@Rabidsquirrel: I never said I wasn't biased. In fact I pointed out that I USED to buy only sony products, but their quality has dropped off and I won't buy them anymore. 2 Broken recievers, a broken dvd player (all with known issues that sony refused to recognize), and a couple of PS2s that are buggy.

Not to mention the different color of disks that some ps2s play and some don't, the unfinished blu-ray 1.2 standard that will make obsolete all players except the ps3, umd drives in psps that pop out disks, the rootkits they put on CDs, the high prices, and all the other stupid little things they've done over the past 10-15 years or so that people seem to forget about.

@baked ham: About the ads... lewd ads, ads promoting suicide, racist squirrels saying "I'd hit that", white is coming, Jesus/crown of thorns/playstation, animal sacrifice for publicity, racist dust balls, and the list goes on and on. Maybe some of the ads "go over my head" as you put it, but I really doubt that I've just managed to miss something in ALL of them. They have a pattern of doing consistently stupid things, none of which I would like to be associated with.

As an adult who isn't racist, or intolerant of other creeds, genders, preferences, etc, I like to distance myself from this kind of garbage. It doesn't make me look good, and it just makes the gaming community look even worse.

I was not aware the PS2 did wireless without using a repeater that actually did the wireless part without needing drivers. The problem you are reporting is inhenrent in the game and the way it uses the network card driver and has nothing to do with the PS3, that is why the game works on a wired connection and not wireless. also i too have played alot of games on the PS3 from the PS2 library with no issues.

Also can anybody tell me if ICO works on the PS3 i keep hearing it's and awesome game.

@Rectangle: Hmm. OK. And ya know I actually read about this issue elsewhere, but forgot about it (personally, I'm not an SSX fan). So this is not the first time I've heard of the SSX problems, but SSX titles remain the only ones that I can think of that don't play at all on the unit. For somebody that just wants a PS3 and the ability to play the majority of the PSX and PS2 games, the 80GB is an awesome way to go. You may sacrifice your ability to play SSX, but there are hundreds of titles that are worth playing that won't give you any trouble.

@Dommer: Well, look, I'd say that if you have a PS2 and you don't mind having that hooked up to an outlet and occupying a video input on your television (not to mention utilizing some of your physical space), then by all means keep the PS2 and just pick up a 40 GB. But if you want to free up an input, an outlet, and some space, as well as if you find the 499 MGS4 bundle to be a good deal (which it is), then sell your PS2 and do the 80GB bundle. In all honesty, it seems like a no brainer to me. Besides the benefits I already mentioned for getting rid of your PS2, think about this: the 40 GB model is still supposedly going to be priced at 400 dollars with a Sixasis. If you want a Dual Shock 3 and MGS 4, that's another 115 dollars, which already makes it more expensive than getting the 80 GB bundle when MGS4 is out, but you only have half the hard drive space, no flash & SD card readers, and no backwards compatibility. And good luck selling that Sixasis to recoup the 15 bucks, which, if you are successful in accomplishing, still leaves you without the card readers, half the HDD capacity, no BC, and your PS2 occupying that outlet, that input, and that physical space in your room.

The BC in the 80 GB is the best BC I've ever seen in a console besides the Wii which actually has all of the GameCube hardware in it, including the original memory card slots & controller inputs. The BC on the 80 GB PS3 is virtually identical to the 60 GB model, and don't let anybody tell you different. One is completely emulated, and one has more hardware doing the processing, but they both have, for all intents and purposes, the same compatibility. I can't personally think of a single PSX or PS2 game that doesn't play in the 80 GB. Now, obviously I haven't combed over the list to study each individual game, but I've got a number of games myself, and they all work fine. I've looked up a number of games I'm interested in, and they all are said to work fine. Nothing I've ever been interested in has anything wrong with it more severe than: "Throughout gameplay, the title performs at a significantly slower than normal performance speed." And both games that I've played that come with that caveat (MGS 3 and Yanya Caballista) are almost entirely unnoticeable, and when and if you notice it, it really doesn't detract from the experience.

For the convenience and value of the single, all-inclusive MGS 4 bundle, I'd say it's well worth it, and you'll probably never feel bothered by the slight and scant few instances of imperfection that pop up in some of the PS2 games.

@V1L3: Sure, they cut the price, but is that a result of removing BC or because of cheaper blu-ray prices? Also, isn't Sony totally going against what they said earlier, or are people just used to that now? Am I the only one bothered that Sony just up and changed the specs on their machine after release? Also, isn't it bothersome that they would release a bundle that wasn't working to begin with?

@Evo: By no means am I comparing Sony's BC efforts to Microsoft. Sony has done much better, however, 76% is a lot less than the original 99+%.

All I'm saying is they by no means diserve a pat on the back for releasing a bundle that ALMOST works perfectly.

@Dommer: If you don't mind having the extra system hooked up i'd tell you to go with the 40 gigabyte i personally favor the 40 gig because the heat it generates is much less than the current 80 gig who knows though maybe this new mgs4 bundled 80 gig system will have the newer chips. the 80 gig right now is on an older chipset and is much louder than it's 40 gig counterpart i mean huge difference i'd rather have a quiet system IMO.

How many Retarded jump roping advertisements have they put out that would appeal to none but the worst examples of humanity?

Please don't think I'm just an Sony lover now that my 360 red ringed, because I'm not. The ONLY reason I have a PS3 is because they actually work, and Sony actually honors their warranty. And they won't void it on you just because your console died 6 times within a one year period. I used to buy only Mcrosoft products, but that was a long time ago. Since that time they've done a lot of things to anger me. Poor products, offensive advertisements, lack of support, public statements of contempt for the consumer, and outright lies. They've lost my business and earned every bit of anger I have towards them.

Nearly every thing this company does is atrocious, and yet certain parts of the gamer community lap it up. How many times do they have to lie to us, make the community look like racists, make us all feel like wallets with legs, and worst of all continue the misconception that we're all just children with no sense of self-respect?

@Dommer: I would absolutely say that. I got rid of my PS2 because every PSone and PS2 game that I have plays just fine on my 80gig. I'm a huge action/platformer fan (Red Star, Contra, Castlevania type games), Strategy RPG fan (Disgaea, La Pucelle, Atelier Iris, etc.), RPG fan (Valkyrie Profile 1/2, Persona 1/2/3, Nocturne, Suikoden, Final Fantasies, Odin Sphere, Rogue Galaxy, etc.), and a fan of other games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, MGS, God of War, Gradius, Gitaroo Man, Intelligent Qube, Katamari, Bombastic, etc. All of them work wonderfully. I can't think of a single game I would want to play that doesn't work on it.

Because I have, and I've already made my point here, but to reiterate: the game already plays "good," the only place it can go from here is "perfect." It's not perfect, no, but I made the comparison before that the differences between MGS 3 on an 80 GB PS3 and on an actual PS2 are about as severe as the differences between Bioshock on a PC and a 360. Not identical, but anybody who doesn't think it's good enough is just too hard to please.

In Call of Duty 2 big red one (ps2 version)if my ps3 is wirelessly connected the ps2 game wont work it works fine for wired and most games work great(socom combined assault, area 51, ratchet and clank up your arsenal these games work fine wirelessly on ps3) with a wireless connection as well it's just a select few that i've had this minor inconvenience with. @ThatGuyOverThere: No. What you don't have straight is that the system works just fine. It is in no way "broken." It will play all of your Metal Gear Solid games. The only game that doesn't play "perfect" is MGS 3, and it plays so well that somebody who never played it before would even notice that it wasn't playing the way it was intended to. Even I, someone who played it numerous times on the PS2, noticed no hitches during gameplay. 99% of the cutscenes play at 99% of the original framerate, and if the only system you have to play MGS3 on is an 80GB PS3, then you'll be more than thrilled with it. If you're somebody who is dissatisfied with it because of 1% slowdown 1% of the time, then you're just too fucking hard to please. And anybody who tells you it's worse than that is just lying or trying to scare you, or is just plain uninformed. Because the game plays better than fine, it plays almost perfectly. It plays at least as well as, in comparison, Bioshock on the PC vs. Bioshock on the 360, if not even closer to being the same experience. And as far as the rest of backward compatibility goes, again, I ask anyone to give me one example of a PS2 or PSX game that doesn't play just fine on the 80GB PS3 (and again, bonus points if it's actually a good game, at least in your opinion). How is it that it's "not bad" when Sony has backwards compatible stuff mostly working when it was the same company that lambasted Microsoft when the original 360 BC list was short? They were talking up how the PS3 was entirely backwards compatible, then they go out and strip out some of it so that even their AAA titles don't always work, and now they have a PS3 that is not backwards compatible at all.

It's the hypocrisy that turned me off from the backwards compatibility capabilities of the PS3, not the actual amount of games.

I'm a bit concerned though. The only problem that was solved was listed on Sony's website as follows:

The other two issues haven't been listed as solved:

Having a new model of the same console be released with less capable features is, in my eyes, terrible. I really don't want to keep previous generations of the PS just to play my older games without slowdown during gameplay or cutscenes.
Seeing as how one of the PS3's strong points is its ability to function as a High-Def movie player, media-hub computer extender, and game console all-in-one makes the thought of NOT having stable, hardware controlled backwards compatibility a non sequitur.

Wait. Let me get this right, Michael. You're basically congratulating Sony for putting out a bundle that's only partially broken? Shouldn't you be questioning why they're not recoding it to make it work instead?

It bothers me that they can do this sort of crap and get away with it. What if you went to buy a car, and the dealer said "it goes at full speed most of the time, but once in a while it will slow down a bunch and there's nothing you can do about it." Would you buy the car? What about if you went to a bakery for a box of donuts and found out that one out of every half dozen donuts was moldy. Would you buy it? Would you keep shopping there?

This is why I don't buy Sony products anymore. I'm absolutely sick and tired of their view of their customers. We are not valuable customers to them, we are just resources to be exploited. How many times have they lied to us about upcoming products just to drum up publicity? Dual HDMI anybody? How many times have they shown pre-rendered CGI and claimed it was real-time game play? How many offensive advertisements have they put out that would appeal to none but the worst examples of humanity?

Please don't think I'm just an MS lover, because I'm not. The ONLY reason I have a 360 is because they extended, and actually honor, their warranty. And they won't void it on you just because your console got dusty. I used to buy only Sony products, but that was a long time ago. Since that time they've done a lot of things to anger me. Poor products, offensive advertisements, lack of support, public statments of contempt for the consumer, and outright lies. They've lost my business and earned every bit of anger I have towards them.

They went about this all wrong. They should have compiled all the games on to 1 BR disc and re-coded them to run on the PS3. I've played MGS 3 Subsistence on my PS3, all the way through. 80 GB PS3, at that. And those slow-down issues are practically non-existent. It was only somewhat apparant during some of the cutscenes that there was a bit of slow-down, but it didn't take away from the awesomeness of the cutscenes at all. I didn't notice any slow-down at all, ever, during the actual gameplay. Period. None. It's good enough, simple as that.

I also played MGS 2 on my 80GB PS3, and it plays perfectly. I've played countless PS2 and PSone games on my PS3, and I've never really noticed a single issue with any of them, except like 2 games which have slight audio distortion and occassional graphical hitches that don't in any way get in the way of the experience, and that most people probably wouldn't even notice.

I find that the 80 GB PS3 has better backwards compatibility than the 360 does, easily.

i have a ps2... and if that packs it in i can pick another up for about 30 quid if i must. mind you i have a 60 gig ps3 so i have BC covered too.
BC isn't essential, i play most of my ps2 games on my ps2, but it's nice to play with wireless controls, and to simply skip to psn titles etc.
i reckon sony will give software bc a little more care at the end of the year or the beginning of the next, they're pretty busy trying to keep the ps3's head above water for now - although mgs4 is going to be a big help.
i totally want mgs4 though. i can't wait.

Hmm...no 98-100% compatibility is a no go. I'm going to have to skip out on the MGS4 bundle. I had heard rumours about that in the past (the removal and/or software emulation of PS2 compatibility) I'm appalled that they actually did those things. I have a Wii and a 360, and only want a PS3 for a few games coming out in the future and it's a great blu ray player so I haven't exactly followed every SKU. I hope the backwards compatible ones can still be found for a decent price. Either way, Can't wait to play MGS4.

Their web site also says that SSX Tricky works fine with the 80GB PS3. It actually crashes almost as soon as you start playing the game.

Not bad? From a company who prattled on and on about backwards compatibility when Xbox 360 came out and sounded their BC horn as loud as they could at launch, the fact that you get hiccups on a major PS2 game is appalling!

I'm gonna be getting a 60GB PS3 in a couple of weeks. The difference in HD space is negligible, especially considering I can put any 2.5 in there, and the 98% compatibility makes it worth the while.

Yeah, I've been playing MGS3 on my software emulation PS3. When you get spotted the framerate can drop and it appears as though everything is moving in slow motion. It was also particularly bad during The Fury boss fight. Anytime those fire effects showed up really. It only made the boss easier so I can't complain.
