With pinch, drag, twist, tap twirl and accelerometer support wrapped around a gorgeous screen, Wi-Fi networking and a camera, the iPhone could become the mobile platform of choice for experimental, physics-based, and social gaming. The incredible e-commerce distribution support (through the iTunes store) and democratized SDK punctuate that reality. It's no less than if Nintendo opened up the DS to anyone for development *and* distribution. That's huge. And not only that, but Apple will actually absorb the cost of supporting devs who want to give their software away for free.

All of which exemplifies the fact that we really can't think of the iPhone as just another "cell phone" platform. Java and Flash games these are not. Go watch the YouTube video of Sega demoing a 3D, tilt-sensitive Monkey Ball on the iPhone. The lead developer himself literally says "This is no cellphone game." He also notes the pleasant problem of having to fly in an artist to upscale the graphics for the iPhone. And with 16 or 32GB of storage space, there might be a lot of games looking up their textures!

If this thing gains any momentum it'll take over the world.

My only question is (1) Yes its got "hardware accelerated Open GL 3D graphics" but what's the true horsepower of the iPhone to push pixels, shading, textures, etc? (2) When pushing all those fine graphics, what's the battery life?

Obiter

Until it's made 100% clear what the scope of iPhone Spore is, there's not much to get excited over. After all, if iSpore is just the cell stage -- i.e. the regular mobile version with snazzier graphics -- then it doesn't prove much about the iPhone's/iPod Touch's capabilities. If, however, it's the full cell-creature-tribal-civ-space (with editors) version of Spore, then it would be something to get excited over.

That would mean the iPhone/Touch had the best parts of the DS (touch) and the PSP (multimedia and wireless web) rolled into one, which would be great. Otherwise, it would just cement the iPhone as being, well, a phone... a sexy phone, granted, but still a phone.

ArmiMaan

IF ANYONE FEELS THE SAME. Please, say now, or hold your peace.

Apple, have never done anything to do with games really. Where microsoft came in with their illustrious background of PC gaming with the XBOX, apple havent. Its our comfort, 3 consoles, 3 very level consoles, and thats the way its always been. we're neo old fashioned if you like. But apple will easily get games and an apple gamer fanbase will build, and probably, its a very good gaming device. But it steps on the toes of the ds. On the functionality of the XBOX, succeeds without trying where NGAGE and gizmondo fails, and it may well be down to it being a better device, but as a totally old fashioned and totally biased gamer. I have a big feeling its done it off the apple brand.

HarmanSmith

@theTOMSTA666: Because cellphone games generally suck and aren't worth the money you actually pay from them. I'd otherwise generally agree with you. 5 years ago or slightly more, during work break, i'd sometimes crack out my Nokia 3310 or what ever it was. Snake was a great way to kill time, it was simple and fun. A few years ago, i downloaded Sonic on my newer cell phone, again it must have been Sonic 2 or something, so its rather simple, theres even flash remakes on the internet so it wasn't a "demanding" game. It played awful and was terribly slow and from what i've seen a lot of cellphone games are like that. Extremely low quality money makers.

Of course, i'm not going to compare cellphone games to iPhone games. Since all the iPhone games i've seen so far, such as Spore, look like they have the potential to be actually good. Its just silly that the iPhone is only available on one service provider and has an 18 month contract. Still, they are games for people that actually own one.

Walker
