@Ehardergardens: Besides Thief, which wasn't really horror as you say, none of those games really made it mainstream. And as far as ripping it off, I think Silent Hill has surpassed Resident Evil completely in the general scariness category. In RE4 i can remember very few situations where I was surprised, much less scared. Having an infinite rocket launcher takes away all semblances of fear in a game. And even if SH did copy RE originally, as you mentioned, I think it's safe to say the master has been long and far surpassed by the student.

Ulquiorra Schiffer

@lordofsword: I think we are on the same page mostly then.

I also loved the little sub stories stories in the apartment building, and how each ghost did have a background.
The AI for Walter was broken and he would often run around in circles and with the same sound clips over and over, effectively killing any feeling of dread. Though I liked not being able to kill only to restrain the ghosts, though over all the implementation wasn't the best, I prefer this to random enemy respawns though.
Penumbra Overture has a great mechanic where you trap enemies you can't fight directly, but after you leave and come back they are magically free and you've lost your bait you used to trap them. Great potentially satisfying gameplay lost.

Ehardergardens

@Ehardergardens: I agree that SH4 had one of the best storylines, the whole thing with Walter creating an alternate world for himself haunted by his victims and his reasons was something I liked, but playing through it wasn't. The ghosts were good in theory but having to fight an enemy that you can't kill, then going through the exact same areas and doing it again in the 2nd half was just no fun to play by the end, although it might've been slightly more bearable if they had a lead character with a single ounce of charisma.

lordofsword

@Ulquiorra: FP horror? Sure you can. There's Penumbr: Overture and now black plague. The Thief series on PC, though not horror focused, had some of the most intense and scary moments I can recall. Condemned is also a good attempt that I think is on the right track. FEAR not so much.

SH1 was definitely seen as a ripoff of Resident evil's formula at the time, and frankly that aspect isn't as important as the mood, art, story, and puzzles. I don't think this will be anything like RE4, though. I don't think they will mess up that badly and confuse the two.
I'm honestly willing to let a non japanese company handle this, that's not what bothers me now. The focus in the interviews and the screenshots, monster designs are what bother me. The first footage they showed looked right out of the movie and while technically proficient and impressive, it also showed instantly too much emphasis on the generic SH setting and look of the film and the inclusion of a "nurse" monster that seems far too blatantly generic and sexual now. A new nurse look would be interesting, maybe something that was more inline with Shephard's experience, as the nurses themselves represented Alessa(heather) and James's psyche. Sh4 the nurses were at least unique and different. These are just a rehash of SH2 with more boobs and a slightly different face.

Ehardergardens

Being a huge fan of the series I have to say these screen are a bit disappointing. It looks very drab and grey, not quite as visually arresting as a SH game. But I am a wait-and-see kind of guy, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

btw, there's a lot of talk about Jacob's Ladder with regard to SH, which is a great movie, of course. For any fan of SH, especially SH2, I highly recommend you watch The Machinist, starring Christian Bale. It's more of a paranoid thriller than a straight up horror film, but the movie has sooo much in common with SH2 you'll swear you were watching an SH2 movie. It IS my SH2 movie. It really makes for a better SH movie than the SH movie, imo. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, it was directed by the guy who did Session 9.

I am ERROR

I have been following this since the beginning and was very pessimistic when I heard a western dev was handling it. I have since come around to the game and I think it will be pretty good. I don't think that Konami would just hand this game to any old shmuck team and the collective has the drive to do this right. Also there is some interesting new Silent Hill gameplay ideas being used. The edition of full Havok physics should be quite a big change for the series. You can't really tinker to much with the Silent Hill formula or people will freak the hell out. We have seen so very little for this game that I think people are drawing their conclusions a little too quickly. Wait until we see some more game footage and get more details on the game.

MrSatan

When i first picked up sh2 (my first sh woo), i didn't really like the guy. The story just seemed boring. It's only after i played through the appartment that the game drew me in.

@Koztah: The original SH had an ending that strongly suggested that Harry was still in the car and was finally dead at the end. The idea that he was still in the car the whole time and only experiencing Alessa's manifestation of the town(memory) I think is a common theory.
SH2 definitely adds to the theme of people in a moral limbo/purgatory facing their 'sins' in life.

SH3 does sort of throw that out (and had the weakest story and worst voice acting in the series for me) but some of the best art.

Ehardergardens

@Ehardergardens: as far as i know, konami didn't oversee the movie, it was mainly akira yamaoka, so that's one huge failure under his belt. the second is that he was promoted to producer for sh4, which is easily the worst in the series. and thirdly, he also oversaw origins, which is a decent game apart from the thousands of enemies in every single room coupled with the same difficult melee combat the old games had. i have no idea why they decided to promote him from composer to one of the lead designers of the entire series but it obviously hasn't had the best results.

and now he's overseeing SH5, so you can guess how that's going to turn out.

lordofsword

JL was influential to the first one as well, along with the Mist those are the two main influences from what I recall. When SH movie came out I asked people if they thought it was as good as JL because it wasn't and therefore still hadn't risen to a potential of being more than a decent Video Game movie. JL is one of my all time favorites. We should swap lists of movies in this general area.

The series was also heavily influenced by the Mist, the stephen king short, now a movie, and yet if Stephen King touched silent hill it would be ruined.
Was SK's version of Lars Van Trier's the Kingdom good? I wouldn't expect it to be. I recommend LVT the Kingdom for those that like more 'offbeat' 'horror', like Lynch and Silent Hill.

Ehardergardens

@AkumaX: Agree.
There were like 2 games that you could call "decent": "Marc Ecos Getting up" (which imho sucked) and "Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb" with was just an "ok" game. Beside those exceptions they have horrible games record, with games like "The Da Vinci Code" on it. Well even if they've had only AAA games on their list, i doubt that they would have managed to get the atmosphere, characters, design and the story right...
J-horror should be handled by japanese guys, what Climax did to SH:Origins clearly showed that. :(

neojam

just look up the monster concepts for this game (such as 2x4 head - pyramid head with a plank of wood nailed to his face, or a snake with a baby's head) and you'll realise how badly this game is going to fail in every possible way.

lordofsword

Silent Hill is in a very precarious position. The developers (and players) want new stuff, some innovation. But, deviating from the tried-and-true Silent Hill formula (deserted town, mutated creatures, lots of fog, etc.) will cause uproar and dislike among said gamers. So how can they make something new and fresh that isn't new and fresh? Granted, I love the original Silent Hill and the second one, but I wonder how much more can they do with the same setting? Resident Evil finally started to get away from Raccoon City, but like a recovering crack addict, the series keeps wanting to creep back for more.

ruslander

Silent Hill V had better be good. That's one of the few gaming series that I still keep up with because every installment is win. SHIV wasn't that great but it had an awesome story. Haven't played Origins yet though I hear it's a mess just as any horror game on a PSP would be.

Anyways, these screens look meh... I want more alternate Silent Hill and there is too much influence from the film in those screens which was influenced by the style of Silent Hill 3. We'll see where it goes but this game will never stand up to the first three and especially 2.

Phazonmasher
