This is about the gaming community coming together to help one of their own. It is not about corporate sponsorship and Bungie saying "Look at us we are saving lives". The uncomfortable thing about these situations is always the question of what happens to the people who can't afford it, who don't have the friends to set up the tournament, and so on and so forth.

Bungie *could* put together a halo related fundraiser where they promise to match up to a certain amoutn or something, and create a charity to help fund organ transplants. Or stemcell research so that we can just grow the things and not worry about having to find it off someone else.

Plus, frankly, it's a little grim to associate something fun with unvarnished reality. There was a moderator presence in the donate-games-to-the-troops post, because the idea was 'hey, life sucks, but lets forget that right now', whereas this is the opposite. I don't have an opinion, necessarily, on whether that's ok or not, but it's a gear change.

In this case, Halo is simply the tool. If Bungie shelled out the big bucks every time a hardcore Halo fan needed a new body part, they would be out of business.
