and I've put in the most intensed scratched up discs in there.

One I've had, a UB40 CD for over 7-8 years......

and, on top of that, ripped in perfect succession and sounds nice and crisp like it's new on my PS3

disc read errors or not.
Xbox360's are faulty pieces of junk.

Seriously, MS had/has the tech to make a console in which the first time you run the disc, it loads the game onto the HDD. #1: this would block arguments in favor of 'backups', because you'd get to keep the game disc on ice whilst playing off the HDD #2: faster load times #3: no 'unreadable disc' errors, which has plagued MANY legit gamers out there.

the disc read error happens to discs which are completely fine and in pristine condition. I know, it happens to mine. The 360 is the only optical device I have ever owned which will not play a disc because it says it's "dirty." I've got 7 optical based devices in use, and the 360 will throw up this error for no disc related reason at all.

I've played old discs that have been scratched to hell on other devices and they still play. The 360 drive either has the tolerance of a an DVD drive that costs a dollar or the unit has yet another design flaw.

In this case though, we will never know if the disc was FUBAR or the 360 is just being it's old ticking bomb self.

actually i think what MS trying to do here is showing off their latest product line, we all know they have this Elite, Halo, Premium and Arcade edition, this is probably their new edition, RROD edition (a.k.a. collector edition, simply for collector only, it offer nothing about gaming, just a 360 system for display so you could say you own a pieces of gaming history) and other would be the Read Disc Error edition (offer to those who don't like any 360 game, but love the online service, simply plug in the system and you could chat online, download XBL demo, do anything that don't required a disc) they will both go on sale to the store near you really soon, suggest price is $50-100

@Heliophage: This isn't really a red ring issue, more likely its the DVD drive. Next to the RRoD this is the most common failure with a 360, their DVD drives stop reading discs eventually (at least the older models did. Newer models use better DVD drives.)

Forget about who's better, or who else also had hardware failures. Those are generally taken care of by now. This has slipped so far it's more an issue of "how is this even acceptable?"

And you know, it's even ok to have a unit (or two!) die at a trade show; it happens. But this is indicative of a much bigger problem that has gone on so long it's a farce.

Just want to say for people saying saying stuff about sony's previous machines.. I've had my ps2 7 years now i think, it's been a great games machine, cd, player and dvd player. While all other DVD players messed up after a year or two of buying, it's still going strong even today.

PSP issues.. me and my 2 brothers own a psp each and have never had any, apart from when my brother had his in his pocket, sat on it and cracked the outer shell (Not the screen the bit before you get to the screen).

Now i'm not sure what the xbox 360 is like.. as i haven't personally tried it, but it sounds to me like they aren't investing profits earned from their existing customers, into existing customers systems. One person earlier pointed it out that they should be replacing defective hardware instead of fixing it (Not the whole system, just compnents), with the newer components which everyone seems to assume break down less.

PS - Seems like that idea of enforcing a blu ray player on every ps3 system paid off in the end :).

I am an XB360 Fanboy, myself, well, kinda.. LOL

Anyways, My 360 finally bit it right after Christmas, so they sent me a box and I sent the machine in for repairs. I then get another machine (different S#) back, which was a bit dirty and sounded like something was loose inside. Ofcourse, when I plug it in and fire it up, it doesn't make it past the Xbox360 orb.. LOL.. it just loops and resets over and over. So, I had to send that system back and am still waiting for my 3rd XB360 to arrive.. LOL. I guess the good news is that it made me play my PS3 a bit more, and I am enjoying it. Although, I do still love the XB360, just don't love the crap I have had to go through to get one that works...

Anways! I guess in a nutshell, I just wish the hardware was a bit more stable. That way, we could enjoy playing the dang thing! LOL (for those that have had problems)

I used to get this error on my console, usually after about an hour or so of play. In the end it turned out to be the after-market cooler I was using (you know one of those that plugs into the power supply of the console and takes its power directly). I guess it was taking too much power and the dvd drive wasn't spinning fast enough to read from the disk, hence the error. If anyone is having the same error and has an external cooler try removing it.

Disc read errors...some of my friends have been getting a lot of those lately while playing Lost Odyssey, but I've not had the problem so far. However, just the potential fear of an RROD has been forcing me to play the game in much shorter bursts than I would like. Funny how much one stupid hardware defect effects so many people.

Either way, damaged disc or dead console, this is still bad form on Microsoft's part. They should replace the console ASAP or just put a DVD on or something. Having a corpse of a machine out on the show floor is never good business.

The DRE issues are, and always have been, more prevalent than the RROD. I don't know a single person who hasn't had issues with their DVD drive in some capacity--either a scratching disc, these DRE errors like you see in the picture above, the drive not closing properly, the 360 unit failing to recognize itself as a 360 unit ("please insert the 360 disc into a 360 console") etc.

It just doesn't get as much press, and MS refuses to acknowledge or fix it, because it doesn't actually "kill" the system. People put up with it, partly because the system still "sort of" works, but also because MS holds the threat of sending them a refurb that's going to RROD in exchange for the one they already have that at least fires up sometimes (as a couple of people in this topic have experienced firsthand).

The whole thing is ridiculous. Which is why I sued em and got all my money back. A man can only take so much.

@Dakobah: You do know that a DRE and bad drive on a 360 is not covered by the warranty. You have to pay to fix those. The warranty only covered RROD.

You might NOT be able to just wipe the disc and re-insert. didn't you know? Disc unreadable is the new RROD.

I had the 'disc unreadable' error for all my discs. I sent it back and a week later got the RROD. My friend had the same thing happen except that his only survived 3 days once he got it back from Microsoft. Needless to say we were angry. I have one friend who swears that the console update has plagued us with this laser problem - his Halo disc has given him problems since the update. My buddies in the Netherlands are having laser problems too.

Personally I feel that DREs are the beginning of a failing console. That was the way it was for me on my first 360.

Luckily my current one has not had ONE DRE since I've received it. I also bought one of those new versions of the intercooler to blow all the heat out of the console as well. I think it really helps.

MS should know better than to encase those consoles like that without some cooling methods. ESPECIALLY in the case of them having to be put on display at conventions like this. That's just being ignorant and ill prepared.

I still love my 360 though. Fabulous machine even though it has terrible cooling.

on the one side one could say those trade show consoles have to work under much higher pressure than in the usual home (like beeing on all day, no propper ventilation, overall heaty surrounding and yeah,aren´t those consoles in super tight boxes which pretty much prevents any propper air stream?)
but yeah,on the other side one would expect that with all those red ring news MS would do anything possible to avoid something like that happening at a trade show.
dunno, have the trade fair units be water cooled,have additional heat pipes in them or some other kind of internal active or passive cooling or just put a (sadly not so silent) ventialator somewhere into the demo kiosk.
next to the actual overheating issue one would also expect em to check every disc twice for scratches and make sure the console has any required software (update) propperly installed.
man, one could think such big corps would think further than average joe.

I tend to get that error when a disc's been running and not removed from the console for a while. For the most part, my fix is, to take the disc out, let the system rest, then get back to my gaming an hour or so later.

I've seen this issue on my console with clean discs and dirty discs. Taking it out and cleaning it has always fixed the problem. The problem might be with the console, but based on this one picture, it's not really possible to make any kind of judgement one way or the other.

@mooseyfate: No it doesn't mean the 360 will RROD soon. I had Dirty Disk Errors day 1 with Oblivion in 2006. They were happening all the time. ALL THE TIME. After a couple dashboard updates they got less and less. I still get them from time to time, but maybe once a month? I probably play around 3-10 hours a week.

Still going strong. I worry about the RROD and have started getting some wierd drive noises, but until it craps out I am holding onto hope.

It's a conference designed to display the system in the best light possible, and I would think it common sense to have someone roaming around to notice/take care of these things. @Moosebox: I wish I could find the article, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that MS had quoted a 16% failure rate globally. Besides that being grossly high even if it were true, I get the feeling it isn't.

The $1B in 'repairs' is a gesture to make them seem like they're doing the right thing. But when you have case after case of people who have more than one issue, on top of that report a while back regarding their atrocious QA process, it makes you wonder where that money actually went. Not to mention the fact that for all of the time they make you wait (4-6 weeks, isn't it?), the repair itself takes all of 30 minutes to perform, by some technician at a UPS warehouse, no less. The console never even makes it back to MS' hands for a thorough examination to make sure that things really are as they should be, instead of just slapping a band-aid on the unit and sending it on it's merry way (or gee, I don't know, upgrade the core hardware to your newer builds; it's far from complicated to remove a mainboard/CPU/GPU and replace them with newer, better-designed parts).

They're half-assing it because they can, and they control far too much market share to care enough to refine the process to prevent loss of their userbase.

In other news, this reminds me of the time I played Mass Effect and got the disc read error thereby losing myself an hour of playing, or the time I was playing Burnout Revenge and lost thousands of rank points after a disc read error, or the time that my whole DVD-drive scratched my COD4 disc to hell before completely failing... causing my new 360 to play random sound effects at bizarre times in online play...

Definitely getting another console at some point this year to accompany my 360, I'm not that big of a sucker for pain.

It is interesting to see MS do this to themselves though, perhaps the next Xbox system will be manufactured by a legitimate hardware company.

@Tenth: It says "Play Game" which is probably because the system couldn't read what was on the disc to determine what game was in the drive. If you notice, when you put a disc in, the system takes a few moments to update and it says "Play Game" until it knows what game is in there.

It could also just be an older firmware, from before it read that data.

I laugh how most think this is a sign of a hardware failure. Someone probably put a fingerprint on the corner of the disc and when it accessed a specific segment of the memory it recroded this error. I have encountered this error a few times with various games and cleaning the disc always resolves the problem.

What is ironic is that there is not someone correcting these issues immediately to avoid this public backlash. We have all had a CD or DVD disc-read error at one time and 99% of the time it is not the hardware's fault. Sony fanboys will love this topic but at most it is a dirty disc due to dust or fingerprints. Hardly worth the news, but funny none-the-less.

@Ignatius: Hey, my 360 was having the same problem, among others. M$ is currently screwing me, refusing to do a license transfer on my DLC to my new working console, since I just sold the old one.

As for broken demo units, I think it's only fair that M$ makes sure a certain percentage of them fail. You know, just so that the consumer can have an idea of what Xbox ownership is all about.

@LittlestLamshi: No Kotaku is quite unbiased, they just have a critical slant and Sony fanboys take that as them being anti-sony since Sony does ness up alot so the PS3 got more stick than the 360 but whe there is something to stick to the 360 (like RROD) here they are criticising it so it just shows Kotaku isn't MS biased.

The "scratched disk" error is actually an eloquent way for the console to cover for the games ass when it crashes, out of memory, or otherwise. It's a sekrit kept well by game developers everywhere!

Is there something in the DNA of large console manufacturers that comples them to repeatedly f*ck up once they start to do well? I thought Nintendo insisting of expensive cartridges and rediculous add-ons was a one-shot bad call. Then Sony did everything possible to make the first year of the PS3 a failure. Now MS finally starts to establish themselves as a/the dominant game force (in NA), and they haven't had one piece of good news since December.

Couldn't it be a scratched disc? While it's entirely possible that it's yet another dead unit, it seems just as likely that it isn't lying to you when it says the disc is unreadable.

It's only an unreadable disc, eject it and put it back in and that usually works again. I've had it say that to me when I put gears in so re-inserted the disc and it worked.
