@Aethyr: Um. Did you get the impression this ad was targeted at the casual gamer? Or, you were just responding to the comment in the original post? Okay that makes more sense...

The ad was ok and clearly shows what you'll get in the game, which could be a good or a bad thing sales-wise. :) Not quite sure why everyone is talking about the woman - she's only onscreen briefly, there's two guys as well? All of them are models... At least it looked kind of like they were actually playing the game this time, i.e. the movements were similar to those you'd actually make.

It would be an amusing surprise if this got #1 in the charts but, yeah, probably not going to happen. Still, let's see.

quen

@Lixie: Part of the drought was that gamers were losing interest in established genres. This means that (rightfully) excellent western platformers would not attract their attention, since they were tired of them. I don't know why either. I do know that the industry was picked back up by largely non-conventional software and platforms and that even today the big sellers in old genres are from established franchises and licensed games.

Momotaro Dentetsu isn't a train simulator either. If you don't know what the games you're talking about are then stop, and even if it was a train simulator, ask yourself why train simulator fans should be buying American shooters and action games: do they provide a better train simulating experience? An FPS should be targeted at Japanese FPS fans, but there aren't very many. Do you know why? Because while the American PC market has been obsessed with the genre since the early 90s, no such boom existed in Japan. Before the games can explode in sales, they need to actually create an audience for them. Japanese gamers also didn't fawn over Blizzard like PC gamers here did, so the franchise pull the game has has no effect on them. The Momotaro Dentetsu series on the other hand has been around for about 2 decades, is one of the bigger names in a a genre very familiar to Japanese gamers, so it selling more than a popular Xbox360 game should not come as a surprise at all. The fact that you don't get why more people bought it instead of Halo just shows your own ignorance in how you're looking at things, but like Halo is to many Japanese players it's a foreign unfamiliar genre that doesn't appeal to you. Or maybe it might appeal to you once you learn what the genre actually is, I don't know =|

rezo

@celery: Who said "OMG JAPAN HAET AMERICA"? No one here said that. (And since I'm bored and stuck at work, get ready for a long and well-researched response.)

The amazing, Game of the Year worthy, titles I mentioned all sold under 100,000 life-time copies in Japan. God of War 2, one the best looking and playing PS2 games ever; "Uncharted: El Dorado no Hihou", having both the best graphics and narrative of any PS3 game to date in any market; and "Call of Duty 4", for the obvious reasons; all of these great games are at the same commercial success level as "Tea Dogs Room DS" and the overwrought uninspired "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny: Alliance vs Zaft II Plus".

Woops, I'm sorry, the mediocre barely-worth-it's-license "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny: Alliance vs Zaft II Plus" sold more than both God of Wars, "Uncharted", "Call of Duty 4", and "Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction"...COMBINED! Gundam sold just 490,000 copies in total. Which by the way is what "Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core" sold in its first week. Did I mention "Dairantou Smash Brothers X" (a.k.a. Super Smash Brothers Brawl) sold over 800,000 copies in its first week. I think that should put "God of War II: Shuuen No Jokyoku's" total sales of 40,000 into perspective. It's a critically acclaimed game, has amazing graphics, with great playing mechanics, has an awesome story, and was on the the massively popular PS2 console. But it was still outsold by over 5 to 1 by "Momotarou Electric Railway 16" on the same system.

No one is saying Japan hates America. But there is strong sales evidence to show that Japan does largely IGNORE the great advances the West has made in game development in the past decade. EA, Sony, and Microsoft have been trying to break this barrier but their efforts have been fruitless.

Further, the game industry in Japan was going through a recession prior to the launch of the DS. To stay afloat many publisher/developers merged. Namco and Bandai merged. Sega and Sammy became one. Even perennial powerhouse rivals Square and Enix merged. During this time big budget AAA console games were few and far between. Store shelves were filled with cheap low-budget generic knockoffs. Bored with "generic anime-RPG #149" or "generic anime-2D-fighter #62" did Japan turn to the West for quality gaming during this drought? No, instead Japan largely migrated from console to portable gaming sales wise. Despite the West offering quality series like "Jak and Daxter", "Ratchet and Clank", or "Sly Cooper" in a time when quality Japanese console platformers were scarce, Japan simply wasn't interested. Why? Who knows.

It goes beyond console games. Blizzard just announced that "World of Warcraft" has over 10,000,000 subscribers. It is dominating, or if not has at least a strong presence in North America, Europe, China, and South Korea. However, it only managed to rank number 81 in Japan for January 2008.

Does Japan secretly have 80 MMORPGs that are bigger and better than WoW that simply no one outside of Japan knows about?

So to answer your assumption that a game be merely "a good game" to warrant strong Japanese interest in playing it?: Yes and No. You may get enough to match the 16th installment of a train simulator; but even the greatest Western made games have yet to be anything more than niche titles with niche level sales. There might be some hope for Western games in Japan. Halo 3 sold a respectable 64,000 it's first week, but quickly dissappeared from the charts and only managed to move just under 100,000 copies total. I think I have shown just how irrelevant 100,000 copies is in the Japanese gaming market. It was a small success at best. Hopefully, it marks the first step in a turnaround for Japan's interest in Western games. But until the day a Western game makes more than a meager short-lived spark on the Japanese sales chart, don't be surprised when people assume even great Western games will have sluggish or less sales in Japan.

Lixie

I still haven't done a second playthrough in MP3 yet. :(

My favorite of the Prime games is the first one, by far (3rd favorite game ever). I like the other two evenly. I like how Prime 1 feels much more like an adventure than the others. Prime 2's progression was overtly segmented (go to area 1, collect 3 keys, beat boss, repeat at areas 2 and 3). Prime 3's was too linear and restricted, making the game feel too much like a traditional FPS than a Metroid game, and it also suffered from the "go to area 1, beat boss, repeat" problem I had with Prime 2. I blame everyone who complained about backtracking in a /Metroid/ game.

I think that MP2 was a bit more difficult than it should have been, but it was still very playable. Unfortunately, I never did beat it on hard mode. I was able to make it all the way to the Emperor Ing fight, but I couldn't get past it, so I didn't touch the game in a while. I finally went back to it, and was able to beat him, but the Dark Samus battle at the end was a brick wall. I used up most of my ammo in the Emperor Ing fight, so it was (seemingly) impossible to beat her under the time limit. It's so frustrating to get so close to the end, just to end up in an unfair fight.

Arteen

Metroid Prime 2, hard? Hardly. Well, at least that's not how I remember it. lol wait no, I guess some of the guardians took a dozen or so tries to get past.

Still, I rarely had problems with ammo and the dark world was actually easier than the light world most of the time since you had constant healing bubbles. Besides, the bosses were just so awsome--Corruption really failed me in comparison. The Leviathan battles are just so bland and seem to run together in comparison to Amorbis, Chykka, and Quadraxis.

Iunno, I do like Corruption in the end, but Echoes is still so much its superior. I even got quite a bit out of the multiplayer. One of my favourite video game experiences in the end. I'm having a bit of trouble getting into a second runthrough of Corruption since Elysia is pretty much the only planet whose atmosphere I like.

SolFalling

Now that's a good commercial... can't go wrong with showing lots of real gameplay set to Gandrayda's music. The US Wii game commercials, MP3 included, are just blurs and they wouldn't tell anything to someone who hadn't previously heard of the games. I hope it'll sell well in Japan though... it's an awesome game with controls that make a dual analog FPS setup seem pretty lowsy.

I'm currently on my third playthrough of MP3. I took 22 hours to start on Veteran, bullied my way through Normal in 9+ hours, and now I'm up to Helios on Hyper. I love that it lets you keep your scans from game to game. It's definitely harder on Hyper, but only Mogenar has given me much trouble so far and is still a breeze compared to Echoes on Hard. I know the last bosses are going to take many tries through... I barely scraped by as it was on Veteran.

Mezodon

@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: In every Metroid game that gave the option, Hard mode simply made you take a crapton more damage. I'm fine with tradition.

As far as Wii ads go, this is probably the best of the bunch for me. Only a woman can turn that handlebar with such finesse.

I'm playing this game right now and I'm working on the destruction of the second Leviathan seed. I cannot believe how much I love this game. This is probably the only jump from 2D to 3D in any series where the 3D version had that gave the same great feeling the old one did. I've played the first Prime, but I've yet to touch the second. From what people are saying about the jump in difficulty, I think I'm gonna have to pick it up. ;D I started Corruption out on Veteran mode and I'm quite comfortable with the difficulty. Word of advice to anyone playing Veteran: Hyperdrive more often. You may be wasting 1 bar of life, but you might end up wasting 3 more without it.

Why not just get us better AI or give the enemies new, powerful attacks instead of lame "I'm diesel, I can take a million shots" enemies. Still loved the game, didn't like Hypermode...just sayin'

Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.

@Aethyr: I agree. I never understand that nonsense. Let's be real, there are some games that are just simply not for the casual audience. Wipeout, F-Zero, Armored Core, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil, MGS...if a developer tries to dumb down the gameplay for the casual audience then the title suffers.

Case in point...SSX Blur and to a lesser degree...Metroid Prime 3

I enjoyed MP3, but it's was painfully obvious that the worlds were smaller than Prime and Prime 2 and it was far easier than Prime 2. Personally, I enjoyed Prime 1 and 2 more because of the scale and the difficulty. Although Prime 3 will also get high marks in my book for the controls. It's a shame really. This push for the casual audience makes me truly believe that Nintendo is shunning the core audience for not supporting them for the last two generations.

Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.
