first time posting- be gentle. ;-)
My bf has both the PS3 and 360. ( a Wii, too, but that's not the point.) I am a casual gamer. I have played a few games here and there. This is the first game I've seen where I may make my bf wait, so I can finish playing! It doesn't hurt that the girls are pretty cute. :-p
This is a must buy game. Now, only to decide if I give it to him as a gift, or just get it for myself, and decide he can play. ;-) He'd have to admit; I buy him a TON of games, so he's never lacking for new entertainment. (I DO have to work, I can't be with him all the time. :-p )

I love the light, pastel palette. I understand when people complain about 'washed out colours/palettes' in other games, but I'm getting kinda tired of all the high contrast, super-saturated, dark games. This is a nice visual change of pace.

Awesome - I'd been keeping track of the trailers for this on the JP PSN store, and I'm really happy they're bringing this over.

I'm still awaiting announcements about Western (well European, but you Americans should get them too I suppose) releases for Record of Agarest War (would have been the perfect game to keep me busy til Disgaea 3's Western release) and Eternal Sonata (the PS3 version seems to have completely slipped off the radar, unfortunately).

@Seiryuu: Those are actually very good sales per territory. They aren't selling in Japan and that's the problem. Now if these were multi-platform games then they would benefit from being in the platform that dominates a territory and gain from those sales... though 200K+ usually means a game paid for itself, 400K+ usually means a guaranteed s sequel; this is the beauty of multi-platform. Clearly, MS being the publisher, those games wont go MP but Sega doesn't have that limit. It's really unfortunate.

Yakuza3 not coming to 360 is a huge mistake considering the west will have a good appetite for it because of the good will generated by Yakuza2 on the PS2. If and when they release it on the PS3 and it sells well in the West then that's just money that Sega left on the table.
...
I just think Sega does not understand how to make a brand thrive anymore.

I was really looking forward to this game, like everyone else for its eye popping visuals and style and what seems like a great story and clever idea for a RPG, but I didn't realize it was a strategy RPG - not a real big fan of that genre. = / coupled with the hit of it being on the PS3 it's now off my radar. I can't find the sales for the original Xbox games but I remember Orta's dismal performance being part of why Sega decided to stop giving the 360 so much exclusive support as they were at the start. I think that only compiles sales from when the games were in the top whatever of the games charts tho, but it usually goes downhill from there.

@greeble: Well that thinking for VF5 lead to a major misstep for that franchise on Sega's part. If they'd launched on both platforms, the could have surfed the momentum of a multi-console launch; especially in a genre that is proving to be lucrative in the western market given what's in the pipe. This could prove to be true for J-games if you look at the titles that have been shipped on 360 that have been categorized as "J-games" and "J-RPGs". The 360 is widely accepted as being the cheaper of the two platforms to develop for and I'm sure MS would more then welcome Japanese publishers to develop on their console by even offering various financial incentives. many of the development costs such as localization and art assets, planing, etc... would be sharable across multiple platforms and what would be left is the cost of porting to or from the 360. I think Sega would do well to follow Capcom's business model.

@okenny :): Strategy RPG's tend to do poorly in the US. This is merely just a translation of a completed game for the US, easier and cheaper than porting it to another system. The game is no doubt going to sell poorly in the west, majority of its sales are going to be in Japan. The work to put it on 360 is likely just not worth it for a game thats likely not going to be a big hit.

This kind of game tends not to do good on 360 (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, etc..) on the other hand this type of game tends to do great on PS2, and a lot of PS2 owners either have or are getting PS3's for games like this/Disgaea etc.

From a Xbox fanboy perspective, it would suck to not have every game on your console no matter the costs. Sega probably figures it's not worth it.

And if it wasn't built from the ground up with multiplat in mind, it might be a while and a lot of expense to port which, considering past performance of the genre in 360 especially in Japan would be hard to justify. If it was an action game I can see how it would not make sense.

It's not however so it makes perfect sense. For things that make no sense see Tales of Vesperia hitting X360 first (series that usually does well in Japan, not so much in the west/or at all). Gotta keep in mind that the companies aren't in the business of propping MS but making money. This game was probably designed with Japan in mind and the West comes as an afterthought.

They might be persuaded if MS throws a few hundred million I guess, but after Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey and previous ventures with Sega on Xbox exclusive games (Shenmue 2 {MS killed the American DC version with money punches} Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Grind Radio, et all.) it is very possible that neither Sega nor MS have continued appetite for such an experiment.

I'll get this for my PS3 when the next pricedrop/DS3 bundle comes :D

@Neofire: What I find weird is that Tales of Vesperia is a 360 exclusive. THAT makes no sense to me. The 360 has plenty of JRPG's, and they seem to want to continue that tradition... but all those games would probably sell way better on PS3. They aren't terribly successful on the 360, but they keep releasing more and more on that platform, while the PS3 gets practically nothing. It seems a little backwards to me. I will play Tales of Vesperia regardless of the console, but I really don't understand why they think it would do better on the 360. To my mind, it almost certainly will do worse on the 360 than if it were on PS3.

@Dakobah: Strategy RPG's are level based instead of an open world which has encounters. Usually the mission has an objective to achieve or you simply gotta defeat all enemies.

Strategy RPG's are basically one long battle that involves tactical positioning and movements. In standard RPG's you basically just choose your attack type or such and have your character do it. Often movement is not done at all or you are limited to an engagement window.

Strategy RPG's are more like tactical board games or such where you control a small battlefield of troops, instead of a group of heroes versus random monsters in a one on one engagement.

Anybody else find that since the new style has hit the comments section, the @ links don't work? I hit the link to jump to the specific comment, and they always just take me to the top of the page. Just curious if this is a problem on my end or if it's just a bug that was introduced with the revision?

It doesn't look this will come to 360, or at least anytime soon. Sega makes a lot of exclusives for all consoles and hardly ever ports them unless they were multi-plat from the start. Between this and Yakuza 3 makes me think Sega is one of the few companies that will put any effort into PS3 at all.

Screenshots don't do this game justice, to really see the effect of the "CANVAS" system, you need to watch a trailer for it. It's literally like a moving watercolor painting.

I was going to import this anyways, since Japanese copies of Sega games have the major languages on it.

So it's Batallion Wars: Eternal Sonata edition. The art style seems way too 'Advance Wars pre-DC' to me, I couldn't help laughing at how silly it looked when I checked out the trailer. Not in a good way.
I'm sometimes too quick to judge, but I just am not a fan of this generic anime cell shading, regardless of how polished said cell shading is. The game probably plays well though, and I loved BW.
