TOS is probably not referring to the content of the game, but to the license agreement that developers agree to by developing XNA based games for the Xbox 360 platform.

I've worked with XNA a bit (meaning some tutorials) and while I'm not informed on the XNA Xbox 360 restrictions, my guess is that are stricter than those for Windows XNA developers (e.g. you are apparently not allowed to create games that connect to a server...damn, no online multiplayer, no free MMORPG development, figures...)

sanjiyan

@fresh1: They are going to release them. Dishwasher is not Rated M, it's Unrated.

It's been explained here:
[forums.xna.com]

Since the games are all unrated, anyone with Parental Controls won't play them (Unrated being the highest "rating").

It's also explained that as long as you don't break the Xbox Live TOS with your game, and you don't misrepresent it (ie: you warn in the game description that it contains blood/violence/suggestive themes), it's all good.

Guizzy

@Stoatboy: Thanks a ton for the informative link. I'm still left wondering though... the forum posting says that other Creator's Club members review the game for content being obedient to the services TOS... what is that TOS? Do these XNA games have to be equivalent to E-rated games? I don't believe (though I could be wrong) that I've ever seen a rating on XBLA games or anything.

If Microsoft is actually being truthful about the games only being vetted by other Creator's Club members, I suppose we'll still end up with extremely bland games (no blood, no nudity, no ideas that make you think), but we might end up with games better than existing commercial offerings and if there is a revival of, say, side-scrolling shooters, Microsoft won't make sure that only one gets through to "protect the diversity of their portfolio" like they have with the XBLA.

My big question remaining is... if they allow small teams or individuals to actually make significant money off of these games, how is PopCap and the other guys that spent 10x as much to get onto the service, had to be vetted through the Portfolio Management Comittee, etc going to react?

@whiptcracker: I think there is approximately ZERO chance that The Dishwasher would ever see the light of day. That game would be rated M (because red pixels harm children) and I don't believe that is acceptable. Maybe if the blood was removed, and there wasn't so much combat... and really the music is kind of loud... if they could make it, say, a cell-shaded platformer with elevator music then it might pass muster.

otakucode

How is posible to found comments about "Little Big Planet" in a thread about a XNA games portal?.

Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [approaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! PS3 is superior.
Yea, Litte Big Planet has a level editor. I can build one for you with XNA, If that make you happy. I must acquit!

Tei

@Athest: Don't expect much on the PC-side. If Microsoft were to put together a nice easy portal where you could register and buy games developed by people or small teams with digital delivery, they would be crucified by retailers. Microsoft products would disappear from shelves and they would cave and shut it down. Expect, at the most, a place where they feature some of the better demos of PC stuff but leave the developers to have to deal with charging for the stuff themselves which will work as well as totally indie production does now - hardly at all.

otakucode

@Code_Monkey: Peopel won't be allowed to charge for their games. If they EVER can, they will only be allowed to keep a very tiny little portion of the money, maybe 10% or something. And the games will all go through beureaucratic crap to make sure they're not "offensive" (read: interesting) or "harmful" (read: out-competes big company BS). Everything they say about the community determining the content - Microsoft will have to prove that, but it will be entirely out of character for them if they do so, and bigger publishers will complain loudly because it will do harm to their market.

To the people expecting a flood of crappy games: Feel free to stay off the service.

As some people have mentioned, Little Big Planet is really nothing more than a level builder (but awesome, don't get me wrong, it looks really sweet). As an indie developer this is really exciting - you can make anything you want for a fraction of the cost of a lot of development platforms.

In addition, if you want to try something even simpler, you can use TorqueX, which lets you piece together a game for the XNA platform with very little to no programming.

Now, as far as the toolset is concerned, if you want to program your game in XNA using Visual Studio, you can use Visual C# Express edition, which is free.

I have to say that I feel that this is a step in the right direction for Microsoft, especially considering the popularity of flash portal sites right now.

EgoAnt

Quote:
"The results were incredible - we had over 200 games from all over the world." The top 100 were great, the top 50 were excellent, the top 20 amazing. 1) How easy will be to get aprobation for you games. Microsoft can be a jerk here, and reject most games, and only allow some big people.
2) This will be free use and free games for everybody? (with a option to pay, If you wish). Microsoft as a bad record here.
3) Do XNA+Microsoft is really a good framework to make games? Indies can make good games, but maybe no under a depresing Microsoft shadow.

@Guizzy: Again, it's still easier to build something like that for the PC than any XNA...and much easier to profit from it on the PC too. Not only is the download, shopping cart, payment processing and all that readily available on the PC, the potential audience is massive. You can combine all the video game consoles in the world together and they'd still be a fraction of the PC user base. Nintendo Wii's Blue Ocean is nothing compared to the number of casual game players on the PC. XNA will be a nice novelty for existing 360 owners or people looking to get a 360 anyway. It's not going to be the reason people buy a 360. Also, with the Zune support for XNA, I wouldn't be at all surprised if XNA was integrated with the PC instead of forcing Zune owners to buy a 360 (which would only result in a flop for the intiative, if they did try to force that).

jsf49

Just to clear up some of the random comments around here... XNA is for creating games for Xbox360 and PC. XNA itself is free, including a stripped down copy of visual studio. This means you can develop and test games you want on PC all you want, at no charge.

Playing the games on your Xbox360 however needs a Creators Club Membership for $49 (4 mo.) or $99 (1 yr.). Presumably this service will also require said membership.

As mentioned above, there appears to be a Student program to get more then just XNA itself free, but I'm not clear on those details.

Rathus

LBP is akin to Halo 3's Forge.

XNA has much bigger potential and scope to it. An indie DEVELOPER (NOT Joe Dude with no programming knowledge) can program fully-featured games of retail quality, then distribute them for the 360 on the marketplace.

What this means for the 360 user is that there will soon be a massive amount of smaller, cheaper games on the Marketplace, ranging from flash-game like to fully-featured shooters, racing, strategy, adventure, RPG games...

Guizzy

It appears this needs clearing up.

LittleBigPlanet is a game that supports user generated content, but that content is limited to what the game allows. (Don't get me wrong here - I think LBP looks great)

XNA is a programming framework and development environment for developing games. If you are not a programmer you will need to learn that before you can make something with XNA.

XNA Game Studio has actually been around (for free) for several years. The big announcement at GDC is that they allowing authors to make their games available to EVERYONE (not just other developers) via Xbox Live.

As someone who tinkers with XNA, I am very excited about what this will do for the community. For example, we could see open source projects coming out that are playable on Live. Very cool stuff.

PreachingLlama

Comparing Little Big Planet to XNA is like comparing a Paint by Numbers kit to an Artist's Canvas. Both a Paint by Numbers kit and an Artist's Canvas let you paint pictures, but one is a lot freaking harder.

LBP - Has a (damn cool looking) set of tools that lets you build levels and characters within their framework.
XNA - Is a programming framework.

Both have their place, but folks going "LOL, LBP looks better!" aren't really comparing apples to oranges. Someone who is making an XNA game is basically starting from scratch compared to LBP.

Just to clear up confusion that people have:
1. These game have a time limit, they'll time out and stop working after 30 days, but your play session isn't time limited, you can play JellyCar or whatever as long as you like.
2. These games are available for ANYONE that has an xbox LIVE account.
3. To download these games, first go into marketplace and and download 'XNA Game Launcher' from Marketplace, then the XNA Creators Club tab will show up on your My Games tab, goto that tab and press Y, that'll bring you to a creators club marketplace page where you can download the games.

Code_Monkey

this has very limited appeal to the core gamers, but we are talking about the GDC, so it's cool for the occasion. I can't see this picking up too much momentum. Kind of like the linux discs for the PS2 that let you do a similar kind of thing. The only advantage is the ability to share it with otherer, but to be honest I would rather have good games handed to me on a plate than having to shift through mounds of crap before I find a gem of a game.

I think that's a bit of a narrow way to view this. Its more of a realization of what was intended when XNA was first announced years ago. LBP is just one game with level creation/distribution. This is more of a platform for games to be created and distributed by amateurs.

This is potentially one of the best things the industry has ever seen, and at a very important time. Garage studios are dying, smaller devs are being absorbed by mega-publishers and the industry is a little shaky for the next generation of devs. This is something that could ultimately help the industry as a whole, including Sony and Nintendo because these amateur devs could go on to make innovative titles whereever, not just for MS.

I hope to see positive comments from Sony and Nintendo about this initiative and hope their fans can see this too.

DARTH_TIGRIS

Hmmm, that's nothing different than what any Creator's Club member has now.

I guess it shows how the games that you do download are integrated with the "My Games" tab (something that happens with games you deploy with the XNA 2.0 drop in December already).

But it doesn't show the interface for people to browse through available games and choose the ones you want to try, etc. -- and I'm pretty sure they won't just be thrown into the professional XBLA pool.

I'm assuming non-CC members won't have the XNA Creators Club tab nor XNA Game Studio Connect.

So was the point just to show "hey here are some XNA-created games available via XBLA" or to show the future community stuff?

BigWeather
