If the Havok and Havok Destruction engines play nicely together (not that I know if they do), then this could make for an incredible one-two of sprites(*) where the composition doesn't just determine the weight of an object, but deformation properties as well. If I understood the Star Wars: Force Unleashed demo, they assigned individual physics engines to the different objects: DMM for environment, Havok for non-AI-controlled sprites, and Euphoria for AI-controlled sprites. Thusly, the crate you throw into the wall will deform the wall, but not the crate. If the crate can be dented, too, we have AWESOME in the making.

(*) Here I'm using "sprite" as a term for non-environmental objects, as opposed to its original, more 2D-oriented term. Or the soda.

LoopyChew

@mcderek3000: Nah. It would simply shift the costs from artists to programmers. Automated animation and procedural generation can only go so far. Procedural generation is really useful for saving disk-space though. You can actually fit a fairly nice looking FPS shooter in 128k if disk space, textures and all. Not that it's a good idea.

MadMinstrel

Havok has been simulating cloth since... I don't know... seems like forever (in non-realtime simulations). This video just proves that they got around to optimizing it enough to use in realtime. But I bet 100 galactic credits it still blows the living daylights out of the cpu, taking away precious power from more meaningful stuff, like AI. Alternatively, it might be taking away precious GPU shader power, but I don't really think so - they optimised it for the Cell's SPEs, but obviously couldn't do so for Xenon's lesser AltiVecs. That's why the PS3 is getting the better end of the deal regarding fluttering capes.

MadMinstrel

Perhaps the future of game design would be procedural generation. The computer would set up the original human model with modifications like the sliders in 'make your own character screens', automatically provide animation for human models just like the system now used by Lucasarts, support facial expressions and lip synch out immediately and even provide clothes. The roles for artists and programmers would be merely for touch-ups and personalisation for major characters. This could go some way to counter the rising costs of developing games.

mcderek3000

Meh. I'm not sure why everyone's so excited about this. The advantage here is that more games will make use of cloth physics. But it's still not particularly realistic. When he backs up or turns, the bottom of the cape should not move at the same time...it ought to come forward toward him, or wrap around his legs. I've seen enough games before that managed clothing about as well as this seems to.

It's a nice step for smaller developers, but it's hardly anything amazing.

ryusage

I'm all for it, I for one find a lot of the games in this "high-def" era to have a kind of "plastic-like" finish. I mean yeah the resolution is sharp and the games look "good". But theres something about the lighting and the way it hits character mods, and the way they are rendered that looks...well like plastic to me.

It usually has to do with organic materials (plants, grass) or cloting adn the way the light hits them.

Game models now look a lot like NBA 2k7 but in high resolution. But that's just me and I'm not an expert or anything, just my personal opinion.

But don't get it twisted I'll still play the hell out of the current games. I'm hooked man!

FunKrusher

Flowing cloth, hair, and deforming plastic and metal are a pain to deal with if you don't have a 3d Cloth plugin in most 3d animation programs. I suspect a lot of these principles apply to games (Afterall, I can use a Havok plugin in Maya)

You probably could make just as good a cape with the older iterations of Havok, but the question is this: how much time and processing power did it take to rig the cape using the older system?

Sparkamus

This video also demonstrates the effects of having a reasonably good lighting system with abysmal texturing and modeling.

Also, I was a little underwhelmed with the cape itself. It seemed at times entirely too light, and at other times too firm. It didn't, for example, behave properly when the character rotated and turned. There were also no advanced uses of the technology, such as having the character directly manipulate the cape.

Overall, an underwhelming tech demo.

Seems to me like they oughtta focus on perfecting their current tech instead of introducing new tech. Every game I've ever seen that uses Havok, particularly for death animations, is janky as shit. All those crazy bouncing bodies in Perfect Dark Zero? Havok. Twitching bodies in almost all modern FPSes? Havok. Only Half Life 2 avoids this pitfall somehow.

Zanch

The tech demo here is supposed to show HOW flowy the stuff can get with their engine, the press release even says that the people using this engine have full control over how much the cloth will flow and stuff. The fact that the cape is jumping around a lot just shows how much it can react.

Zenian

This suggests that the cape is affected by momentum, but not friction(air). I'm not saying add air physics, but it would be nice not to have my character's cape drop while I'm running over 9000Dm/h just because the cape's momentum caught up with me and it isn't affected by all that air still going by.

xnamkcor

I'm sure they can increase the cape weight, but then it would move less, and that impresses less in a tech demo.

I wanted them to make him run ultra fast and see how the cape reacts. Or fly or something. Everything they showed looked natural to me though, except for when he would turn. That seems like it's more the fault of the turning mechanism. While it's just your character model rotating, the cape seems to be taking it as a more full movement and swinging out further than it should.

Great work by them though. Should be nice now that less experienced developers will be able to more easily include realistic cloth in their games (clothing or not).

Mit

Can you clarify? They stated optimization on PS3 and 360 for the Destruction tech but when it came to their Cloth tech, they only mentioned the PS3. I can read into this in one of three ways:

A) They just assumed people know it will be available on all processors and the Cell was a special enough case they had to highlight it.

B) They don't support the optimized version, if at all, on the 360's architecture. I find this rather weird.

C) They made a mistake; it happens a lot on press releases.

Let me know what you think or find out. Thanks :)

okenny :)

That's really disappointing. If you see, the cape is vertically rigid. It's not reacting like an entity independent of the body, like it should. When he turns, it behaves like an arm on a cyclotron, instead of collapsing against itself and swinging sideways.

I would think that something backed by PhysX would be more sophisticated. What would make a really good demo is having the character turn, make a rotating motion with their arm, and get the cape to wrap around it--or use it to trap a sword or something without having clipping which is too painful..

honestly, until something like that can happen, the potential for a clothsim cape can be accomplished with much less effort.

deathbunny
