It would be easier to have a dialog with you if you made a salient point about FF7.

It had one of the greatest narratives in the entire series, and one of the most elegant battle systems.

Some of the later FFs have fallen into the trap of needless complexity just for the sake of changing the system with every iteration, but I think you'd be alone in accusing #7 of that.

one MAJOR grief: complete lack of pause button is utter stupidity for a PSP game.

I can't decently play in the subway while commutting.
And no, the sleep power button doesn't do the job, you loose the fever and also the PSP has a tendency to crash on recovery one every 100th times...

I feel your pain bud. Getting the rain miracle was eazy enough, clues were right in the game itself if you bothered paying attention.

Getting the beat down though is my problem. I get into fever mode fine and start casting the rain spell but eventually end up screwing up and I have to redo fever mode to even try it again.

this game is awesome. for those of you who don't like pressing just sq-sq-O-sq over and over, you haven't got any where near the good stuff... as the action hots up it's all about defense and strategic attack. and you HAVE to keep up the combos. (a tip for the frenzy intro is that the beat doesn't change at all, so just keep the rhythm - regardless of the sound. also there's a flashing white rectangle around the edges of the screen highlighting the beat)
and to make it rain you have to find the miracle of rain - it's not in the desert, but if you've had a couple goes there you are most likely able to get to the place which has it.

this is a great game. it's really deep - and the beauty of it is that the controls are ultra simple: 4 buttons in all during the action. could you ask for any more?

i recommend it highly. mind you, it is quite hard.

Hmm, and googling Patapon and "King Arthur's World" just now, I see people who have actually played the game see that there IS a resemblance. This is just great. I'm happy. I loved that game. Between this game being inspired by King Arthur's World, and the recent indy title Aquaria borrowing from the Ecco series, I am very pleased. I never expected to be able to re-experience the game play found in these "outside of the mainstream" titles of old.

@Tyber_Zann: The game will probably seem like it has more depth when you get your 48 different units, hundreds of different equipment, 10 chants, around 10 bosses which you can fight for as long as you're able(they get stronger everytime, to my knowledge the highest level where they're beatable is high 50's) and realise that the game is a strategy game and the demo is a rhythm game.

After playing through the demo I think the scores, and sentiments, are well deserved. Go and get the demo people- it's on the PS Store for both PS3 and PC. probably one of the longest game demo's I've ever played, and that's a good thing.

I will be lining up and fighting the crowds to buy this.

I've perused a handful of screens of Patapon in the past. I never noticed it before but on the surface, this game bears a resemblance to King Arthur's World for the Super Nintendo. If the gameplay is anything like that game... fantastic!

Good that it's getting high scores all around but come on, couldn't you have at least quoted reviewers that actually got halfway through the game let alone finished it? I only read the first paragraph and found 3 mistakes. Although again, great that the games getting the recognition it deserves, even though it costs 70 dollars in Europe and 20 in NA ( this is actually the first time I've ever pirated a game, and I did it without feeling an ounce of guilt, they try to fuck me I fuck them back...)

Is it bad that I absolutely hated the demo?

And yes, I like all sorts of games. From Katamari and LocoRoco to Call of Duty 4, so no accusing fingers!

But yeah, I didn't dig this game at all. The whole 'Pata pata pata PON' bullshit really made my ears cringe. I just didn't see a whole lot of depth in this game. I tried, believe me. I wanted to give this a chance.

Maybe I'll put it on the back burner, and someday, that game will make sense.

I didn't like it so much. As a rhythm game, it's slow and not very challenging. I feel like I'm always waiting for the beat, or for the guys to sing their turn.

As an RPG, it's needlessly convoluted.

I gave it a fair chance, about four hours of gameplay before throwing in the towel.

I love it, but any ambient noise can be a distraction to keeping in time with the rhythm. Unless you're at home, I'd say headphones are essential for getting full enjoyment out of playing it.

This game is great. I don't understand why so many people are comparing it to Loco Roco, though. Yeah, the same dev studio created it, but the same PixelJunk guy created Racers and Monsters, and those are VERY differet game.

BTW, it looks like only one of those screen shots came from the actual release version of the game. There are no arial units, the both bosses pictured look different (with the crab boss' bubble attack being quite different from what is depicted) and the castle is quite different as well.

I agree that this is not an "on-the-go" game. I can't tell you how many times I've completely fucked up my game because I tried to divert my attention for just a moment.

Oh yeah, it also gets the spousal seal of approval. My wife loves the game and plays it more than I do. We sometimes have to argue over who gets to play the PSP.

@bOOmStiCK83: because we in Europe pay soooooo much more for our stuff than in the US. in Britain for example (not 100% about the rest of Europe) it's about £40-50 for a new ps3 or 360 game in most shops, which, at current excange rates is roughly $80-100!

oh yea and we gotta wait longer for most games too! (Me better, never!)

I got this game today and it is very good, plenty to do in it and it can be very hard since it doesn't give you any real help in the game. However if you persevere than you'll find a brilliant game, I've just got to that sandworm bit, it's quite hard so I'll have to go back and some better equipment.

Uh, mistake in spelling aside, you have to be the first person in history to mention "Loco Roco" and "flat" in the same sentence. Now the PS3 offering, yes that was a different story. But the original PSP title was dripping with quality and originality. Fortunately it was loads of fun to play. If anything I felt that the 3 hours it took to complete was it's only shortcoming. Me wrong?

I think this game is slightly overrated. Kotaku has been hyping this shit since like 2 months ago, so obviously it was on my radar, but I just don't really like the fact that you can only input one command to your patapons every 8 beats, it makes the game seem slow and a little too simplistic.

I played the demo, and only got as fat as the pata-pata-pata-pon and pon-pon-pata-pon commands. For some reason I figured those would be the only commands, and that I would get bored with that pretty quickly. But since there's more than just 2 combos, I guess I should give the actual game a try.

@Setzer IIDX: no, theres lots of commands, you just get new ones as you progress through the game.

Each of the 4 face buttons is a different word, and you combine the words to make a chant. so you hit say, X-X-X-square, and they chant "pata, pata, pata, pon" (I cant remember if that's the actual command off the top of my head though). You then chain these commands together to get "fever" mode which makes all your chants more powerful. I think theres about 8 or so chants in all.

My only quarrel with the game is that they don't tell you anything other than the little hints after you finish a level. I needed that rain dance to march across the desert (not a spoiler, don't worry) and I was told which two items to get, but not how to obtain them. After getting frustrated I finally looked online - which I hate doing - and saw where the rain dance was.

I believe that, and the fact you can't really play the game on the go were the only two complaints. Since my 360 is at the repair center I've been occupying my gaming time with Patapon.

@Setzer IIDX: No you press it once to attack once, you press it twice to attack twice, but all in rythm. You keep pressing the buttons according to both what YOU want to do AND the rythm, and it's like playing a rythm game that doesn't tell you the controls (and instead makes you think on what you have to do instead of showing what to do).

@Setzer IIDX: Each command is an order, there are uhm, about 8 of them.

It works like this, you will input your command, say Circle circle circle square, the Patapons will then chant the appropiate syllables, when they are done, you enter the next command based on the situation.

Its more intuitive than that, but yeah.

The music and chanting is different at different points in the game but the commands are always the same. You learn commands every so often, too, but youll use attack and more forward a lot.

Well deserved IMO. I can only hope the success is both monetary as well as critical for the Dev Team. That could go a long way toward giving some of these more creative/quirky titles more credence in the industry, as a lucrative proposition when executed as well as Patapon. Not to mention the US $19.99 price point make it accessible to far more people.

@Setzer IIDX: Im only a few hrs in but you gradually get more commands as the game goes on. There are 4 main ones: Attack, Defense, Move Forward, and Charge Up. The difficulty is actually pretty staggering for some of the fights so planning on which one to use vs the enemy's attacks can be tough.
