@Avonej: Actually, there are no radio-controlled military UAVs, jet-fighters, tanks or whatever ... for one simple reason: radio-jamming. Anyone can make a powerful jammer for $100 with off-the-shelf parts. You send this radio-controlled $10 mil jetfighter on the field, and someone just rotates a knob - bam it goes into the ground. That's why the military concentrate research on AI-controlled or scripted UAVs.
Sending mind-control data... would use radio, too - same reason it's not useful.

@GOLD5: That Atari mind-link used resistance on facial muscles, no brainwaves involved. You actually had to make funny facial expressions to control with it.

This new one monitors the activity in some parts of the cortex just like speech-recognition monitors the sound pressure to detect which sounds you've made ("o", "e", "s",..). The training phase does this: tells you to think about the current action (i.e "move left"), and records the activity. Then, in-game when you think in the same way, via pattern-recognition it can be deducted which of 20 or so commands you want to input.
No-one thinks precisely in the same way. When you say "pizza" to two people, their brain-waves are usually completely different. Such a device cannot be used to record the "words" you're currently thinking.

If the brainwaves can be recorded rather clearly, then the speech-recognition advancements could be used. Though I guess there'll be some huge lag. So it'll be most useful in turn-based games.
Anyway may be the start of solving a millenia's problem of people that don't want or can't move.

I can't help but wonder if the name "Nero" came (at least in part) from the movie "Strange Days," in which Voldemort played Lenny Nero, a shady dealer of black-market mental recordings made and played using a device not unlike this one.

Of course the "Squid" was much smaller, but the similarities are there. And since Nero doesn't appear to be any kind of lame-o backronym, maybe, just maybe...

I would love to get my hands on this and mess around with the SDK.

I think that the company should hook up with a software company who will make a game tailored to the head set, but that can also be played with a controller. That way, this company will have a solid game that exploits the power of the headset and the software company will have game that is not solely dependent on the hardware to sell.

Imagine beyond gaming with this. Imagine 3D modeling by simply imagining a model, and having it built procedurally from your imagination. To a greater extent, imagine watching something happen, (i.e. a ball bouncing) and a program recreating the physics calculations automatically using the brain as a processor. Not going to happen in our lifetime probably, but the posibilities are endless. Also, remember, it's an input device, not an output device. It's not going to control your mind.

I distinctly remember seeing something similar when working at a computer store over the holidays in the mid to late 90s. I got a chance to fool around with it a bit because they had one on display. It had some kind of downhill skiing game, and no one I saw use it could make it do anything other than random movements.

Two possible situations arise from buying this product.

1: The user ends up, indeed, mapping keystrokes to thoughts. I.e. sitting around furiously thinking "WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" in order to move forwards in (insert FPS here). Wonder what'll happen if the game scares the user, too. Will you be able to map "get the hell away" to the "augh holy crap" thought?

2: The user puts on the product, turns it on, and sits still for a while. Eventually, he or she gets up, walks over to the nearest person, and says in a monotone voice: "Dude I totally just tried the best most mindblowing computer game controller ever. I want you to come try the best most mindblowing computer game controller ever on my computer." And the cycle will repeat, until the little mouse with the proportionally gigantic head eventually rules the world. Unless that damn red-nosed mouse screws up again.

I personally see a great deal of potential in it. The biggest importance of this device is getting brain-interface devices widespread access by developers, which can lead to many different possibilities. I'm confident that if enough people are looking for various patterns in terms of brain-wave recognition, we might find new forms of detection emerging, leading to more functionality than simple "keymappings" of 3-5 commands.

Just because it's cool doesn't mean it's effective, using a physical means of input is still more responsive and less expensive. And the price doesn't seem that crazy; the technology has been used before. This is just the first time (that I know of) that this is being produced for the public.

I used something like this, albeit a rather simpler looking version, at some science centre a few years ago. It was paint which you controlled with your mind. Couldn't manage much more than dots...

But, that was with 2 minutes or so. If you managed to get good with this, to the point you could move and, say, shoot, that'd be off the hook.

Maybe it would mess with your normal thoughts though?

Actually, I had a chance to try out their model from last year's GDC. They had a first-person telekinesis simulator, that responded to brainwaves. You had to toggle TK power with a button, but the magnitude of the push was related to the steadiness of the brainwave. It was cool. For a game like Force Unleashed, this could work *VERY* well.

They could easily release a demo where rocks and things just randomly levitate and most people would think they're doing it with their minds. Frankly, you'd have to have some pretty good mind-conditioning to be able to force yourself to not think about levitating a rock, just to see if it still levitates.
