The devs were rumored to have had problems getting Riddick and Halo 2 to run properly on older Xbox models because their test units (with the newer DVD drives from a different manufacturer) were newer than some peoples XBOXes. They didn't know until the game shipped and Microsoft never came out and admitted the hardware problem publicly because that would lead to a possible recall, so they just tried to charge people the $130 to have their XBOXes fixed quietly through customer service. This type of problem is one of the reasons that Microsoft won't tell us what components they use or what changes they make to the unit, and they make it difficult to open the case so we can't easily check them out.

However, given the overwhelming number of people reporting problems, it is safe to claim that there is a problem with the game.

To use a relevant example, 16% of 360s suffer from hardware failure. While many people report no problems at all, 16% is still considered obscenely high for failure. I hope you aren't waiting for a majority of users to report a problem to agree that there is one. It likely will not happen.

What frustrates me about this is that it has become just as dangerous to be a software early adopter as it is to be a hardware early adopter.

This is a great solution if you have a 4:3 SDTV... um. Maybe. For those of us with HDTV's, though, that option is grayed out... not that I understand how exactly changing the aspect ratio will fix freezing and framerate problems.

I went a step further and asked them how I could get my money back since their product was broken and retailers won't take back opened software. The answer was unsatisfactory. Essentially, Rockstar won't get involved. It isn't their problem... or so they say.

I'd be glad to get anyone a copy of the whole support transcript if interested.

This support tech didn't exactly seem "horrified." At no point did the support tech apologize for the problems. In fact, at first, she seemed completely unaware that her company had issued a statement.

Until Rockstar acts "horrified," I'm not going to believe that they actually are.

Older hardware doesn't mean pre-heat issue fixes, it could mean something as simple as the DVD drive in the machine. If you look at multiple Xbox 360 machines, you will notice they will likely all have different DVD trays. I have had 4 at home (An Elite and an Arcade at the moment, one Elite that went back for repair, and one Premium I sold when I bought my first Elite). Each of the 4 machines have had a completely different tray... and notably, the Elite I got back from MS (after my first one red ringed) has a much worse drive than my original... it seems to run into problems on a near daily basis... I've started a countdown until it dies...

anyway, just something to keep in mind.

This doesn't make sense. Dev kits *are* old X360s. A lot of them date back to before production models even. Test kits are pretty much identical to Rev 1 hardware. In fact, they are engineered to be. It's not like their Xenon kits are all brand-new falcon boards.

Yeah. Still, my point resonates. And this isn't really the hardware's fault. It's something else's fault. The capability of the machine is identical, so it's not like it's the fault of the architecture for making the game unplayable. It must be heat generation that's causing glitching. Either that, or Rockstar is full of shit. Because why would a port of a PS2 game cause so much heat that systems glitch up? The whole thing has me so confused & umcomfortable I don't know what to do! I was actually interested in playing Bully for the first time, but I guess I'll have to pass on it for now.
