Why? I didn't buy my 360 to play HDDVDs. It's not like the games are printed on the format or anything.

The HDDVD format going under hardly impacts the console itself. The player was completely stand alone.

i do feel the sting of how unfortunate this is for people who were attempting to support the hd-dvd movement, but i think we all can sort of REALIZE that its better for the market for one format to be accepted.

...really, its the same for games, imo.. but regardless, im glad that we should be able to buy all our movies on one format.. thats really ideal for consumers.

any idea why this business plan doesn't work for games? i would seriously rather have slower technical improvements if it meant i could play all the good games coming out.. and that companies could focus on just making ONE good game, rather than a good game for 11 different consoles.

...microsoft sony nintendo and every other company interested ought to just work out the details between them, and come up with a unified format...

I'm playing Lost Odyssey right now, and it's sure as hell not on par with a FF game. Just on the 360 alone i'd say Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata were superior efforts. LO has it's moments but overall the game feels dialed in. The visuals are eratic, the game design is a mess, the difficulty level is all over the chart, has a distinct lack of background music 50% of the time, and the game is down right annoying as piss to play at times. That said the story is intriguing, and i'm still pushing through the game.

So far LO feels like a run of the mill average Japanese PS2 RPG from 2004 with nice and shiny graphics.

Anyhoo......both formats IMO are this generation's LASERDISC......really meant for AV Afficionados and film buffs more than the average consumer.

The average person could care less about either format and the image improvement over an upconverted DVD (especially the price of a BR Disc) is negligible to them.

I'm on board with you for this one. It promotes consumer ignorance. My old Toshiba CRT isn't "low-def," it's 480i. That shiny new Samsung at Future Shop isn't "true HD," it's just fucking 1080p. For chrissakes, even now, you can buy a TV with twice that resolution.

I use my HDDVD player 360 add-on as a bookend for my Blu-Ray movies. It's not completely useless.

Honestly, I thought HD-DVD was the better format. It was cheaper to make, had the interactive HDi shit going for it, and a lot of other stuff. But when more movie studios supported Blu Ray rather than HD-DVD, I knew that the decision was already made, no matter what the merits of either format were. It was just a matter of time before people realized that Blu Ray was always going to outsell HD-DVD; they had plenty of sales data to prove it. First blockbuster said they were going blu ray, warner bros. threw the haymaker, and wal-mart/netflix/best buy finished them off. HD-DVD was doomed as soon as the movie studios made their decisions.

Open your eyes. The best games are on the Xbox 360. And SHOCK, they aren't all shooters!!! But whatever. Im sure you're loving owning a system that is a year away from having a decent game library. Bet youre glad you paid $600 for your console for future games, and it must have really burned when you saw the console at $300. That explains why you keep trying to burn people who backed HD DVD. Which just makes you look dumber, because besides 7.1 audio (which I know 0 people who own a system that can do that) and extra DVD content in HD (which nearly no one watches anyway) there is nothing the Blu Ray has that makes it worth buying. HD DVD at least has online features!

anyways, i own a ps3 not an xbox 360.
xbox 360 won't suffer in sales.
ps3 will only get better cause of it's ability to play both games and play blu ray movies.
microsoft can still release blu ray add-on.

hate to admit it but they were smart in not integrating hd dvd into xbox 360.
ps3 took a risk with integrating blu ray but benefitted.

though i feel sorry for those who bought the hd dvd add on. but hey, a movie in hd is still a movie in hd. looks like you'll have to buy a blu ray player to play future movies.

but no sense in letting an hd player go to waste.
can't wait for toshiba's announcement.

Oh, and 108. Lost Odyssey 10000 times better then the nest Final Fantasy. But hey, you keep owning your PS3 for Final Fantasy, which sucks since Hironobu Sakaguchi is the master mind of Final Fantasy, and he is not working on the lastest one because he was too busy making the greatest Japanese RPG since FF7.

Not to mention the Xbox 360 has the best game library, and will continue to have the greatest game library. You have Metal Gear Solid? HA! Ninja Gaiden > Metal Gear any day.

Blu Ray could very well go up against DVD if the backers wanted it to. They could drop the price of blu ray to go straight up against DVD but like I said two formats in this case will be ok because people will know the distinction between them. If they want the movie in HD then they will go for Blu Ray, if they don't then they will go for DVD.

Saying hd-dvd is like saying... super turbo dvd. Like it is some special edition thing and not a new format, I feel the same about my hd-tv, but you can make a case about Blu ray not making sense to consumers, cd, dvd, vhs and hd-dvd all sound more like a format.

Although I agree with you, HD-DVD dieing won't hurt the 360, the "forcing" Blu-Ray argument is silly. Sony didn't force anything on anyone. They included BD tech in the PS3, which turned out to be a huge benefit to PS3 owners.

If you didn't want Blu-Ray, you didn't buy it. Considering both 360 and PS3 are the same price now, and one has Blu-Ray, that BD drive is pretty much a bonus. If you don't watch BD movies, don't use it.

Can it beat dvd all time? Most likely not. As long as it drives down prices for my dvd bargains I'm happy :)

But I don't think anyone will beat the ps2 lifetime for a very, very long time. DS has the best chance though, but they will need a revision to make it I think.

Blu Ray doesn't necessarily have to beat DVD. They can coexist as two choices. Not everyone owns a HDTV so there is a still a place for DVD. I expect a slow drop of DVD sales over the years as HDTV sales continue to grow and maybe eventually DVD will finally die off.
