@eugaet: After thinking about it...the nunchuk is more or less a one-handed 500XJ. Someone else thought so, too...found a comparison pic.

So if there's a nunchuk-only controller option on some of these C64 games...that would be pretty cool.

eugaet

Oh man, and I also am remembering all the hours I spent on Defender of the Crown. Oh my.

Dang it all, and Elite. The title that launched the idea open ended game world, and is the father of the space-sim games of today (wasn't that part of Freelancer's "bill" that it was supposed to be a "successor" to Elite?).... (granted, I don't know if I could force myself to play Elite again, holy cow what a time-sink-hole that would be.... )

That's it... I'm sure there are about a hundred other games out there that I'd LOVE to see on there...

Again, please, please, please bring this to the US.

Mok

Oh. I am *so* totally buying these if they come to the AU VC. My C64s are busy being used for cynthcart and prophet64 in my music room.

IK and Uridium are both great titles. Here's hoping for wizball, last ninja series, paralax, epic, gribblies day out, even some of the old D&D gold box games. omg.

actually, just bust them all out, i'll buy them. nyom nyom nyom. Admittedly, I used to get my games back in the day for like $10 off the covers of Zzap and Commodore Format, which used to have 2-4 full games on them... so $5 a game does seem a little greedy these days...

Also... wont some of these games be hard to play without a keyboard?

Polite Society

Sigh...here we go with the "OMGEE...paying 5 dollars for a videogame?! RIDICULOUS!"

You're not paying for the cost it takes Nintendo to download the game to your Wii! The filesize makes no difference. You're being charged based on the gameplay value of the games themselves and how much you'd have to pay to buy the actual physical copies. I would have to imagine some rare C64 games go for a hell of a lot more than 5 bucks these days.

I certainly hope the people who whine about having to pay 5 bucks for a Virtual Console game go into game stores and demand to know why they're paying 50 dollars for a videogame when the plastic the DVD is made out of only costs 10 cents. It makes about as much sense.

Nate_Birch

I'm guessing those of you who consider the C64 "pre-NES" are from the US, right?

If so, then you missed out on some of the later C64 games because you moved on to the consoles a lot earlier than we did here in Europe. The C64 and other home computers were really cultivated in Europe and that's where the best games for those machines were made. Check out some YouTube videos on games like Turrican, IK+ and The Last Ninja (1-3) to see some of what the C64 became capable of.

It also has one of the most celebrated sound chips in computing history and one that rivaled any of the 8-bit consoles with their blippy-bloppy soundtracks. The SID chip spawned some of the best computer and video game music of all time. Do a MySpace search for SID music.

Bearing all this in mind, I don't think 500 points is unreasonable for good C64 games.

inphanta

I had a Vic 20 and an Amiga, but no C64. I can maybe see buying an Amiga game for $5, even though they were barely more than that at the time, but $5 for something earlier? I loved my 2600 and have bought the compilations of about 80 games for $20, but if someone told me that I had to spend even $3 to get one of those, I would kindly escort them from the building. We should expect more from Nintendo, more than overpriced ports. Anyway, until they offer online multiplayer supported by the emulator (no change to the ROMs are necessary) I won't be spending another penny on the VC.

kingofallcosmos

Honestly, for the amount of game and the quality of gameplay you get in some of these titles, $5 isn't a bad deal at all. Some of these games I played for months on end, if not years, and I still consider them some of the best games I've played. If you think the pricing is wrong due to the graphic quality or the ROM size...all I can say is I feel sorry for you because you're missing out on some truly epic games.

These games will sell...as long as they're bringing over the quality titles.

eugaet

Sure, European releases keep getting delayed, but at least we'll soon be able to pay 5 euros to destroy our fond memories of old C64 games, by playing them today and realising how much they really suck.

Also, I can't be bothered to check, but there's a pretty good chance that International Karate and Uridium (as well as many future C64 releases) are abandonwares, meaning that it wouldn't even be illegal to play them for free on a PC emulator.

But then again, why would you want to play those games to begin with...? It's high time scientists analysed the neurological effects of nostalgia - I am pretty sure it erodes away major brain functions such as Rational Assessment of Videogames.

If these games sell, I bet a bunch of guys at Nintendo HQ are going to piss their pants laughing.

Antiterra

@maniacmayhem: Project Firestart, OMG...that game was the first to make me piss my pants...because of the music. No sound, deathly quiet...then DUN DUN DUN DUN...oh shit, alien! Where is it? DUN DUN DUN DUN! Where is it?! (Alien appears from side of screen.) AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I never finished that game because I ran out of diapers.

Other games I spent a lot of time playing on the C64:
Airborne Ranger
Bad Blood
BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception
Champions of Krynn
Echelon
Elite
The Indiana Jones games
Karateka
The Last Ninja games
Maniac Mansion
Montezuma's Revenge
Neuromancer
Pool of Radiance
Sid Meier's Pirates!
Skate or Die
The Spy vs. Spy games
Star Control
Stellar 7
The Ultimas
Wasteland
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
...and every game ever made by Infocom that was released on the C64. Including the ones I really shouldn't have been playing at that age (Leather Goddesses of Phobos, anyone?...no ESRB back then).

Wow. Good times.

LOADING>>>

Wow. I'd pay $5 for a compilation of several C64 games, but for ONE? No way! Besides, the only way to play them properly is on an actual C64, I've tried out the emulation thing, and it's not the same. And are we supposed to play these with the Wii Remote? That's a far cry from the large brown keys of the C64 keyboard.

Ahh, back in the days when floppy disks were actually floppy...

theblogcomics

How about gearing up for the Fallout 3 release by letting us US users get a taste of Wasteland? Come on now! I'd more than willingly pay 500 points (5 bucks) for that. Dang it all....

Or Mail Order Monsters, woot! Awe man, I'm salivating thinking about such things.

They better put the Last Ninja series on there. Last Ninja II was just awesome. Can't wait to play that.

Also, to all the people saying that $5 is entirely reasonable for these, you have to be kidding. Saying every game on a platform is worth the same price is lunacy, and it's the reason why my Wii has so few VC titles on it. I buy all the AAA ones because they are a good deal, and none of the others because they are ridiculously overpriced.

Obviously they think they are making more money overall by having this pricing structure, but whoever is running their numbers is stupid. Saying Super Mario Bros. should cost the same price as Urban Champion because they're both NES games is like saying a Mercedes and a Hyundai should cost the same because they both drive on the same roads.

Nintendo is absolutely leaving money on the table with this pricing structure. By charging reasonable prices for the titles, I would very likely have bought every single title (and used my Wii a whole lot more). I think a lot of hardcore gamers feel the same way.

crackp1pe

FYI people they are upgrading the games with virtual keyboard, mapping inputs to each controller and some other tweaks.

It costs a fair amount of money for a company to do emulation and then you have legal, licensing, royalty fees.

You complainers wonder why it takes ages for an xbox live game to come out it's because it takes a lot of time and money to do so.
Also Nintendo has to make the money the license owners get be attractive. Wonder why gametap pulls games or why things are so slow to come to other services? Money is the issue.

Also people if you want impossible mission the wii game in edition to an updated remake has the original commodore 64 game on it. So does the DS version and both Wii and DS versions of the game are 19.99.

Yetanotheruninspiredscreename

One of the best games of all time was originally released on the Commodore 64: Wasteland, the predecessor to the Fallout series. Of course, that originally came with a 40 page booklet of quotes since that came from the day of gaming where you complete one task and the game would tell you "Turn to page 34, section C" to get your next clue. There was a lot of fun in going through that booklet and reading all the red herrings in it.

Aprotosis

I had no plan on EVER getting a Wii, but if they bring enough of those C64 games to the Wii (here in the US) I may have to break down and get one. OR, I could just dust off my C64 and download some of those games.

cduran

The price per byte on those games is astonishing! Not saying they're not worth it or anything (though I never had a Commodore 64... had a Vic-20 though, its retarded predecessor), just saying those games are wicked small filesize-wise.

otakucode

Absolutely no way I'd pay 500 points for a C64 game. Nintendo kinda priced themselves into a box with their absolutely rigid pricing setup. I doubt they'll start to sell games lower than 500 points, but there's no way I'd pay $5 for a C64 or 2600 or Master System game.

Nobuyuki
