Two things.

The game was being played as a continuation of Stewart's earlier joke about what the Hollywood types do during commercials. It was funny.

When you win a point on Wii Sports Tennis, it shows a replay of the last volley. The game didn't keep playing once they stopped.

1) A what 30+ year old guy playing against a 11 year old is stereotyping that gaming is only for kids? right...

2) They played a physical sports video game, instead of spending hours going through every single possible genre of game out there during a short interval break, and somehow that means they've misrepresented gaming?

Jon said playing it made him tired (physically),that trivialises it? so I guess when the Wii was released and all the people on the internet/news going on about how surprisingly tiring playing it was made the Wii into a novelty? Guess playing sports in school is a novelty too, also going to the gym or going swim or anything that physically tires you must be a novelty as well...

3) So unless the game is 'art', it can't be enjoyed by people or shown or enjoyed at the oscars? Who are you to say what is and isn't art? give me a reason why Wii Sports can't be considered one of the representation of art for gaming? because its not some generic fps involving aliens? terrorists? monsters? because it doesn't involve dropping items through 'portals' to solve puzzles? because its not 'pretty'? Because it doesn't show the side of humanity that revels in mindless violence and stealing of cars in a pretty realisticly represented virtual city? Because it doesn't have at least 40 hours worth of story line to follow?

The interval was just that, a short time to just relax and have fun. All I saw from that is that the media accepting that video gaming, IS about fun, and ISN'T bad for you, ISN'T just about playing games involving violence sex and gore, which is what the real stereotype view of gaming is, its not just its "Video games are for kids", its for "Video games are for kids that want to play violent immoral games".

Much better than Fox News who's decided every tradegy that happens in america needs to start with the headline video gamer(s) .....

Let me risk going off-topic a little and give you a hint on enjoying the Oscars (which I do respect, without them I would never have seen the excellent Juno and No Country For Old Men): we have a party, make popcorn, and give everybody who shows up a ballot for all the major categories. The people who make the most accurate predictions win some kind of little door prize. (My crafty wife will usually make little clay sculptures of some of the characters from nominated movies.)

Sure, it's four hours I could have spent playing No More Heroes, but any time spent drinking beer with friends is time well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Gotta love all the comments from annoying kids who don't care about the awards.

What is it with Americans in our generation anyways? Everyone just sits at their computer doing nothing. Up and down my dorm hall yesterday, nobody wanted to watch it. I brought it up to people online and they didn't even know it was on. Something special happens and nobody cares, they just want to go about their sad fucking existence.

It's like people who say they don't care about Christmas. Not people of other religions who don't celebrate it; I'm talking these douches who of course were raised on it, but now are just bored by the idea and want the world to get back into the normal swing of things. What's wrong with you? Why don't you want to change the monotony? I don't understand it at all.

When I saw Conan wailing away "Creep" on a real guitar with the rest of the staff on Rock Band, I really wished I was that tall, went to Harvard, and perhaps even had an inkling of the awesomeness that Conan seemed to exude on that highlight.

I mean, I totally agree with you about the value of watching the Oscars as a general media consumer, its pointless and vapid to the extreme. That said, I do think some of the amazing work being done in Sound, Special Effects, Costumes, etc right now needs to be recognized, usually even with a crappy script and sub-par Actors those people still do great work. It probably doesn't require the crappy television program, if the Writers hadn't come back we could have avoided that and people still would have gotten awards, I assume thats what most people are referring to when they lament the end of the Writers Strike, if they had just waiting 2 more weeks we could have all been spared the Oscar program ;)

Also the idea that Nintendo paid anybody for this is kinda silly, why would they need or want more advertising for the Wii right this moment? I'd guess their ad agencies are totally focused on the upcoming Smash campaigns at the moment, not on stuff like this.

*sigh*, more of the "We don't have any writers so lets "entertain" via a live demo of a game that simple enough for the host to play and popular enough for the audience to give a flying sh*t." This must have been the PA's idea.

Although I'm the kind of gamer who can enjoy myself by simply watch my friends playing on of the abundant single player experiences they all own; instead of diving into the pile looking for one of the three games they own with a co-op/off-line multiplayer experience. This sort of sh*t is more of a "shiny fake gold jewel" used to catch our interest even though it becomes GLARINGLY OBVIOUS the host has no clue whats going on and then attempts to make it alright by inserting their own brand of "hilarious" dialogue. (This is by no means pointed at John, he's a great guy who show I don't watch, but I certainly not gunning at him). My opinion is more along the complaint that the Hosts of my Mom's favorite daytime Television Programs start to notice the lack of the topics in the past Writer-less weeks, and their bland attempts to showcase games from last year has her Screaming for me to come over and see this because she thinks I care.

I'm being harsh, this is only a Movie Awards ceremony, but I tend not to enjoy my media preference being "Show and Tell"`d on another media that can't seem to come up with a good "movie media" specific spoof on it's own.

@mva5580: Actually, I consider the Oscars the most reputable of all the award shows. There's still a great deal of regard and respect for the art of film and the medium itself, and the ceremony has a high tendency to highlight that.

What seems to shit on it all are the entertainment outlets like E! that care about a) who wins, b) who gets "snubbed," and especially c) what people are wearing on the red carpet. But the ceremony deals a lot with the medium as an art, and there are plenty of films and artists in the industry that they honor for their work that I know I haven't heard of, because they represent the medium at its finest.

The Grammys are a whole other story, though...

Anyways, I really didn't care for Wii Sports being highlighted at the Oscars. Here are my issues with it:

1) Jon Stewart was playing tennis against the 11 year-old that sang earlier in the show. This only furthers the stereotype that games are for kids and are only toys.

2) They played Wii Sports. Though old, the game is shown to represent the gaming industry as a whole. All Jon needed to say was "Am I supposed to be tired," to also further the idea of games as a novelty.

3) It was played at the Oscars. As I talked about earlier, many feel as well the Oscars are actually more reputable of an awards ceremony. It represents an art that we can all relate to and appreciate. Now we're shown a snippet of a game to represent it as a child's toy, or a novelty for adults, and this juxtaposes a misrepresented art medium with the much loved and beheld Oscars.

It actually could easily offend those that hold, justly, Video Games as an art medium itself, though young. In many ways, this only furthered these unjust stereotypes of the medium we cherish, and I can't help but feel it was done intentionally. After all, aren't movie producers nervous that Xbox Live will ruin their box office profits?

For one thing, I can't imagine anything on television being more boring than The Oscars. It's like a Paid Programming show for movies. If I ever actually get pulled into watching it, A) I feel uncomfortable after 5 minutes, and then B) I leave the room.

The fact that people actually watch a show like that shows how truly enamored the American public is with celebrity, because that's all it is. A bunch of actors and actresses in a "real life" environment so everyone wants to see how they look, act, etc.
