow... so many selfish spoiled comments.
Most of them are about sucessful franchises that made possible gaming being as big as it is today.

As for me... I'll start with DAIKATANA.
Because it simply would be better if remained vaporware.

Most Sonic titles after the first ones... because they are just bad.

Doki Doki Majo Shinpan. Not because it's an "adult game" wannabe on DS, but because it sucks. I'd accept if it was a proper adult game, though. But truth is: It's so bad that it couldn't even generate real polemic around the theme.

I could say Actraiser 2... but I heard some people liked it. So it's not that I would undo it, but certainly unplay it in exchange for a proper Actraiser 2 with the whole gameplay.

X-COM 3 and up. Because the changes they made to it killed the series. X-COM UFO Defense was great, and Terror from the Deep was also nice... both had the same system.

Leisure Suit Larry 6 and up. And whatever game was responsible for killing creative adventure games such as Monkey Island (first 2), Indiana Jones, and some others. Because I loved them. Though I still didn't try the latest Sam & Max games... seems they are looking good.

Guess that's it. Must be more, but I can't quite remember right now...

Bokusatsu_Tenshi

They implemented those new controls so completely wrong.

Then everyone copied those awful controls, scratched their heads in bewilderment at the low sales, and determined from the results that the Wii would never do well with "hardcore" gamers.

Now, using the revolutionary Wiimote and Nunchuck combo almost a year and a half later, there are only two solid controlling FPS's on the Wii, and only one of them is actually a really good game.

What an unbelievable shame.

wonder6oy

I think saying the CD-i Zelda games would be too easy and too cheap. I'm gonna go with the original Myst, because despite its powerful effect on the industry (complete with parody games), it had many things I loathe:
1. Overdemanding Windows PC requirements. (10MB swap file?!?)
2. Hotspot hunt-and-click with a lack of actual gameplay. (Oh look, a valve.)
3. Slideshow navigation. (GO EAST. GO EAST DAMMIT! Get ye flask.)
4. Live video cutscenes. (Seriously Atrus, spank your kids and STFU.)
5. MOTSS - More Of The Same Sequels

With the one saving grace of using books as the main theme, which is why I played the Myst series at all, and totally skipped Return to Zork.

Brackynews

Every Tony Hawk after Tony Hawk 4. They cock teased you by adding a new type of way to link tricks together. Bam Margera totally ruined what was a decent series, and made me realize that skateboarding is not about spray painting and shooting tomatoes out of a cannon, or fucking racking up points by manualing through an entire level, or mediocre controls that got worse every year.

Just about every super hero game maybe with the exception of Xmen Legends, how can you fuck up a genre as simple as a super hero game? From Batman, to Superman, Hulk, Spiderman, and dare I say, about all Xmen Games. I specifically recall an Xmen game on Sega Genesis that only allowed you to have Wolverines claws out for a couple of minutes until they retracted and you had to find a power up to use them again! Fuck despicable. Iron Man's gonna suck too.

All video games that are based off of movies that are hyped up and said to have budgets of tens of millions of dollars, Transformers and Spiderman 3 I'm looking at you. All Mario Party games, Sonic games post Sega bankruptcy.

And the big whammies

Nintendogs, Pokemon, and Army of Two.

Nintedogs is not a videogame, just a way for Nintendo to corner the market that they are currently going after, children.

Pokemon was soooooooo awesome when I was a kid. Then they started just releasing games based off the color of the month, and just abusing their power with sucky, ugly ass pokemon with crappy ass powers, and the more games that they released, they never even changed the formula of the fight, and those games have now spanned 7 count them SEVEN consoles. NOTHING improved over the first one. Anyone who says that I suck or that I'm crazy I just have two words for you, Pokemon Snap. I rest my case

Army of two...Sigh, the bad part is that people actually bought it.

jspeed04

@TheIrishNinja: Its okay man, I accepted long ago that I am in the RPG minority. I am actually going to play through FFVI again when I am done with Lost Odyssey, just to really make sure I am not missing anything.

And I'm just not sure about Trigger. I played it before Cross came out, and I thought it was pretty good. But Cross is just so beautiful even today, with such an amazing soundtrack. I also love the characters, though some I could do without (the rockstar guy) and felt like the story was ridiculously compelling, especially when they whip out the deep info on Lavos right before the last boss fight.

I really don't know why we all feel the need to defend games; I know it isn't going to change any minds or anything, I guess I just feel like I owe at least this much to some of these games.

Captain Internet

Originally, I was gonna say Shadow Hearts: From the New World, so that it could be unmade and leave open the space for a good third SH game.

But in reading the comments here, I know that my answer is undoubtedly Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts represents the success of style over substance to the extreme, not only design-wise, but in the genericness of its plot that causes me to weep softly in the night (let's listen for the words "light," "darkness," and/or "heart" every other sentence during plot points!). KH and Advent Children gave me a clear impression of Tetsuya Nomura's design policy: he makes flat character personalities, and in the case of pre-existing characters, flattens them. It's like a monitor displaying 256 colors that gets shunted down to 16 colors. The KH2 seemed like it'd be more of the same, so I didn't bother buying it.

The success of the first, though, opened the door for incredibly vapid game stories to lay claim to massive popularity via stylish looks, high production values, and blatant fan-pandering, and if I could un-make KH, and in doing so send the associated creators down better paths, I would do it a hundred times over.

tenken

@endercatbus: Just to play devil's advocate, coming from someone who has played all the Final Fantasy titles with the exception to 1-3, I think 7,8,10, and 12 are better in every way than 4,5,6, and 9. And I have played a LOT of RPGs. I'm talking a lot. Well, I take that back; 6 had great characters (terrible antagonist though) and 4 had a great turning point for the main character.
I'd only hate it primarily for wiping out ITG because it was DDR that worked with a completely different skill level and introduced new elements to the DDR community. And because ITG was community driven the quality of music + skill levels were aimed at the people who played DDR.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi (1, 2 and 3 the gameplay sucks, thank God the new one will feature the ol' budokai engine Tenkaichi sucked big time)

Inuyasha: Feudal Combat and Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask, both an insult to a great anime, specially the last one.

The special edition (defangued) of Devil May Cry 3, the original was better and much more harder

Aquatopia, not a game by the way, but the worse 2 bucks ever spent

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (after 30 minutes it was ready for the trash can, hated the rpg element they added)

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (need to say more?)

Kane and Lynch (the concept was good, but terribly translated in to code)

Sonic the Hedgehog the "remake". Never played it, except the demo, but from what I've heard about it's storyline, it's simply unplayable gameplay wise and unplayable from the standpoint of a hardcore sonic fan, who bought every game, then stopped when he decided to never bother with Sonic Riders, a racing game where fast running characters have to ride hoverboards in a future world of some sort.

Shadow the Hedgehog comes in a very close second.

Third goes to an expansion pack, Ultima Online: Renaissance. Contrary to it's name, it KILLED a classic, rather than revived it. Not that it had died before then, UO just ended up being the first game of many MMORPGs to expire their welcome after about 2 years...

Codexx

I absolutely loved the first Kingdom Hearts. As a game, Kingdom Hearts 2 surpassed it. As an experience, it was...pretty bad. It utterly raped my favorite Disney movies in the eyesocket. Not to mention the lack of exploration (and this is coming from someone who loves linear games) in areas.

If KH got a 9 from me, KHII would get an 8. So I guess you could say I wouldn't so much Unmake it, as remake it.

physical

Halo actually! Of course! Duh, I feel silly for not immediately thinking of it. Not a bad game, but not a good game either and CERTAINLY not a great game. It played on the ignorance of console owners who had never previously been exposed to FPS and consequently gained an undeserved reputation as some sort of messianic product. The only moderately cool thing about it was the vehicles and co-op, but it remains lacklustre regardless. A triumph for marketing, a defeat for common sense.

ErskinPig

If this question could be unmade I'd settle for that.

As time goes on gamers increasingly feel as though their input and their taste should be involved with the creative process of making a video game, making it less a product of the minds of developers and more a service they coldly provide to our every whim. Now, certainly there are alot of games that I don't like, and I don't buy them of course, but personally I think saying as though a game should never have been made is disrespectful to the developers and undermines their creativity. We shouldn't be telling them what a good game is, they should be telling us, with something we've never seen before.

StarStabbedMoon

Final Fantasy XII and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and perhaps Wind Waker.

Those were TERRIBLE games. They didn't have even a shred or modicum of the 'magic' - if you'll permit me to use such an platitudinous and saccharine phrase - that their forerunners had had. They were terrible disappointments.

If you care to hear the reasons why I think so:

FFXII had a highly compressed and attenuated story. There was just so little there; almost no character development. The environments were so bland that I was almost certain at times that they had been completely computer generated. The "political elements" that so many say the game had were scattered about, it seemed, to pet egos and make people feel satisfied with themselves - to make them feel adult and mature. Political intrigue and the like do not a good game make (not necessarily). And the fact of having participation or interest in or understanding of politics, despite what you may think, does not mean that you are mature, intelligent, adult, or any of those things; just look at politicians.

LOZ:TP was likewise stripped down to a bare-bones forumla only vaguely reminiscent of that of preceding games which was instituted, I can only guess, to pander to the vulgar and unsophisticated interests of the great unwashed, or more precisely to their incompetence and desire for an easy game. So many classic staples of the series were ablated. The overworld, while expansive, was utterly tedious and uniteresting: there was nothing to do, really. Everything just came off as half-assed, boring, bland, non-descript, etc...

shikaningen

Anything Tomb Raider made past 1998. Attention license holder, WE NEITHER CARE OR TRUST YOU ANYMORE!

Manhunt, for the exact same reasons as GTA III, excepte replace "mediocre" with "terrible".

Finally, Star Wars V for the gameboy, as I think everyone wants to take revenge on one game that gave them trouble as a child.

dragonsword

I'd definitely unmake The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. Then I'd remake it. A non-existent story line (after The Wind Waker's wonderful one) bland dungeon design, that terrible Temple of the Ocean King. Ugh. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

Smash_Bro

@NeoAkira: Actually I played Kingdom Hearts. for two hours and was forced to watch it for three more, and felt the exact opposite. Everything about Kingdom Hearts was purely derivative, the combat was brainless button mashing, and the story was given in 10 minute chunks, in between which you had to sit through 2-3 hours of "help character A defeat villain." And I have nothing against Disney, Lion King was fucking awesome, but I really would have preferred to keep the decent characters you get in the different worlds, instead of having to use an unlikeable Goofy/Donald combo.

Blind_Evil

It's like James Kane said when a reporter asked how he felt about the fact movie adaptations had ruined his books, he responded: "No they haven't young man. They're on that shelf right there and they're all just fine."

I read the first 50 or so, and so far I gotta say that I'm glad every single one of the games mentioned was made. Every last one was good for the industry or the genre in some way. It showed how something good could be blundered and that leads to it being done properly the next time. In fact, a lot of them are games I particularly liked. Like ShenMue, I think that was a good game and in many ways it was good for gaming. I also liked Deathrap Dungeon: it was fun.

To the one who mentioned all the games that Uwe Boll has made films of, that was funny and I laughed out loud, but I see no problem with their existence either. It's fine and his films have a right to exist (and be laughed & pointed at!).

I stopped reading at that point, so I'm not sure what was mentioned thereafter.

I can't really honestly mention a single game that I would unmake, because no game that has ever been made has ever reduced my livelihood by sucking. If I've played a sucky game (and I have) I usually got a good laugh out of it, or I just hated it and let it go away so I could play something I do enjoy, but it hasn't effected me emotionally in any way and it certainly hasn't prevented good games from being made.

baked ham

From the big names:

KOTR 2 - anyone who has played both will agree

Final Fantasy 7 & 8 - could have spun off into a new series

WoW - as others have said, this game has completely stalled any innovation in the MMO arena

Sonic Adventure 2 - regarded as the series' death note

From the smaller names:

Blue Dragon - disappointment
Chrono Cross - not a Chrono game

To me in order for a game to be unmade, it had to have blemished either a great series or failed to live up to promises made by (big-shot)developers. Otherwise, there's always room for another game in the market.

RPGr
