Look, the kid shouldn't have sent in a freakin' SIGNED xbox and expected to get it back 100% the same. Hell, we all read that kotaku post that had the interview with the xbox refurbashing employee, most people don't even get back the same CONSOLE they sent in. He was naive and silly to send such a collectors item without knowing the risks. He's just lucky Bungie is awesome enough to help him out with his mistake.

4sparta

@gregdoom:
You know, it doesn't really matter how good or bad it is. There is such a thing as sentimental value, and getting back a (mostly) clean white box erased that value. If I ever had to send in my laptop for repairs, I'd be all kinds of pissed if it came back without the giant purple "AMD Inside" Intel logo on the lid, especially now that the company that made it is no longer in business.

@Annex1:
I can't see them giving him Recon and just leaving it at that. It may be rare, but it's hardly unique. Now, throwing it in as a bonus is a definite possibility, but the main "gift" will certainly be a custom Halo 360 of some sort, likely with a bunch of developer signatures.

Purple Dave

The comments on this article REALLY give you an idea as to how the general internet gaming community thinks. There are those who praise Bungie for stepping up and doing the right thing. Then there are those that let the green monter "jealously" set it.

I am a collector, there are things I enjoy collecting. For example, when I was a kid, for a school project, I was asked to send a letter to my favourite company and see if they replied. (Most schools had this I believe.). At the time, I chose EGM magazine. It was the only gaming magazine I was reading back then (Gamepro had GHEY cover art). What I received back from EGM was a copy, 3 months in advance, of their 100 issue! The cover is signed by each of the five major book staff. It's a fantastic little item and I would be terribly upset if something were to happen.
Why is it in the electronics industry (mostly), that we live on this believe now that we don't need uniqueness. This guys 360 was one-of-a-kind. Yet, there are those that believe it shouldn't matter. Some of us celebrate individuality, things like this should live on.

I am quite excited to see what they do for this guy. I am going to go on the idea that he gets a 360 from Bungie, with the most phenomenal Halo artwork you have ever seen...or toss him Recon and a flaming helmet. :D

Annex1

In a perfect world, the 360 wouldn't have been cleaned. Everybody would be nice and accommodating, managers wouldn't look at statistics and it'd be 1950.

The rule in any corporation nowadays is CYA: Cover Your Ass.

You do nothing that gives them a legit reason to fire you - and that includes breaking SOP without written authorization.

This guy who wiped off the 360? If cleaning them off is SOP and he was unable to obtain written authorization to leave it as is, they can do nothing to him. He gets fired, he can sue them because he was effectively doing exactly what he was paid to do, and doing it correctly.

I went back through the links to the original articles and such, and one thing that I think might be possible is that the person who erased it was a serious M$oft or XBox fan. On the text-only side of the original 360, there were two signatures that blatantly insulted the 360 design (one says not to put to much ink on it or it'll overheat, and the other calls it a "three-shitsty"). If that ended up in the hands of an over-zealous fan, they could have scrubbed it clean out of spite. The other is that the purple smudges might not be evidence that it was scrubbed clean, but simply intended to look that way, to cover the theft of the original cover.

Purple Dave

Well i should probably wrap mine up here too...
I see where JDK is coming from even though i don't agree, but realistically this is the internet and never will everyone agree. It's just your outlook on life that decides this one.
>>> I <<<, that is to say me, don't believe it's a fooled people publicity stunt, no Corp. can provide caviar to every consumer, but Bungie itself has had an excellent record for consumer care, it's not the one incident that makes them great, it's their entire system and this incident is one that helps prove that, where microsoft has certainly not.(Did they not just recently dismiss the poor man who lost all his saves[and he didn't even send his console in for repairs]?)
>>> I <<<, that is to say me, believe it is shameful of a Corp. to pull a stunt to increase their positive feedback as well. This isn't the case with Bungie, they interact with their fans all the time, I could personally maybe forge a great map and have it on the Bungie home page, with a post from Frankie himself, and I have yet to see another Corp. do this.
The only thing I am going to call you on is that this quote "people never really said too much about Bungie caring about their customers until they gave away a console or whatever they are doing." i find to be untrue, but it also does depend where you spend your time on the internet as well.
And I never accused anybody who debated my viewpoints on being an idiot, dick or otherwise either. There are always multiple sides to a story... just try and remember that.
My final note is that I am happy to have participated in my first argument on Kotaku (Yay!) and that i sit here and find it to be a little funny that a bunch of individuals can argue in text for an hour over what we think, and it's not going to make a difference in the end at all... In fact, im rather sad I didn't just shrug it off at 11:30 and gone to bed, I might have passed that Physics test tomorrow =P

Psychotic173

@JDK: What Bungie did here was help a fan out who had his custom 360 taken away from him (I'm talking about the artwork, of course) and got attention by posting his story on the internet. You have to realize that Bungie IS NO longer part of Microsoft (they still work with them but are not own by them anymore) so there is no need for them to anything for this guy. In fact, I don't even think I have yet read Microsoft apologizing to the guy for "wiping" his 360 clean but we see here Bungie at least doing something. I understand your point about Bungie being a company and "using this kind gesture" and "spinning" it to give their company a good image but I do find faults in that point. For one thing Bungie is very well respected as a gaming company and always had a good image. If there was an "ulterior motive", please tell me what it is because all I see is a company helping a fan out.

dhunter

Also, to address an earlier question: when has Bungie done something for the gaming community? Ever heard of Red vs. Blue? Yeah, those guys are making money using Bungie's game for their rather popular machinima show, and aren't taking a cut of the profits. I'd say that shows a bit of love for their fans.

Besides, somehow I don't see Bungie execs sitting around the board room table, strumming their fingers and plotting with evil glee how they're going to capitalize on this situation to garner some positive press. Last time I checked, they were doing pretty damned well financially and with the sheer volume of players still playing the hell out of their game, it's pretty obvious that other than the VERY vocal anti-Halo minority, people are happy with Bungie.
Well, I sure as hell wouldn't expect him to hold on to a dead system just for sentimental value. Sounds like the kid did everything he could to protect his investment (repair the system) and the artwork he cared about. I don't see how that was a mistake that he needs to learn from. If anyone, Microsoft needs to learn something from this.

And no, I'm not an Micro$oft hater.

Captain Impulse

This is going to be my final comment on this article:

The act of erasing the artwork was messed up. Yes, the person who erased it is a lousy guy... this doesn't imply that Microsoft is a heart-less corporation among all the OTHER corporations that do nothing but love and love their customers. In any case, I bet if you guys knew the kid sent his priceless console off to Seattle as it happened... you'd bet there was a decent chance something wrong was going to happen... a probability that something was going to wrong and SURPRISE it did.

So, this kid is now SOL in getting that system back. If you were this kid's parents, would you have recommended he do what he did? Hell no! It's just not very smart at all. This should be a lesson learned...

Regarding Bungie's acts... it's just shameful that through the standard business procedures of any company trying to look good, people are fooled into thinking that now Bungie is full of big ol' fluffy Care Bears that cares about them, even though Bungie has never done anything to care about them personally. Some guy picked by Bungie to go around jazzing up a console for a sad kid doesn't make Bungie great. Same as how one guy who erased the pictures doesn't make Microsoft a bunch of demons... people never really said too much about Bungie caring about their customers until they gave away a console or whatever they are doing.

And I never accused anybody who debated my viewpoints on being an idiot, dick or otherwise. There are always multiple sides to a story... just try and remember that.

JDK

@ Jdk in your third or second post up here you make a good point, and i do see your underlying argument but what we are clear on is Bungie IS doing a good thing and that it wouldnt have happened if the guy hadn't sent in the priceless XBOX, but what is failed to be seen here is that it sounds to me like you think he was wrong for sending it in and that microsoft did him a favor, i don't believe this...
in an isolated case of 360 failure i would blame the boy and share your wievpoint but, lets face it, our beloved XBOX has some bugs that will never go away...
in other terms, this guy sent his 360 to be restored, just like you had sent in an old painting to be restored, but the restorer provides a service, and he knows that if the painting says picasso, he had better be damn careful with it
i am almost concluded by saying what have you done for bungie? I dont mean send donations but this boy showed that he was a halo fan true to the core by all he did to get and protect his artwork, and others have recieved their recon armor for spectacular maps, or tournament stats, point being you get out what you put in, cause as much as id love bungie to cater to me too, theyd need some more employees per online halo player...
I FINALLY sort of CONCLUDE by saying we are also seeing the small picture here,
there are a number of variables such as the man who did the wiping, he was hired to remove things from xbox consoles, and if he doesnt do his job, he gets fired... also the possibility that he has gotten his however many weeks notice and decided to be a not nice person, maybe the man who wiped it down just got divorced and wanted to crush someone elses dreams, maybe i have typedfar too much on this page already and should shut up =)

Psychotic173

@JDK: I'd agree if the signatures and stuff had been on there in a reasonably easily cleaned-off material, but this was permanent marker and the staff would have had to actually /try/ to wipe it off, and put a lot of effort into doing so. And I can't see any justification for them doing that, really - it wasn't exactly going to affect the performance of the console, and it was pretty clearly not just a random kid's scribblings.
Not commenting on whether or not Bungie is actually made up of a series of Mother Teresa clones or whatever, but the fact is that the original problem is still pretty messed up.

Achenar

@Dakobah: I really don't think sites like the Consumerist would go that far. Not that I mind a site that treats the consumer as innocent till proven guilty (if even) but I take everything I hear with a grain of salt. Either way, I think this is a nice gesture by Bungie but I fear the ugliness in people will rare its ugly head because of this.

The IGN Three Red Lights podcast had to retire the reading of the weeks red-ring incidents when they found out people were fraudulently claiming their 360s died to get their names on air (amongst other reasons I'm sure). People are just opportunistic creatures and will pray on publics will to criminalize everything corporations do. Corporations are run by people as well so the vicious circle continues :(

okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under)
