@Ajh: I completely agree with you, I had actually met and played a few games (of D&D with Gary, and will be the first to say that he was a great guy and will be truely missed.

Some of the other comments just bothered me, due to the way they were addressing the game as his, but I digress, Gary will be missed and I even intend to send a card to his family offering my condolences. On another note though the saveing throw comments, while cute at first , are almost becomeing disrespectful... but then again thats just my opition, which really doesn't matter.

I've found it very difficult to come to grips with this news when I heard it today. I heard many quips about failed saving throws, and then some of the comments here, couldn't convert to 4th ed. and the like. The best one here, is the universe rolling a 1. Today the entire gaming community is a bit sadder, and one of the greatest pioneers has been lost. I'd dare say he's probably the third or fourth most influential figure on gaming today, behind Baer, Nolan, and possibly Miyamoto.

I have honestly been a bit choked up about this. I find it hard to express how a man I'd never met influenced my life and the person I'd become in so many, many ways. My love of games, dragons, and fantasy all stem from this man. My hobbies were his visions.

I think probably the greatest way to reflect upon the death of Mr. Gygax is to look at that vision of games. His vision was not that players got around to be competitve, everyone trying to "win" the game. His vision was the game was made a richer experience by all the players cooperating, by working together, by telling stories and carving their own paths, by making games whatever they wanted them to be.

R.I.P. Gary. I'll never ever forget you.

He is as much the father of paper and pencil gaming as Shigeru Miyamoto (along with the good people at Nintendo) is the father of modern electronic gaming--more so, even. He leaves quite the legacy, and he will not be forgotten. Hopefully, his game will not outlive his memory, as he is certainly a man who deserves to be remembered. This is true. Without Dave Arneson, we wouldn't have had D&D, or any of the innumerable things that sprang from it. But Dave Arneson working alone wouldn't have created D&D any more than E. Gary Gygax would have, so the statement "Without Gary Gygax, we wouldn't have had D&D, or any of the innumerable things that sprang from it" is accurate.

And it certainly seems true that Gygax treated Arneson badly, and ousted him from TSR at the very beginning, and worked for years to deny him the credit he deserves, though this is not the version of the story Gygax told. The same could be said of Bob Kane, who largely didn't acknowledge Bill Finger's contribution to the creation of Batman. That doesn't make Bob Kane's death any less tragic.

Unfortunately, because of the nature of the world, one day we'll lose Arneson, too, and when that day comes, I'll be saying that without him, we wouldn't have had D&D, or any of the innumerable things that sprang from etc., etc.. And until that day comes, and afterwards, I will continue to make the effort to credit D&D's creation to both Arneson and Gygax when I discuss these things.

But today Gygax is dead. He was a creative genius, if not in perpetuity then for a time, and whatever else may be true, without him D&D wouldn't exist, nor Ultima nor Final Fantasy, nor Warcraft, nor Diablo, nor, do I think, any current game would exist, for even games without obvious D&D influence were created by people who have played and have had their thoughts shaped by D&D-inspired games. I don't think there's a single video game today not influenced in some way by Dungeons & Dragons.

Fare well, E. Gary Gygax. Your impact on modern entertainment was great, and your legacy is tremendous. We are all richer for your contribution. I got my first job because I wanted to be able to afford roleplaying game books, and I got my second job because of events following meeting someone at a roleplaying game. I met my best friend online in a newsgroup devoted to a roleplaying game. I can think of no one outside my immediate family who has influenced the course of my life in more ways than you have.

My condolences to his loved ones. I would say "May he never be forgotten," but I don't need to, because he won't be.

When I was but a boy, not so many years ago, it was my one ernest wish to be a knight; that gallant swordsman who would rush in and save the day, in short a hero. I think at some level this was a dream we all shared, why we all waved sticks around like we were in some Errol Flynn movie, fighting off the castle guards and saving many maidens. Secretly that desire never really went away, we dress it up in different clothes but in the end it's still there.

Dungeons & Dragons, when I came upon it, by no means had the monopoly it once had, but the very name grabbed me and all those buried childhood memories came flooding. So the girls didn't like me? So there were strains of ebola that were more popular than me in the school yard? So what? For an afternoon none of it would matter, for an afternoon homework was less important than ancient dragons and glowing swords, and I'll always thank him for that.

So fare thee well Gary Gygax, wherever you've gone may you always roll 20's.

One of the most important figures in video game history, everyone should know his name (he was one Futurama for crying out loud!) and thank him for all the hours we spent trying to reach that one last level.

Due to the fact of how many of you are contributing Gary as such an important figure in gameing history, I just wanted to point out that although he was a great game creator and inventor, the basics for the origional D&D were not all his idea. (See: [en.wikipedia.org]). I suppose this only bothers me due to the fact that Dave Arneson is a former teacher of mine, (as well as being an all around cool guy). Anyway I'll end my rant now, just felt that it needed to be said again.

I don't think anyone could really fathom Gary's impact on gaming.

From Top Secret, Gamma World, Dungeons and Dragons, to Star Frontiers...I think I played almost everything done by TSR and they really paved the way to gaming as we know it today. I can't say I would be into gaming as much as I am today if it weren't for TSR and Gary Gygax.

Bummer. Were it not for D&D, I really wouldn't have gotten into video games as I've gotten today, and I'd bet that a lot of the major game designers we laud (like Will Wright, Peter Molineux (sp), John Carmack, etc.) used to play D&D as well.

There's a poem that "Knights of the Dinner Table" magazine runs on request when a member of a reader's gaming group passes away, and I suspect they'll be running this coming issue, and is appropriate right now, called The Empty Chair (Eulogy for a Gamer).

I'm a huge fan of the idea of Dungeons & Dragons, but I was sadly never able to convince any of my friends that it could be fun. I've never played the game, but I've owned sourcebooks and created characters before. Hmm... I have enjoyed many video games based on D & D, though. Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment. If I'm not mistaken, they were all related to D & D, though if I'm incorrect, I know that at least Baldur's Gate was.

Holy shit.
Excuse my language, but this man may have had more of an impact on the game industry than any other figure. If not for him we wouldn't have the same games we do today, and RPGs may not even exist. He even influenced the way many of us speak online.
My thoughts go out to his family and the millions of D&D players.

i rolled a 1 on saving vs being sad about this.

at least now i have an excuse to try to re-start the weekly gaming sessions. it's hard now that we're all lvl 30 Career Workers, but damn if i won't try...

Never played D&D seriously myself, but anybody who's ever played a game with HIT POINTS owes the man a debt of gratitude, and that was the smallest of his contributions to our passtime/hobby that is gaming.

This is such a shame. Without wanting to sound like too much of a geek, I play D&D most weekends with friends, I have for years. I'm sure he'll be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all in the gaming community.

I think what might be most unfortunate is that he won't be around for the new edition of the game, released in the summer. Sad news :-(

People probably do not realize just how big an impact he has had on all facets of gaming due to the creation of D&D. Think of all the current games that have even the slightest of RPG systems, like CoD4, etc. All this stuff has evolved from RPG stuff that was developed by him back in the early 70's.
