@Mpalm.: So Kotaku is excited by a bunch of anime screenshots and... anime screenshots? I don't know about you, but glorifying a game based on preference rather than actual quality sounds like a bad analysis.

Posting a video with pretty much no gameplay at all should have a blog title "this is why I'm excited about Valkeria Chronicles," not "this is why we're excited about Valkeria Chronicles."

The biggest problem about Kotaku is that instead of stating the facts and letting the audience decide for themselves, Kotaku just likes to tell you "this is awesome" or "this is bullshit".

@Xiedo: Yeah both of the Atlus games coming to the 360 look subpar. It's sad but Operation Darkness is actually the prettier looking of the two, the other being Spectral Force 3. Operation Darkness looks like it could be fun, but if that going 3rd person running around mechanic turns out to be any fun, then i think VoB is probably the better.

Definitely gonna buy the game, however I will have to wait for the PS3 price to drop or offer a great deal like the XBOX 360 here in Australia, bought mines a PRO system at $530 with 4 games. (1 of my choosing)

$700 bucks is too much (ausfag here), gotta wait till it drops or better yet maybe import one sigh :(.

FF12 had great voice acting (mmmmmm Fran), and I didn't hate the voice acting on the NIS SRPGs too much, so there is hope. Of course, I'd greatly prefer having the option to pick English or Japanese, with subtitles.

I looked around for some more videos and I guess the pencil sketched graphics are still there but I think that since the video was in full HD on my PS3 it has alot more detail in the video than on any compresed video on the web. So I guess I'm happy that it looks pencil sketched and not like WindWaker Cell. Not that it was bad at all I just like the fact that it has it's own art direction. Cheers to the PENCIL SKETCH..! lol

I have had the video for this since last year from my Japanese PSN account. The visuals have changed a little bit. It is still the same as far as cell shaded graphics are concerned but I noticed that in the begining it looked more like sketched pencil cell shaded graphics and not it's more cleaned up cell shaded (wind waker style)graphics. I will still get it no dought but I really loved the whole pencil sketched look that it once had. At least in the Japanese Trailers on the Japanese PSN store.

the art style reminds me of the final fantasy tactics: lion war fmvs. i'm all for a game taking a slightly different approach to visuals - and cel shading was born on the previous gen but will become a whole new thing this time.
and the issue about voice overs - they should put english voices in, and the option for subs. that way you can listen to the sound OR read the subs. preserving the japanese voices won't happen, not enough people understand spoken japanese.

Well, having played Shenmue on the DC, and then importing the EU version of Shenmue II on the DC, I can say that the game fared much better with me in its Japanese track. It made so much more sense. None of this, "Have you... seen... a black car?" bullshit.

Still, there's no fighting the inevitable. To this day, people still dislike letterboxing because they would rather have weird Pan & Scan than see "black bars". Widescreen TVs helped get rid of that, but anything on a 2.35 scope gets the same complaint. Peons. :D

It's not a very impressive trailer. The main character seems pretty manly for a chick, too - I don't want another Heavenly Sword debacle on my hands here. I also don't see any of the "fantastic" character/unit detail mentioned. If I had to make a prediction, I'd say this is pretty standard, boring RPG fare in which designers these days are a dime a dozen. *yawn*

The thing is, the people who actually care that it looks like anime, would have watched anime, and most likely have watched Last Exile or Steamboy (though that wasn't well-known).

I'm just wondering why nobody made a big deal of Eternal Sonata having done the exact same thing (except brighter) and now treat the cel-shading as something totally 'new'. Didn't we have it since the PS2s days? Albeit, it's now upgraded, naturally.

I'm sorry I dunno how to say this in a nicer way, but, you FAIL.

The game you showed moves just like any other tactical RPG and shows you a cut scene of the combat when you give a command to attack.
In Valkyria Chronicles you first places your troops, and then you get a set amout of time to move a character freely like an action game to do whatever you want, like reposition, attack heal teammates etc.

Second, about the time/story setting. The team that made this game has been making another tactical RPG franchise called Sakura Wars since 1996. The setting for that was in a parallel universe of 1920's Japan. Because of the overtly Japanese theme I don't think the game ever got translated to a English release, even though I'm sure there were people that were fans of Sakura Wars in the US also.

Probably thinking of a world wide release when the team was making the game for PS3 and wanting "Sakura Wars" to appeal to a wider audience, the setting for Valkyria Chronicles is set in a parallel universe of 1930's Europe. Sorry, nothing to do with WWII.

Looking at the video I am simply amazed at how good the Cell-shading works in the context. Although there are seconds you can see that these are 3D models(by the way they turn and such) it still retains a certain set of authenticity as if you're really playing through an anime movie/episode.

It's Sega bringing it over, not Atlus or NIS. Don't expect a JP voice track. Sega is allergic to those. In fact, I think I read in some interview or other they did once that they don't include the JP voice track because they think it alienates their American fanbase. Like the kind of person that buys a game like this isn't the kind of person that WANTS that.

Are readers confusing tactical-rpgs with jrpgs? These 2 genres are vastly different, especially in the area of level design. Tactical-rpgs are mission-centric, the player completes a set of objectives, next he watches a couple of cutscenes, buys upgrades and finally, he moves on to the next mission. (Super robot Wars is a fine example).

Personally, I find it quite disturbing when gamers start aligning Valkyria Chronicles in the same genre as Folklore or even Final Fantasty XIII. Maybe, I'm just too nitpicky.

This looks pretty sweet if generic altogether. I'll prolly pick it up. But i just hope i don't altogether forget about this game at it's launch

I agree on what you said about the visuals and certainly you can DO MORE, better techniques, expanded wolrd, more details on the ps3, etc. But this post is exalting the game ALMOST for only its visual, and on a PURELY VISUAL level, Im not excited about.It dosent get that "OMG" reaction out of me.

It reminds me of "rogue galaxy" in that at time it lucks "clunky" like the characters clothes are made out of cardboard.Like theyre still lifes with movable joints.

I guess Im waiting for "fluidity" to be wowed by a cell-shaded game, but maybe that wasnt the intended art direction and Im missing the point.

It is a stylistic choice and one I think works very well for this game's concept. Personally I could never see this even possible with the "brown" n bloom look that dominates so many "next gen" games.

@MyLittlePwny: Cel shading is gonna have that effect on game's visuals. I have to say, this is the most sophisticated cel-shading I've seen yet. Not only that, but it also incorporates a new kind of "hand-drawn sketch" style as well, which I've never seen before.

Cel-shading works for some games (Viewtiful Joe, Gears Of War) and not for others (any of the Dragonball Z games), but I think it definitely works here.

Of course, the visuals should serve only to compliment the other aspects of the game, like the characters and storyline. So if RPG's aren't your thing, or if the storyline ends up being complete crap, then all you've got is a game that's really pretty to look at but not much else.

Keep those fingers crossed!

Don't think I'm trolling, as this game does look promising, but it seemed veeeery famililar. And after a brief search I found out why. Has anyone heard of Operation Darkness?

It's an Xbox 360 exclusive published by Atlus that looks a lot like this game, except with a much darker atmosphere and non-cel-shaded graphics.

Seriously, it's a near-duplicate in so many ways. Tactical RPG taking place in WWII-era with guns and tanks and everything (plus some supernatural stuff). Also coming out stateside in 2008. And also looking a bit last-gen.

Just throwing that out there for any 360ers who think they're missing out. We all have a promising TRPG to look forward to this year.

Im playing through Rogue Galaxy, another cell shaded game and..I dont know, Im just not that impressed with this ps3 effort.

It's funny that this game never comes up when people are mentioning the "must-buy" games of '08.

This thing's got "sleeper" cel-shaded all over it. Like Wild Arms before it, this high-quality RPG will tide over fans of the genre until Final Fantasy hits. Might even convert a few :)

I didn't really went crazy over the Ryu ga gotoku Kenzan Demo, but I was surprised that it got a 9 9 9 10 score from Famitsu. Asian version from Play-Asia is only $68 including shipping. If I can find a $10 off coupon I'll order this game just because of the high scores from Famitsu.

Back to Valkyria Chronicles, this game is done by the same team that did the Sakura Taisen/Wars Series BTW. So I feel confident this will be a game with quality.

While on PS3 related topic, just read on MagicBox that Initial D Extreme Stage Arcade is confirmed for the PS3.

I think somebody at Sony made a deal with the devil or something... End of HD-DVD plus way too many good news for the PS3 all at once in one week...
