@niall077: That's what I was thinking. But 20GB laptop hard drives are obsolete so I better strategy for Microsoft would be to phase out the Arcade SKU and the 20GB seperate add-ons (with a price drop of course) and leave the 60GB and 120GB SKUs in the market.

While the over-priced 120 gig drive is a major problem that Microsoft needs to fix (NOW!!!), I find the fluctuationg specs of the PS3 more of an annoyance. I believe that Microsoft is doing the right thing in gradually changing specs and not going back. With PS3, the hard-drive options went from 20 and 60 to just 60 to 40 and 60 to 40 to 40 and 80 and to just 40, and they're going to be re-releasing the 80's with MGS4. (I might have left a step out somewhere in there.) Hopefully, they'll keep the 80's on the market and stop this fluctuation nonsense. Now, the hard-drives aren't a big deal to everyone (myself included), but many consumers don't know jack about picking the proper hard-drive for their PS3. They bought it to play games and/or Blu-ray, after all. The real issue is the fluctuations in the other offerings. If you go back and check the specs of some of the lower-priced PS3s, you'll see what I mean. This post is already too long, so, I'll leave you with this: A standard hard-drive size increase and an adjustment of their pricing model would be smart business for Microsoft. It would be nice for them to enable use of external USB hard-drives or create an adaptable hard-drive case, that consumers can install their own hard-drive into to match the aesthetics of XBOX 360.

@Acute Gamer: That's exactly why I didn't get it. A friend of mine "borrowed" my Ninja Gaiden a couple weeks after I got it and never gave it back. I would have picked it up on Live but for the damn 20 gig hard drive.

Somehow I get the impression that MS is aware of this problem. Hasn't stopped them from gang raping people on the upgraded drive.

The price of the 120 is rape. Money's not the issue to me. It's the principal. (sounds like I'm full of crap doesn't it?) Seriously though.

As I understand it, while new hard drives grow less expensive to manufacture up until a point, old hard drives don't continue this trend. After some time, the demand for smaller hard drives decreases, more manufacturing facilities are tooled for the creation of larger hard drives, and it becomes more less efficient (read: more expensive) to keep a manufacturing facility open to produce the old, small HDs than it would be to tool it towards the creation of the newer, larger ones, more in-demand HDs.

In other words, Microsoft may be shifting from 20 GB HDs to 60 GB HDs because it's now or will soon be more expensive, in the big picture, to produce the former than the latter.

Really, who buys a 20 GB hard drive for their PC anymore? How many facilities do you supppose exist to create the things?

If I'm right, then I wouldn't expect the Arcade to get the 20 GB HD any time soon.

I'll give it a year or two before I buy a new model (As I'll be going to college anyway and my younger brother won't let me take it. Bastard.). @Losbullitt: My PS3 is already 250GB. And it cost only $114 to do it. Oh, and all of my content from the old HD copied over without a problem and without a specialized transfer cable.

Yet, somehow, Microsoft continues to make HD transfer as expensive and difficult as possible.

The sad thing is that all of my Rock Band DLC is on my 360, so I'm sort of locked in to that platform.

Make something that works just right the first time, preferably with full backwards compatibility, and allow us to connect our 260 GB external hard drive we bought for $80 through the USB.

I've got the 120gb

With all the videos I've downloaded and a ton of game content (I'm so fucking obsessed with this. If a game has free content I will instantly download it incase it's limited and I play the game sometime in the future) I still have about 60-70gbs left.

What I really hope happens is that this new model becomes mid-tier, the arcade is brought out of production and the premium becomes the cheap model. Maybe they can finally utilize that hard drive for something useful.

They include drunk Michael Jackson Karaoke, long nights of Texas Hold'em, fruity girly drinks, playing Halo 3 with 12 year olds whilst dropping the Fa**** and F*** bombs at them, and ending the night with a good streak down main street in sub 30 degree temps.

I do have a friend in Chicago that RRODed his Elite (no surprise) and decided to take it upon himself to fix the sytem. He says it works. Even had pictures. But he drives a Chevrolet. I wouldn't put too much stock into what he says.

@Collapse The Control: Correctamundo. I use Netflix for movies and have a PS3 for things I want to see in High Def format. Have had my 360 since launch and have only filled it half way. That includes about 35 XBL Arcade games and DLC. Think I will be just fine with the ol' 20GB.

I'm surprised I would figure that M$ would simply release a 60 gig drive for some stupidly ridiculous price and just use the HDD to further rape the consumers who were dumb enough not to get a unit with a HDD. They could even put it at 139.99, right in the middle of the 20 and 120 models. That way the consumer can go "oh I get twice as much for only 40 bucks more!" and they can spur sales of the 120's. They wouldn't even need to make the 60's then just have the illusion of them existing :p

If M$ actually wanted to do something good for the gamers, they could put the 60 gigs in the plat units and then start including 20 gigs with all the units that dont have a hard drive at all but keep their pricing the same. Would also help with developers becasue they know everyone will have a hdd.

There's this big, confusing comparison article on VGChartz between the PS2-gen sales and the current gen. Looks like this one is going slightly slower, but that doesn't surprise me because of PRICE! $199 needs to be circled on a board and discussions made on how to get there soon.

had microsoft simply opted for an internal hard drive like with the last xbox, developers could be guaranteed a hard drive which would allow for massive game save files if necessary, among other things...

not to mention, i guarantee a fat, ugly, internal hdd is much cheaper than microsofts tiny proprietary drive.

a big mistake in my opinion... they could have saved alot of money building it right in, and easily given consumers much more space for their DLC content.

why invest so much in digital download functionality, and then not pack wireless internet and a hard disk standard?

@Losbullitt: Ok, so the fact that I have it in an open area, on the other side of the Room from the heating vent, in the draftiest room in my house I've already met your criteria. I realize I said it was "on top" of other components, what I meant was the top shelf, so the top back and sides of the unit are completely open for 3 or 4 feet in every direction. In fact the Wii and the AppleTV are in much worse thermal areas of the same room, crammed underneath. The AppleTV is on continuously and has no Fan, is hot to the touch, and even though I've hacked a new HD into it and generally been in and out of the case at least a dozen times its never had one single error.

So yeah, the Xbox360 is a piece of fucking shit that no amount of "You should Ventilate it!" will redeem, hardware-wise. It has great games, which is the only reason I sent it back to MS for repair instead of taking it out back and shooting it, which might have been the more merciful solution.

Well Dai, thanks for asking. Ventilation in this sense, means that you want to have some sort of air flow going into it. Of course, air is all around but in this case, you want to have that air being channeled into the system, pushing the hot hair out and having cooler air flow over the various heat sinks and other internal parts.

Now how do you go about such things?

A fan would help. If your house sucks, which mine does, leave the heater vent closed so your room will drop a good 20 degrees and that, my friend, will keep your system cool. Or leave it in an open area to play your games instead of sticking it in some small, confined area. Your xbox 360 is not a PS3. It should not be treated as such. So you have to be more delicate with it.

I would however recommend you staying away from the cod plus system as the smell is ungodly.

Seriously, I leave my system in the open. My PS3 sits atop it, but there is a good eight inches from where they sit to the wall. And it's cold in my room.

I find it increasingly alarming that people are still trading in or upgrading to newer SKU's or bigger HDD's for the 360 when they're made/announced. You'd think it would've have hit mainstream already that you lose every penny you ever put into your first bought SKU if you upgrade or trade in at stores.

Ha, now that i think of it, the only real way to upgrade your 360 pr HDD is to break it(or wait for it to inevitably break itself), send it in to MS, and have them upgrade your system while they have it.

But hell, even that doesn't work the way it's supposed to..

And I hate all these things I keep saying about the system and MS, because it makes me sound like a fanboy to the others when I'm not..

@usfslacker: The only games I have ever had save problems/excessive lockup on are bigger RPG's - Mass Effect, Oblivion and Enchanted Arms. Mass Effect had wack save sytem and I had to replay a lot. Oblivion's was wack, but you could save whenever so as long as you remembered you were ok.

I'm just not sure why some of these games don't autosave more consistently. It's annoying.

@Losbullitt: Really...I just sent off my 3rd 20GB Xbox, it didn't even RROD it just died and wouldn't turn back on this time. It sits on the top of my little roll cart next to the TV that also holds my Wii, Bose, Switcher and AppleTV, but it sits on top of those things and has a little intercooler on the back. It also has a heavy duty extension cord taking it its power from an Outlet IN THE OTHER ROOM, so that it will not be sharing it with any other devices.

So honestly, what THE FUCK else should I be doing to safeguard it, short of simply not turning it on? I honestly want to know, you tell us to "ventilate" our systems and give no details, what does that entail that I'm not already doing? Were you using "Ventilate" in the 1930s vernacular sense, should I fire into my Xbox360 with a Tommy Sub Machine Gun?

Hmm I doubt it considering that you cannot buy movies on XBL. You rent them. There's no reason to have a bigger HDD when the file deletes itself 24 hours after viewing it.

I remember when zip disks were considered HUGE for memory storage. Who'd thought I'd live to see the day when a 20 GB hard drive is considered meager.

I have the 20 gig model and haven't really had an issue. I haven't bought movies or tv shows though, i'm guessing those are like a gig each or something?

The last three years, I've owned 5 boxes. When I owned those 5 units, I never had a problem with them... well, freezing on my third one. However, I do concede that the first one, which my ex owns, RRoDed in late 06, early 07. I am also aware that the build quality is worse than an 80s Chevrolet.

I've logged in tons of hours on my 360 and it doesn't give me any grief.

I will complain about the 120gb replacement drive. It is $180 currently. I can get bigger versions for under $80 for a PC. Now I understand Microsoft has their branding/device attachment etc to factor in. Microsoft learned from their XBox days that it is better to charge for crazy prices for accessories than to include them with a system if you want them later.

Viva la 20gb HD! I will delete stuff before I drop $180 down on a 120gb HD.

There's no reason the consoles shouldn't upgrade SKU's as technology changes, errors are found, improvements can be made, and production costs change.

It's not new and improved SKU's that are the problem, it's SKU's that no one wants, like the Arcade/Core.

I sure hope they drop the price of the add-on hard drives along the way. My 360 is fine, but the larger hard drives are overly expensive to buy separately.

Yes, I'm bitter because Lost Odyssey is really showing me how bad the build quality on the machines are.

I can't do it anymore. Next gen, Sony and MS should just launch their consoles with a 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, etc all the way up to like a terabyte that way we don't to juggle the damned things anymore. Also, none of them should have the same features. 3 of them at random have BC, 4 at random have HD movie playback, only 2 of them come with wireless controllers, 6 at random have motion sensing technology at some point, etc. (with things like built in wireless and ethernet ports and HDMI) with only the terabyte model, sitting at a comfortable $2,000, having all of them.

I'm curious if Microsoft will drop the arcade version? A 40 Euro price drop would be approximately 60 dollars US. That if enacted here, would put the 20 GB Xbox 360 in the price range of the Arcade.

I mean unless they drop the price of the hard drives they sell I doubt many people will go buy larger hard drives and the fact that the Premium will come with an larger HD won't mean much, if the price cut isn't significant.

It never made sense to me that they ever sold a console 1. without a HD, and 2. with only 20GB on the other model at launch.

There idea the whole time was for the 360 to become part of a "home entertainment experience"... with high-def downloads, on demand rentals, and integration with Windows 20 GB was never enough.

Although I do find the RROD to be not-so-entertaining in my own home theater experiences... hopefully my third replacement is a charm.

I'm currently using the 120GB HDD.

Right now I got 70GB of videos stored on it with the Game section just 1GB (all DLC deleted from older games).

Anything larger than a 20GB isn't needed if you don't d/l videos or play every game with every piece of content.
