Hmmm... I dunno, given that you can probably pick one up from some panicking schmoe for $30 or so ($50 new in stores now apparently) and I'll bet you'll also soon be finding HDDVDs in the $3.99 bargain bin, that's not a bad investment to get some high def viewing (last I heard, there's quite a good library of HDDVDs...). Plus it plays DVDs so if you're using your 360 as a DVD player, here's a way to reduce the mileage you put on your console's drive.

everyone keeps saying, why use the external player to play DVDs when the system plays DVDs. Well IDK, maybe because this way u can be lazier and keep your game in the system, and swap the DVDs out of the other drive. Maybe there is some logic in putting wear on the add on rather then the installed rom drive in the system. Maybe people do find it quieter when it is playing movies.

Either way, why knock them for finding use for something you are claiming is useLESS?

Sure, the article is funny, but come on people. Dont blast people with "ha ha told you so" comments, when it could have easily been the other way.

Use it to rip your HD DVDs (and some that you rent) onto an external HDD. Then you can watch them on a media center (like the PS3). Or burn them to Blu Ray in a year or two when BD burners are cheap.

Just like you can still use your NES as a toaster and your Atari 2600 as a snow shovel. Or a Sega Master System as part of a cricket bat. Or a 3DO to prop up part of a couch when a leg falls off. Actually, I like the sounds of that last one; as much as I hate it though, IT WILL STILL PLAY MY CURRENT 3DO GAMES.

I have tons of old consoles and handhelds that are no longer supported (and Toshiba is still offering product support, they just aren't making any more hardware), but I have been able to amass a fair collection of games for each that prevents me from just abandoning them. I suppose if all you had was that King Kong disc that came with the system, maul it if you want to. Otherwise, enjoy what you've got.

/I think this horse died some time ago. Better give it few more whacks to make sure.

I've found that the HD DVD drive has a lot more features as a drive for regular DVDs than the 360 itself does out of the box. One feature it offers, which is incredibly rare on regular DVD players, is the ability to take a non-anamorphic 16.9 image, which would be windowboxed on all sides on a widescreen TV with most players, and *perfectly* zoom in so the image fills the whole screen with no cropping or overscan. It's not a feature that a lot of people probably need, but I watch a lot of advance screener discs from TV networks for my job, and while these days 90% of the programs I'm sent are 16x9, only about 10% of the discs they're on are anamorphic.

Yes to all questions. It's a fine up-converting DVD player. The drive is near silent, the noise level between the two are night and day. Also, from what I've read, you can rip HD-DVDs to your computer with it.. And it will still play HD-DVDs past, present and future, short as the future may be. So not that bad for $50

:S When none of disc drives in my families PCs wanted to read one of my burned cds made with the crummiest media available (GQ from Frys, amazingly bad discs), I popped it in the HD dvd player and it read it first try without the errors the other dvd readers were getting. Third time that has happened in the past month. Also came in handy when I built a computer for someone but I didnt have the disc drive they wanted to use available so I used it as an external disc drive (I dont have any other external disc drives). For me at least, its a damned good damaged dvd reader so I still like it.

Also, I never owned an HD-DVD which probably is why I dont resent it. I love netflix :D

@SG79: I heard somewhere that it's quieter than the 360's DVD drive though. Also, although probably not worth $50, but I guess it would mean you wouldn't have to take whatever game you're playing out of your drive in order to watch a DVD.
