PSP games are like PS2 graphics, Wi-fi, you can watch movies, view pictures, listen to music, remote play with PS3, skype, GPS, Camera... I think you got the point. DS has wi fi and like a million games, but out of that many games how many really worth?
The same thing goes for Wii, the last time I played on my Wii was november 07 for 3 days when Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles was out, by the way, what a shi** game.

They got about 13M sales to make in order to catch up to the DS in japan, not counting any further sales the DS makes. And the gap is even further in other territories. There's NO WAY the sales can reach that before the next portables are released, so why all the PSP/DS hate? Just enjoy the good news and be done with it.

I'm more interested in what Sony/Nintendo come out with next. Knowing Nintendo's history, they already got the next portable ready, and they are just waiting until sales stall before saying anything about it. Either then or when Sony spills the beans on the PSP2 or PSP phone, which could be as early as this coming E3. Here's hoping.

@autob0n: I've been following the sales charts for over a year on here. Slim is a factor yes, price drop and multi-features are also a factor, but the biggest is the multipacks with new color and Monster Hunter. There's always a upsurge in sales on a system when a major game (To the Japanese) is announced up till the day it's out and then for a while afterwards. Depending on what happens, you'll see Wii sales level off in the next month or so. It's not uncommon.

Not so much that it finally happened, but moreso that Nintendo seems to be doing nothing to stop it. Handheld has nothing to do with anything. Brain Age single handedly spiked DS's sales in Japan even after a year it came out (Stayed in top 10 EVERY WEEK and most ranking 1st and 2nd). Old people, Moms, Businessmen that would never have bought a DS otherwise bought DS's to get their brain's younger. And even after part 2 came out Brain Age 1 was still on the top 10 charts for a while until they both slowly died down.

Hey I agree with you about everything else you said that also boosted PSP sales; but something that seems stupid or impossible in your logic/culture doesn't mean that it's stupid/impossible everywhere else.
I'm not countering an opinion w/ another opinion btw, the above are facts that you can check out yourself.

So just about 15% of the population of Japan owns a DS. Of course, some allowances must be made for people that buy multiple DSes for collectors purposes or whatnot. But even still, that's an insane amount of market penetration. PSP having a recent surge ain't got nothing on that, especially considering the fact that the DS is still selling so well.

They've dropped steadily. That shows that the discontinued model has been in decline and will eventually be totally gone.

If you get rid of 2/3rd of your SKU's, especially good PS3 models (w/ PS2 BC) then obviously the numbers will be much lower. Combine that with little exciting releases and there you have it. Yakuza 3 should bring it up a bit.

The PSP vs DS sales are an insight into what will happen in the future with the Wii and PS3. Wii will sell and sell and build a sizeable lead. So why the surprise to see a Sony platform do well? They DO have some excellent games in the pipe for both platforms.

The success of a console/handheld should be judged based on the quality of its titles, not its sales.

A new Monster Hunter is coming out, along with I believe new colored PSP's That's behind the sales spike. No, the PSP has no chance in hell of catching up to the DS or the Wii, but it keeps a nice sizeable chunk of marketshare all to itself. No, the DS has not reached saturation levels, it's nowhere close to it. No, a week or two or ten of PSP at #1 will have any noticeable effect on the gap between it and the PSP, as the DS has kept 30-50k weekly sales for months on end. When the new Dragons Quest is released for it, you'll see sales spike to 100k plus.

Everything else seems about normal save for the Wii numbers being about 5-10k bigger due to Wii Fit and Brawl still moving systems.
