The reason it was always a thing between the Beatles and Elvis is that Elvis fans like to claim that he's the best-selling musical act of all time because so many Beatles fans used to only be able to afford 45's instead of LPs. Beatles fans, of course, deny this preposterous crap on the basis that Elvis sales have been artificially inflated by fact that a massive chunk of the Elvis catalog was released by his estate after his not-soon-enough death. To be fair, though, he did have a lot of great songs...as long as they were being sung by pretty much anyone but him.

Now, to the question at hand, the Stones are the poster child for blues rock these days, so they do have a lot going for them in that regard, but they're counted as the second most influential band behind the Beatles, they're not even second to the Beatles in terms of overall album sales, and they lose out on the fact that the Beatles pretty much single-handedly inspired entire genres of music (including psychadelic rock and heavy metal) in the six short years it took for them to release the latter 2/3rds of their catalog. Yeah, they had some stinkers (Revolution #9 isn't even a _song_, for crying out loud), but they're still the Star Wars of the music industry.

The Beatles...no doubt about it. All you have to do is look at the contributions they have made to music. The Stones are great, but it took me years to get into them.

First song I learned on piano? Let it Be.
First song I learned on guitar? Blackbird.
First song I sang? OK, I don't remember that. But you get the idea.

The Beatles were constantly reinventing themselves and their sound. A history of the Beatles really IS a history of rock & pop.

I fall into the category with people who don't even think that the Stones belong in the same discussion as the Beatles. Nothing against the Stones, but without their longevity, they are just another good band. It just goes to show what you can get by sticking around for a few decades too long. Beatles vs Stones isn't even interesting because the only reason you could pick the Stones is if you hate the Beatles. I find Who vs Zep or Nirvana vs Pearl Jam to be much more compelling discussions.

Sorry Stones fans, but the Beatles all the way. They practically invented modern rock in a relatively short period of time. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, The White Album, and Abbey Road. They all still sound fresh and innovative forty years later (which doesn't say a whole lot about today's music) The Stones wrote some awesome songs as well, but really, they just play the blues. Plus, can you really forgive them for Undercover of the Night?

While the Stones are a great band and Mick is an excellent front man, the Beatles are easily tops due to their impact on music in general.

Music researchers will be constantly re-evaluating and re-interpreting the Beatles for hundreds of years. The sheer variety and experimentation in a band that was THE pop sensation of the day is something that is truly rare.

I remember VH1 had one of their stupid list shows as "The Top 10 Bands of All Time (except the Beatles)" because with the Beatles included, there would be no real disagreement on who is #1.

Twist and Shout is a cover of the Isley Brothers song written by Phil Medley and Burt Russell and The Beatles version came out after the Twist fad had already died off. It's still an ok song, but I can't imagine a song that was dated when it was released being regarded as timeless.

Stones, easy - both bands Beatles have 5 near-perfect records, but the early Stones records actually still sound great, whereas the early Beatles stuff - the first 5 major albums, really - sounds pretty cheesy and aged poorly. Also, the whole 'no Beatles means no Stones' thing is silly - their first singles were only 6 months apart.

From the two, it would be the Beatles by a thin margin. Both cracking acts, both still lingering around (well, Macca is anyway).

Twist and Shout is just about a perfect and timeless song, that's what edges it over for me.

Of course the only sane answer to this, and the Beatles-man, Elvis-man dichotomy is - the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds was a million years ahead of its time. ;)

I have to agree with Mr. Buckley on the Beatles. The Stones have had some good songs but by and large both of them are incredibly overrated.

Personally, give me good old Elvis Presley any day. In some ways I feel the best year for American pop music was 1963, just before the Beatles came along.

The Beatles, hands down. Name almost any rock stereotype and they did it first. Name many of the technical advances in rock music and they did it first. Plus the range of their musical catalog genre-wise is breath-taking whereas the Stones stayed more Blues-rooted (though that's not necessarily a bad thing) except for their Disco fling (/shudder).

Though, really, to quote the Geico commercial:

I've always held the opinion, which isn't always terribly popular, that the Rolling Stones are kind of shit. To be more specific, they're like fossilized dinosaur shit. It's only after millions of years are they placed on a pedastal in a museum and viewed with awe. They've been poo the entire time, but they were rewarded for being persistent.

I think Rob Thomas is trying to hold out for the same treatment.

I like and respect the stones, but the Beatles reinvented pop and rock. You don't have to like them, but you'd be a fool to claim that they aren't the most influential band of all time.
