Dexter may be the greatest show of the last couple of years.

Picked up the 1st season on dvd, and am 6 eps in, and hooked.

Can't see the game being very good though. Dexter spends most of his time researching his victims and trying not to have sex with his girlfriend....doesn't seem like it would be much fun to do that in a game.

It's both. The "Dark Defender" was the comic-book super-hero in the show, based on the antics of the Bay Harbour Butcher.

On the other hand, the "Dark Passenger" is the little voice in my head that tells me to kill. I mean, tells Dexter to kill.

I agree with your assessment of the game though, it probably will end up something like that. Perhaps you'll have a "Harry's code" meter on the side that fills up, and a QTE-driven execution scene. It'll be terrible won't it?

Advice to all: never ever read the third Dexter book, it ruins so many things.

So what will it be, an episodic game (identify the bad guy, find proof of the bad guy's doings, capture the bad guy, slice the bad guy, dump the bad guy, all without being seen)

You can hardly make a sandbox kind of game with it, since Dexter's code means he has to be viewed normal, you can hardly go off sneaking into the night killing bad guys, it has to be planned carefully

@heretrix: I picked up the book in a bookstore and flipped to the back of it and read a very small amount... if you like the show, stay away from the books. If the show takes the turn the books do, then it'll be completely ruined for you. There are differences though, like I guess Rita's kids are big characters in the book but they're just typical background characters in the show. And the books have a very pronounced supernatural element that I think might just be getting started in the TV show. I didn't read much because I didn't want to ruin the show for myself, just thought I ought to warn you!

Season 2 with the Dexter/Doaks confrontation coming to a head (literally) was my favorite of the series. Really good work. If you haven't watched the show get it on DVD you won't stop watching it.

If the ESRB wasn't around, publishers would put content notices on their games willingly, but they wouldn't parent by proxy by choosing proper ages meant to play the games. Parents would then judge games like they judge movies for their kids. Or books. Or plays. Or radio shows. Or comic books. But then the ESRB wouldn't be making millions of dollars and crippling an artform by making publishers censor themselves, would they?

i don't know if the dexter story lends itself properly to game format, but given that the whole time dex is trying to avoid detection as well as find new victims the game could lead to some interesting mechanics.@Touy: i agree. i don't think it would be dexter without doakes.

Dexter is one of the best series on television today, and a way I can imagine this going is a lot like Splinter Cell: Double Agent went.

Office setting you have to sneak around, look up info, hide your tracks, tamper with evidence, hiding from Doakes and what not.

And second part can be like Thief: Deadly Shadows combined with Splinter Cell sneakery. Track down your mark, trick them into trusting you (dialog trees, hurrah!) and BANG, get in there, cut their cheek, dice em up, then you gotta dispose and clean up.

I think it could work, IF done right.

I fear this game will be a little too linear, as was my only real problem with Indigo Prophecy was (though that was supposed to play out like a movie...) That, and without the original cast aiding with the voices, it's sure to blow. Hard.

I can see it being "Hitman-esque", potentially holding an open Miami-like area with free roam similar, but not entirely replicating a 3D GTA. (More like a semi-linear aspect of No More Heroes).

Please don't crap on this game, developers, lest I deny it ever existed....like new sequels to old-school DIsney movies.

We were just joking about this the other day in the office - "oh can you imagine a Wii game based on Dexter?". Maybe you could listen to the speaker on the Wii remote to listen to your "dark passenger". As long as the special edition comes with a little rosewood box full of slides, I'm happy

Anyway, if the game tries to capture the main hallmarks of the show it'd work. The music, the deadpan inner monologues, the humour.

Though being a pessimist, here's what I expect:
- Dead-eyed character models that look almost entirely unlike the actors
- Different voice actors, to save costs
- Shitty blood-spatter forensic analysis minigame
- No actual cutting and slicing of jerks who deserve it, for the sake of getting a rating

Any developer taking this license on better do a great fucking job if they don't to end up in lots of pieces, in a bag full of rocks, at the bottom of the sea. I'm giving fair warning, so no complaints later.

For what it's worth, I think a game based on Dexter could be fantastic; it could also be a mediocre Phoenix Wright knock-off. Here's hoping they do the show justice. I don't see any reason to worry about a media backlash, either. It would be hard to criticize this game for being violent or glorifying murder without having to step back and consider the source. If this content is acceptable on television and in print, why not in games?

Thanks to the ESRB, it is not possible for this game to excel in the way that Dexter the TV show does. The TV show wallows in the emotional detachment of the main character, and leads you to sympathize with and understand a serial killer. Another game tried to do that on a much more superficial level, it was called Manhunt. You may have heard of it getting censored. Because we as gamers sat back and let the ESRB censor that, and let them continue to exist in their present form (providing proxy parenting and setting the standards by which our children live, and making sure no AO games ever exist on consoles), we deserve to have this game suck. And we deserve to have every single game that ought to contain a mature theme to be stripped and left soulless.

Looking forward to more of the series (although I really don't know how much further they can take it; the two seasons been an awesome ride thus far). Not so keen on a game, since the series' charms rely on being a detachment which lets you be both disturbed by and sympathetic to the narrator, usually at the same time. If you actually play as Dexter, I really don't know how that would work.

If they get Erik King to voice Doakes for the game, however, I may buy it simply for that. Muthafucka's awesome.

Great show, though it wouldn't be the first great TV show to get an awful game adaptation (Sopranos, The Shield, Lost etc). Thing is though, it is such a great license - if they are willing to spend the money they could get some something really decent if they wanted.

My Dark Passenger is telling me to carve up whoever makes a bad job of this game...

Minor point: let's hope it is more like the TV show than the books. The third book in the series was bloody awful, it went down this cheesy supernatural route that didn't work AT ALL.

Heh, surprised that more than two people actually watch the series. Most people I know miss out on the greatness that it is.
Anyway, this is an intelligent, witty and character-driven piece of art, which means that there's no way on Earth it could work as a game.

If the Getting Up dev team is working on this, lets hope they include sound effects this time. I really wanted to like Getting Up, but the sound effect glitch on the PS2 version just killed it for me (you would punch someone but there would be no sound). I traded it in like the next day.

Hrm, probably won't be any good but I heard 'Getting Up' wasn't the dreck I'd suspected it to be.

Not like getting Dexter wrong will piss any real video gamers off-- it's a good opportunity to make money. You never know though, Showtime or the creators of the show might actually give a damn about making a decent game.
