But above all else, when you go on Fox and make outrageous claims about games and school shootings "for our children" we hate you.
Come on, Jack. There is no evidence of violent videogames altering any child or teen's personality or actions, and not a single study has proved games make someone more likely to commit a crime later in life. All studies so far have showed a temporary change in brain activity while playing. Not a single one has actually said anything to the effect of "you are more likely to copycat the behaviors in the games." Not even in the Harvard study. You can't say whatever you want and reply with to us with the equivalent of "science sez lol." Nobody says something crazy unless you're unmedicated or Jack Thompson. We need to correct this:
Get out of your computer chair. Don't keep reading, do it. Are you there? Good. Take off your pants and squat. Ready? Great. Now unclench your anus and let the pole drop. We know, Janet Reno went out of line putting it there, but you have to let it go. You have got parody songs about you, shirts reading "I hate Jack Thompson," and more hate speech directed toward you than blacks, gays, Jews, and Muslims combined (and we all know your stance on that last group). You are both the bane and laughingstock of the world of gaming.
You need to stop sitting at home, using one hand on speed-dial for Rockstar, the other to Google yourself. You shouldn't model yourself after John Lofton and David Grossman. You must know of the ridiculous arguments posed by creationists recently in Orlando, including a man who compared Darwin to Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Tse-tung, one who said it sanctioned murder, and a man who said evolution provided him with absolute proof that his orange was the first cousin to somebody's pet cat" and "related to human beings." Don't be like Joe Yahoo, GED. Don't be another crazy Floridian. Make a real argument. Discuss this with us. Please. Yes, I'm sure there will be some people who will be immature and ignorant, but many of us would like to have a civilized discussion with you. Just be a decent person and show us you care about the opinions of someone besides high school graduate housewives spending their days watching Regis.

Last week a young man killed and maimed students at Northern Illinois University. The next day the Fox News Channel asked me to tell the national audience why these school massacres were occurring with increasing frequency. I noted that the two worst school massacres in world history-at Virginia Tech and in Erfurt, Germany-were authored by students who rehearsed their killing on the popular on-line killing game, Counter-Strike.

The next day, the New York Post reported that the NIU killer did in fact rehearse for his school massacre on Counter-Strike. In spite of national news coverage of the link between this murder simulation game and school massacres, Wal-Mart continues to sell Counter-Strike in its retail stores and also to anyone of any age on-line at www.walmart.com, with no age verification whatsoever. I would think that the lessons of the Jonesboro, Arkansas, school massacre would have been learned by an Arkansas-headquartered retailer.

I have confirmed that Wal-Mart is still selling Counter-Strike at its Supercenter, Store #786 in Dekalb, Illinois-the very town in which Northern Illinois University is located!

Please inform me by five o'clock p.m. this day that Wal-Mart has issued a directive to stop selling Counter-Strike. I shall proceed appropriately if Wal-Mart does not do the responsible thing by that time today and stop selling this school massacre simulator.

I agree with you. Violent video games, as a form of violent imagery, can increase the likelihood of violent crime. As to what degree, as to how influential violent video games are, I think it is very slight.

And as to what degree video games are responsible for violent crime, I would say absolutely zero. The responsibility of violent criminals lies within themselves and themselves only. Sure, it sucks, when something like Columbine or Virginia Tech happens, and the gunman kills themselves when it's over. Something horrible happened, and there's no one left alive to pin the blame on. That's the end of it. The only thing after that are tears and "what-ifs" and "whys".

Your questions of "why" and "how do we stop this" has led you to an easy target, video games. It seems that many of these troubled individuals have spent more than an hour or two playing shooters, and have spent much of their solitary time killing virtual people, seemingly "practicing" their future rampages. Makes some sense, I'll give you that. But in nearly all the violent-rampage cases I've heard of, these individuals were mentally unstable. They had "issues" from long ago. Video games may have been an element of their lives, but I imagine, a far less influential element than their own demons.

As it turns out, video games, both violent and non-violent are immensely popular these days. Many ordinary people enjoy playing them. An overwhelming majority of these individuals, myself included, are non-violent. We can all testify to games' ineffectiveness at influencing our behavior. We lead normal lives, without the urge to harm others. Video games are not the culprit. Your crusade against them will be met with massive opposition at every step by the legions of games industry professionals, gamers, and constitutional lawyers who support these games, and the freedom to make them.

The more significant issue is one that is not popular with many in this country - where did these people get their weapons? Killing a man is supposed to be the sort of thing which is difficult to do. A gun makes it remarkably easy. With a simple handgun, an untrained person has the power over the lives of the people in front of him. Whether they live or die is determined merely by the motor neurons of the gun owner's right index finger. I'm not comfortable with matters of life and death being determined by factors so miniscule.

This is Kotaku. It's a weblog for gamers, by gamers. As you may have noticed, many of us don't like you. None of have met you, heck, you may be a really nice guy. But we think you're barking up the wrong tree. Video games constitute a form of art, and expression. The First Amendment grants us the freedom to do this. The Second Amendment grants us the right to own guns, regardless of our qualifiacations or mental competency.

Would you do us a favor, and consider fighting the undue freedoms granted by the Second Amendment, before you waste your life attacking that which is protected by the First?

Jackson to Debate]]> Seriously, I know that Thompson's all ready to get this mad debate on, but posting his number and email on a press release that was sent to one of them there websites that gets quite a lot of daily traffic was a very stupid move.
I just think it's crap that whenever there's some sort of 'incident' involving youth and violence that it is automatically some sort of problem with the mass media, like video games, music, or movies, etc. because we all know that people are level-headed enough to decide which is real, images on screen or real life.
If you're going to be so easily persuaded to reenact what you see on a game, then yes you shouldn't be playing the games. But just because the one guy does something stupid shouldn't be a reason to ruin it for the other 100,000+ consumers that saw the movie/played the game/listened to the music.
The only thing we really can do is make sure that we aren't the ones that are ending up on the news by not using our God-given intelligence to tell real and make-believe apart.
Finally, I thoroughly enjoy "counterstrike half life" and though it makes me mad sometimes, I have the common sense not to take it out on other people.
