I know no one is paying any more attention to this article, but I assumed that it was named after BC as a nod to breaking the Gerstmann story. Since the game is about journalistic ethics, and is a video game, it all seems to tie together nicely.

I'm actually writing my own article about it (which is why I'm reading comments to a two-month old article).

Sounds awesome. my dream is to become a video game journalist some day although it would be nice to have something to help warm up for the experience. I doubt the game covers EVERYTHING about the field but it still sounds like a valuable tool for people like me.
I hope this somehow becomes available to the public because I'd certainly pay money for it.

Funny that you ask this on one of many articles about the goings on at the GDC, where several Kotaku writers are right now. If you don't call that reporting or journalism, then I don't know what to say.

I just think its crazy about the classes and the presentation being based on BC, but I think even Crecente is amazed at that though.

It is one thing for him to be humble; entirely another to doubt his journalistic abilities.

Sigh, either you accept some bloggers are journalists or you don't. Either way, I'm tired of rehashing the same argument. Peace.

@doubtful: What journalism actually goes on here. I enjoy Kotaku, that is why I comeback. I love that the editors and contributors aren't snobs and in love with themselves. Honestly though, a great deal of the news articles on here are from other sites, and personally while I enjoy the features or the occasional first reporting of events, I think the site just like the extremely popular Drudgereport, which I find the non-video game equivalent of Kotaku,is lite on actual journalsim or lacks it enough that it is not suitable for a teaching tool to students or to make anyone here an authority on what comprises good journalism.

That being said again, I have no problem with any of the people who run this site at all, I just think its crazy about the classes and the presentation being based on BC, but I think even Crecente is amazed at that though.

I only said that quality is not a prerequisite for quantity and vice versa. How many video games with Disney characters sell really well? How many times are those sales indicative of overall quality?

That's awesome ... being a journalism grad myself, I think role-play stuff like that would have been insanely beneficial. Heck, just getting the process down of properly covering a story is hard enough when you're just getting started. I think it's a pretty cool training tool.

Hey, Crecente ... you should buy into this! You could have one of those TV infomercials, "Become an award winning journalist in just 5 easy steps with ... the Crecente Journalism Computer Correspondence Course."

You could even get accredited in some third world country to make it seem official. :)

Being a good journalist does not hinge on the magnitude of the story. It has to do with honesty, consistency, and the drive to inform people.

I think BC has done that consistently. Not to mention he has the credentials and history to back it up.

I take offense to people like HurricaneDave questioning BC's journalist cred when, as most long term readers would likely agree, BC has been nothing if not a stalwart reporter on topics we like to read about.

So, no, my logic doesn't allow a journalist to claim unearned integrity; my logic says a journalist can be a model to aspiring journalists no matter what subject matter they choose to write about, video games, morning bowel movements, or presidential elections.

Honestly, if you enjoy reading about video games, but don't value the quality which Crecente, Ashcraft, and the rest of Kotaku bring to the table, then why the fuck are you here?

As a student of such a course it does sounds like fun, something different at the very least. It's nice that they're trying to introduce PR into the game with the mod, but at the end of the day I can't see it being a legitimate substitute to going outside with a pen and notebook.
Then again, as part of an introduction to a course the idea sounds very good, you don't want uninformed students running around asking inappropriate questions.

I was looking at the GDC website and reading the things that were going on and I seen that "Being Brian Crecente" event and was thinking, I wonder if it's the same Crecente from Kotaku. I guess in hindsight it was kind of dumb for me to think that it wasn't, haha.
