I'll cut him some slack: If I can make my smart Spore Monsters plant a seed and then go somewhere else and come back and the tree has grown and aged and been effected by wind and storms and such in real time, I'll disregard any features announced in the game that weren't delivered.

Codexx

After Black & White 1 I stopped believing him. Like he'd said before about Populous, he's a great designer, but a bad programmer. He comes up with ideas that would make a truly great game, which are also absent in the final version of his games. If he could do everything he wanted, it would be perfect. I think he needs a really good project manager/systems analyst to take all of his specs at the start, then lock him in a room where he can't add to it, and plan the whole thing out, do it, and not release it until it's done. That way we could end up with... something along the lines of all the things Spore has been promising.

@-MoarPlz-:
I had a tiger when I played. I heard they were the stupid hard to train ones, but I had mine trained very well pretty quickly. He'd fish for the villagers, used to steal toys from the creche, but I took care of that, and I even caught him running laps around the island carrying a boulder a few times presumably for exercise!

...and then every half dozen times or so I started the game, he would completely reset and forgot everything, so I stopped playing. That game had lots of potential, but if they ever patched it up, I'd left by then. :/

fuchikoma

@kyosen: Yeah, maybe... but it's revolutionary in a way that I could care less about.

I don't need a billion unique NPC models... I just need unique ones for the characters I have to interact with to progress.

Though, I mean I love the idea of a TON of NPCs on screen... actually, Dead-Rising is still the only game that I think has done something that couldn't been toned-down for last-gens system.. meaning it was more than taking last-gen's game and making it HD. But they didn't have unique models... but it was still as good as it would have been had they all be original looking zombies. But who cares?!?!

I mean, play Shenmue... all the characters are unique... but would you really care, or even notice, really, if every 6th or 7th person looked like one you had already seen? Or if they just swapped textures/palettes?

And seriously since Fable (and esp with all of his Fable 2 interviews) I have lost much respect for Molyneux. I mean, during early stages of Fable the ideas he was presenting were good... they excited me. But everything I've heard about Fable 2... the stuff he seems to be focusing on... sounds awful. Like stuff that has no business being in a game. Or at least has no business getting as much attention as it is.... like the Dog, or trying to get the player to feel "Love"...

"Love"? Seriously? WTF Peter. Are you single-handedly going to rid the world of loneliness because people actually feel LOVE for an NPC? It's just retarded...

RemyDuvalle

@SorenKier: If he were to make Syndicate 3 or a new Populous then yes, the amount of unrequited unconditional love poured over Molyneux would be justified.

Since his revolution will probably center around Fable 2 (Ok, I liked Fable but it wasn't worth the hype) or some continuation of B&W I simply fear for our souls.

@SpiralJacobs: That brings a good point, you can be a genius but you are only as good as the people you work with. Bullfrog had some really talented staff in their ranks, that makes it a lot easier for Molyneux to shine.

Peter Molyneux has some fantastic ideas, but the problem is he feels the need to shoehorn those ideas into a traditional "game" concept. Black and White fell apart because of the level and story progression. The Movies sucked because you had to jump through many hoops in order to actually make movies. His vision for Fable had to be sacrificed to make it work as an action-RPG.

Perhaps Mr. Molyneux should take a page from Will Wright's playbook and start making software "toys" for us. Black and White would have been so much better if it were just you, your creature, and your villagers playing around and seeing what happens. The Movies would have rocked if you could have just jumped in, picked your sets, set up your actors, and start creating without limitations. Fable turned out pretty good, but the original vision would have been served better if the story was de-emphasized and the player was plopped into a dynamic world with random threats popping up all over the place -- like GTA, except you're a good guy.

ArmiMaan

Peter at Bullfrog was a genius. Nothing can taint the legacy of Populous, Powermonger, Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper, and Magic Carpet. Brilliant, all. His post-Bullfrog years, though, have been atrocious. Black and White sucked hard and was completely broken. Fable was a simple hack and slash with some nice atmosphere that was criminally short and had a ridiculously simple "choice," implementation.

I want to believe Peter, I really do - I used to worship him as a god - but his track record has been terrible as of late.

SpiralJacobs

Lionhead really needs to get Molyneux to shut the hell up for a change. Thanks to his talk, he managed to turn the first Fable into just an average game. Had he just let the game developed, it would've been considered awesome when it was released. When it failed to live up to the promises and hype that he was saying, it left a sour taste in a lot of gamers' mouths.

NoFunShogun

Peter (In the voice of John Malkovich): My next game will allow players to look directly into the eye of God herself. To hear the movement of the universe, the click of divine cogs as they move fate into motion. My new game in fact advances evolution, allowing all humanity to become pure energy, eternal and pure, with knowledge and hope beyond the corporeal. My next game is the only truth this world will need, ushering us onto the pantheon of mystical enlightenment, and beyond to an earthly realm that is heaven itself incarnate for us all.

Why is there so much Molyneux hate? I mean honestly, put him next to Cliffy B or David Jaffe, and the guy's just a dreamer who has high hopes for his games. Is that really so bad?

I'd rather have a guy who talks about landing in the stars then someone who says, "you need a hype machine to sell games," or, "anyone who disagrees with me is a pathetic internet closet case."

Maybe Fable 2 won't be brilliant or insanely high tech, but in the end, is it so bad for him to be reaching for that? He's never managed to piss me off as much as he does the bulk of Kotaku commenters, apparently.

Garro

B&W was the biggest pile of doo doo. Sorry I had to just let that out. I remember everyone who played it at the time saying how fantastic it was and I felt like the only one that disagreed. It's nice to hear that now over the course of time I wasn't mad.

Fable I thought was completely average and not the game that was promised. Before all that I have mucho respect for Molyneux.

When he talks about AI I don't believe him. As none of his games have had more than anything that classes as standard game AI.

I await with caution to see if he can rekindle the old Molyneux Magic...

...but then again maybe he should just create a game marketing company instead of developer these days...

TurtleSoup

'if you could think back to just one thing that was cool about Black and White, it was the gesture based spell casting, physics, and fun terrain--and *not* the idiotic completely unpredictable 'learning' creature, which, often as not, would eat it's own poop, poop on a village, eat a villager, and then set itself on fire, cry, and pass out at your citadel, as it would do anything useful... my *favorite* part of that project was the look on player's faces when they finally realized that punishing or rewarding the creature only worked *while* they were doing something, and if they did it immediately after, they'd be punishing the creature for thoughts that were completely unrelated!

... Now... just imagine billions of the creature experience, *no* gesture controls, and instead of physics, it's basically world of warcraft.'

deathbunny

I'm pretty sure he's talking about Dimitri, which, if I understand it correctly, is his pet project regarding believable emotional AI in games. If it all works (a pretty big if, I know) it should be a huge leap forward for AI, so he might just have reason to crow this time...

Let's hope so anyway.

P.S. Can it stop being fashionable to bash P.M. now? As far as I'm aware, he did a great job at Bullfrog, got a little carried away with his first couple of projects with his own company (Black & White and Fable), and had to release B&W2 and The Movies way before he was happy with them because EA wouldn't give them any more money. Now he's on Microsoft's payroll, can we give him one more chance? If Fable 2 sucks, you can go right back to ridiculing him, but for now can we give him the benefit of the doubt?

hinges
