That's exactly what I did.

My Ps2 died and I reaaally didn't want to spend $140 or whatever on a ps2 when I could put that money towards a ps3 (I'd just got Okami and FFXII!) so I just went ahead and got a 20gb off ebay.

(It was a steal to be honest. I got that + Resistance + armored core 4 and a really nice HDMI cable for $400, and this was about 10 months ago).

I really do think BC is a pretty big issue for most people. everyone I know that is talking about getting one say that they are gonna hit ebay for a BC model.

Also, I want another HDTV but a smaller one, and so far the options for sets in the 1080p/under 40 inch range I've seen are not just extremely limited but at least $1400, since I spend over 50% of the time I watch the TV playing games I need a set in that range that I know can fully handle the load.

Different writers have their personal favorites, but on the whole it mostly equals out. Part of the reason why I said the bit about you being new is that with the exception of somewhat recently Sony has been the whipping boy of sorts. (And let's be honest, they deserved it for some things...) At the same time the other companies got called on their issues too between MS's completely botched hardware and Nintendo's complete lack of any games that are substantive. It's not so much that Sony is suddenly Kotaku's darling, but rather that it's not nearly as negative since the public's perceptions have warmed up to the previously-expensive black monolith.

I suppose the best way to put it is this... Kotaku is a professional blog, they dish against and shower praise upon all the consoles at one point or another. Inflamitory writing gets people such as yourself to express their opinions which in turn gets other peoples to read, and express their own. It's in their best interest to write stories with a jab, but there is only so much they can get away with without alienating their audience... since I'm pretty sure that Sony Defence Force has the market cornered on PS3 zealots.

I'm sure if you stick around (and I hope you do) you'll see what I mean and realize that it's a rather balanced site on the whole.

My personal prediction is unless MS does something big and soon then the PS3 will pass the 360 worldwide after next xmas. @baked ham: I bet they can, but I think they won't. My bet is, cut expenses even further, keep same price and make more profit and with the psp and ps2 they might get on the whole plus side of things again. They need to release some big profits, and if they do which I think they can then they can make a price drop in 2009 still making profit on each console sold instead of breaking even as they are claimed to do now or take a loss by making price cuts or keeping status quoe.

Even in that article there is slanted writing. The writer talks about how there are many people not subscribing to gold accounts, while this article only talks about the positives. I love this site but I may avoid some writers now if I see them as largely biased towards any one console. If I wanted to turn this figure in a negative I could say something like "how many buy them simply because of the movie player inside", and show figures of games sold on the 360 over the PS3. I am going to pay closer attention to single writers on the site and judge them for myself. Because while I think its pretty hard to make a coherent argument, given all the facts, that importing is in any way immoral, it is of questionable legality due to the laws in several countries that give corporations like Sony protection from piracy and such. Just like recent amendments to U.S. copyright laws that have allowed corporations like Disney to extend the copyrights on their classic characters, I'm sure these laws came into being on the word processors of industry lobbyists, as they certainly don't serve consumers.

There is of course far more detail and complexity to it than that, but yeah, Lik-Sang was kind of playing with fire for a long time, I'm surprised it took as long as it did.

It's like if ... uh ... just as an obscure musical example -- say, A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde both have new albums coming out on the same day as a Kanye West. They're all in the same relative industry (hip-hop, you could call it), Kanye isn't competing just for that market, he's got a more mainstream reach. Tribe & Pharcyde are more niche, and they'll have a good fight between them for that more core hip-hop dollar, while Kanye is just out there in a league of his own with his pop stylings.

I hope that comparison makes a bit of sense when talking about how this is really a fight between Sony & Microsoft, and Nintendo aren't competing for the same audience. They're competing for a more vast audience, it seems. Nintendo's competition is the mindset and wallet of their potential customers. Their battle is getting non-traditional gamers to buy their games. 360 and PS3 are battling against each other for the core, traditional gamer, more or less. It's interesting how Nintendo get's left out of their fight, because for one thing, it's seen as the standard "second console" for someone who's bought either a PS3 or a 360. If everyone who bought a PS3 or a 360 got a Wii, then obviously the Wii would have the most sales, but it hasn't won by competing with those products. It, more or less, hasn't won any fight. It's just been successful, which is kind of all together something different.

That's just how I see it.

I'm tired as sin, and I have no idea if any of that made any sense.

Selling the old system for money is a valid point, and so is Witzbold's point about PS2's dying, but the common argument of saving space in an entertainment center just doesn't fly with me. First off, never buy an entertainment center cabinet. There's just no point to them. All they do is clutter up the room and make it difficult to adjust cables. My "entertainment center" is just 5 wooden shelves mounted to the wall by two adjustable metal runners. It holds a 32' tv, a Wii, a 360, a cube, an N64, a PS2, and a SNES on occasion, and that's just the bottom 2 shelves. Above that is my entire game library, a bunch of books, and PC and Console boxes on the very top. Also, everything has plenty of room to breath (although I do like to keep my 360 on the floor, just 'cause I want it to get as much air as physically possible).

Yeah, the gap is pathetic, especially now that the Wii has passed it by several millions. Maybe a headstart plus RROD was not the best way to go? Because it seems 360 sales are going down, not up just down. I know for a fact RROD is hurting them a ton over here, try to find 1 game store without a sales clerk pointing out the RROD problem, or a costumer that just happens to get rrod while you are in the shop or the display cases blinking "red". It is starting to bite them in the rear, and it would not surprise me if Sony doesn't get some consumers based on that fact alone. I know friends who "moved" based solely on rrod.

1) Negative press for about the first 9-12 months of the release. $600!?!?! OH NOES!!!.

2) Competition against the 360. The 360 was the only console on the market as it was getting to 10M+. The PS3 was fighting a 360 with some momentum at the time.

Things are changing for the PS3. Blu-ray won the format war, The priced dropped to 360 levels, and you get a better quality product for the same money. People are also looking forward to some nice PS3 exclusives for this year.

Am I a Sony fan? Not really. But I do like to have a system that doesn't break, and games that don't involve Nintendo franchise characters in various minigames.

I'm torn on how much the BC matters to me, because while I acknowledge that the PS2 had and has great games the only game that I still have for it that gets regular play (like at least once a week) is Katamari, because the Xbox version was unsatisfying in the extreme, down to the controls were even slightly inferior IMO. Other than that, the vast majority of the best PS2 games are either getting PS3/360 sequels, Wii ports, or both, so yeah I'm not sure it means that much, to me personally. If I was hugely into RPGs like my siblings, it would matter much more ;)

I don't think "average" consumers will assume that PS3s play PS2 games, honestly, they've been conditioned to assume the worst in terms of add-ons, media, etc in all their electronics, standards seeming to shift before they leave the store in some cases. When I worked at a game/cds/movie retailer and we started taking PS3 preorders (this was early 2005!), the first question people usually asked me was "does it play the old games?" in a suspicious tone. Remember before the PS2 BC was not very common in consoles, all Nintendo had to do with the SNES was give it a modular cartridge slot to play NES games and they still brazenly decided not to do so. Technically the Genesis had it way before that, but it required a pretty expensive add-on, it wasn't built in.

The whole BC issue is really just kind of sticky. Is it a good feature? Yes, undoubtedly. Does it make or break the system? At first it can. Early on, when there's not a ton to play on the next gen system, having BC to be able to fill in the gaps with games that are still released or good classics you really like to play a lot. In the system's infancy, it's definitely a good feature. As time passes? Well, after a year or two, your system should have enough games on it to warrant playing it's experiences. Even when there's dry times on the system and good games aren't rolling out, the networking features on this generation's consoles have provided cheaper forms of entertainment. (PSN titles, VC classics, XBLA remakes and updates.) It's still a feature I'd love to have whenever I can afford to really get into gaming again, but it's not a huge deal breaker if I can't play games on it I'd have a hard time finding nowadays anyway. I mean, games on older systems can be hard to find if they were good games to begin with, it might actually be more a hassle to chase down those games I missed the first time than worrying about the BC in the first place.

Like DonWii said, you have that a bit confused. There is currently no way for SONY to know how many units retailers have sold without using third pary tracking companies (NPD MediaCreate, etc.). However, those tracking companies can only gather a "best guess" (NPD doens't have access to Wal-Mart sales or Toys R Us sales).

SONY used to report on units leaving the manufacturing plant and shipped to warehouses. Now, like everyone else, they report sold to retailers. Remember when MSFT flooded the retail market with consoles to fake their 10 million mark?

Those are the numbers we get.

I already have a Wii and since 99% of the games I want for the X-Box 360 and PS3 are multi-platform I will get the PS3 because of FF13, FFvs13 and MGS4 also, seems to fit me. PS3 I think will overtake the X-Box 360 this year as I see it. Since the only place the 360 sells seems to be in the US (plus I can play a bunch of Japanese Games on the PS3 since I like alot of those games)

I don't think it's unreasonable to say they will probably finish as the worldwide #2. They outsell the 360 in Europe and I don't even need to mention Japan. I doubt they'll pass the 360 in America but it's still a reasonable performance considering the massive implosion that was predicted before the launch.
