That's more what I'm thinking too. MS unvails their new " ZUNE (sidekick) vmu." Now from marketplace you can download movies/games/music & surf the net/chat all on this one device. That's a true live anywhere to me.

Developers now can use this as a new platform or tie it into their bigger 360 games with mini games that have an effect on your progress. XNA developers can now show off their games to friends and XBL becomes free but if you want XNA games I bet you pay a download fee for each game or one flat fee for the whole year.

@busboy33: Exactly. They want their market to be bland just as I said. Both to make their products from huge publishers look better and also to avoid government regulation, or even just getting bagged on for supporting freedom of speech. Microsoft certainly has never positioned itself as a company that'll stand up for the moral rightness of something like allowing such games. If it were like YouTube, you don't have to ban the really offensive stuff. You provide the community a way to give feedback, and it'll get moderated into oblivion. On the other hand, if it's very controversial but actually spurs thought it could be successful.

@kidko: It's common sense. If Company A pays $25,000 for a devkit and puts out a game that undersells College Kid X that puts out a game after a weekend of work for $5 and the Kid ends up making more bank than Company A does, Company A is going to get pissed. The truth of the matter is, there is ample room in the market for something like this to happen. Look at how many people sunk themselves into Desktop Tower Defense. Marketed correctly and priced correctly ($5 or so), something like that on a system that provides push-button ordering and digital delivery could be a goldmine... but it'd really piss off the people chucking millions of dollars into a cash inferno like Assassin's Creed.

I look at GDC and see workshops and networking for the industry, I never looked at it as an opportunity to Nintendo to announce a new Animal Crossing game unless this Animal Crossing game would have a big impact on the social networking aspect of gaming in which case developers at GDC would be interested in this announcement.

Announcing a new Jade Empire or KOTOR doesn't do anything for developers does it? It does something for gamers and GDC is not for gamers. Sure you will get good news here and there but for megatons, not at GDC (Home and LBP excluded).

Gears of War was discussed a few years ago because of what it was doing with the Unreal engine.

Don't expect big game or hardware announcements unless it's something that impacts developers on a wide range.

@Irenicus-the one and only: Yeah I know the chances are very slim. But Microsoft will not be called Microsoft anymore if this gen ends with Halo Wars being the last Halo-related game. I'm not hurried though: not even played the apparently second coming that is Halo 3 yet (tried the mp though. Good stuff as usual). Everytime I see RRoD, those 350 bucks get deeper in my pockets, and I die a little bit inside. Yesterday, Microsoft completely broke my heart with their faulty display console.

You know that Microsoft was the company that came out with motion sensing controllers back in the late 90's. The controller was the Sidewinder Freestyle pro, the only truly compatible games were flying games (either simulation or arcade style). Since no games were developed solely for the controller it was considered a flop, hence why MS said when the Wii and PS3 (the Sixaxis) came out that motion sensing was a fad and was useless in their new (at the time) console.
If they "tack on" motion sensing it will be like a lot of PS3 games that feel gimmicky with Sixaxis turned on, hence why a lot of newer games come with it defaulted to off. The only motion sensing in PS3 games that are good/decent (in my opinion) are: Resistance, Ratchet, Uncharted, NBA 2K series (you emulate a free throw shot with the Sixaxis), and somewhat Heavenly Sword. Sure in NBA 2k you don't have to emulate a free throw to use the Sixaxis shooting, you can just tilt back and forward on the controller. It would take MS a while to perfect motion sensing, heck Nintendo and their third parties on the Wii haven't fully nailed it yet.

They're going to continue with their deplorable closed model, making it as difficult as possible for single-person developers to be able to create, distribute, and get rich off of viral games. Moore made a nice speech about becoming the "Youtube of Gaming" but Microsoft has made it abundantly clear that they are interested in that not at all. They want a tightly controlled, rigidly managed experience run by a large corporation, censored all to hell and as bland as possible. They certainly don't want people creating the same kind of content as is popular on YouTube and they're going to make absolutely certain that that kind of content is blocked.

Make no mistake, Microsoft will be making sure that you only see the games they want you to see. They call it portfolio management and it's crap that makes sure you'll never see someone come up with a great game idea, develop it over a couple weeks, toss it online, and sit back to reap a mountain of profit. That's their absolute fear. They have to keep the profit generating potential in the hands of the people paying big bucks for licensing and the market bland as hell to avoid government regulation.

Sure, it is a little off topic, but honestly I wish they would handle this better than they have. The post earlier where a demo 360 RRoD'd just highlights how bad the whole thing really is.
