@SnakeCL: Cost of Blu-Ray manufacturing may have come down. I hadn't seen anything about it. It seems Sony has been really vague and secretive about cost. They developed a new ink to help bring cost more in line with HD. But, if the cost has come down to HD cost, why are movies listed at $40. Toshiba said from the very beginning that HD was only a dollar more per disc than DVD. There has never been a reason for either format to be priced so high. As for 300, it's $30 on Blu-ray and $25 on DVD, but I've been buying DVD for 10 years and have noticed how much the prices suddenly spiked before the release of HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Look at American Gangster, it's $16 on DVD and $30 on HD DVD. And the $30 is $10 off. For something that cost a dollar more to make, why are they asking for $14 more. The sudden jump from $20 to $25 as the retail for DVDs was just the grease people needed to except the high prices they planned to charge for HD videos. Sony's pitching, but I don't play catcher.

Dcbronco

@dip: It's up to you really how many times you want to re-download something. But the option should be there for you, in case you ever feel like watching it again. I see this argument often, that people want to have a physical disc over digital file. I sure as heck would want something physical if I payed $20 for it. But that's assuming a digital file would have the same price tag. Which it wont, if they want to start competing with the illegal distribution. And they will have to compete because it's way past lawsuits at this point.

zlimness

Having owned a 360 since it's release, I was never quite sold on the HD-DVD add-on. And when I got my PS3 last January, I had the bonus of becoming an owner of a Blu-Ray player, although it would be months before I purchased my first Blu-Ray movie.

I sat on the fence for most of last year, and tried to wait as long as possible before deciding which new film format to go with. And during the summer I made the decision to go with Blu-Ray. Having a PS3 was a huge factor, but the reasons ended up being the inclusion of "Hard Boiled" in the LE of "Stranglehold" for the PS3. The long, and numerous, delays almost got me to cancel my pre-order. But after deciding on getting "Stranglehold" w/ "Hard Boiled", I bought a copy of "300" in Blu-Ray. And when NetFlix began to offer Blu-Ray or HD-DVD versions, I picked Blu-Ray with confidence.

And ever since last summer the outlook for HD-DVD started to get bleaker and bleaker. First Blockbuster, then NetFlix, and now Wal-Mart have all made the final decision to commit to Blu-Ray. And now we hear that Toshiba is going to cut it's losses and throw in the towel pretty much mean that HD-DVD is now going to be included with Betamax on the list of "could-have-beens".

On one hand I'm glad the format war is close to being over. But another part of me wonders what MS is going to do to try to recoup it's massive investment in HD-DVD. By making the HD-DVD player an optional add-on, they definitely considered the very real possibility of Blu-Ray becoming the dominant format. But what about the 360 owners that bought one? What kind of support, if any, can they expect from MS in the future. MS turned it's back on the original XBox when the 360 came out, showing a reluctance to devote time and energy in a product they no longer have any plans for. I assume they will do the same with HD-DVD.

coalhalo

@DelSource: Amen. What I find really laughable are those who've quickly done the about face from "HD-DVD is the more consumer friendly format" to "Digital distribution is poised to topple physical media".

In five to ten years time I'm sure that second statement will be true. But anyone who seriously believes that the market, either consumers or distributers, are actually ready for such a major leap are either talking out of spite for Blu-Ray or morons...or both.

There may be something of a direct-to-consumer infrastructure already in place...though even there you're still talking about hundreds of thousands of people who still don't have convenient (or any) high speed internet access. But there is absolutely no retail infrastructure in place. Christ, Nintendo can't even manage to get its shit together with something as bush-league as DS download stations and PC addled morons are seriously expecting a nation-wide retail distribution system to set itself up over night?

Get serious. Even if the dynasty of Blu-Ray is half that of DVD, it's still here to stay for the foreseeable future. Because it's going to be a good long while before agreements have been made, copy protection has been settled, players have been produced and marketed...etc, etc...

Does anyone seriously expect a market where any corner store can sell DVDs without a contractual agreement is suddenly going to do a 180º and switch to a set-up where only Wal-Mart, Target, and a handful of other national retailers are even allowed to sell digitally distributed media?

Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic

Most of the points you make were made previously by people who objected to DVD and who then suddenly went quiet and quickly replaced their magnetic tape collections when the were proven to be backward-looking morons. Do what you want: cut off your nose to spite your face, get left behind by the digital revolution and keep your DVDs.

BTW, are you freaking serious: $600 for a DVD player ten years ago is in real terms well over $1200 today yet you won't spend $300-400 on a BD player? Dude WTF? And *WE* BD users are getting screwed you say? LOL!

PS Market exclusivity didn't stop DVDs dropping in price and clearly you bought them. Self-contradictory much? A much too much.

DelSource

Once again the public screws itself. Now with HD DVD gone, watch as the price of Blu-Ray movies Goes to a consistent $40 without out the benefit of sales. Those higher manufacturing cost are all yours to keep, feel the burn. The only thing expensive in HD DVD was the blue diodes, otherwise it was still just DVD. It wasn't much more expensive than DVD at any stage of the process. The public can now have their "superior technology", those higher bit rates sound sooooo good on your $200 home theater. Those extra gigs for the uncompressed sound track can in handy. And that low end HDTV really brings out the colors more with Blu-Ray. You win Michael Bay, go pick up you extra money at window 3. DVD was actually cheaper than VHS, but the public was willing to pay more. I refuse to pay $40 for a movie, or even $25. 6 months from now, when HD is gone for sure, $30 will be a sell. You'll be paying twice the money for a product that cost 15% more to produce. Blu-Ray is just a way for the companies to charge you more so that the studios can recoup all the money they lose by putting out 25 crap movies to every good movie. The rest of you can go ahead and get screwed if you want. I bought a $600 1st generation DVD player a few days after they came out, I will not buy a Blu-Ray player for a long time. If they are still around in five years, maybe.

Dcbronco

@zlimness: Yeah, just what I want to do... download 300 movies all over again. Should only take about a year or so. You also have to factor in that people covet their material possessions. There are going to be people who would much rather hold a physical copy of a movie in their hands than have one that's made up of a bunch of 1's and 0's. I can see a lot of tech nerds, game nerds, etc embracing downloads but the mainstream public... not so much. I fall in the former and I still say fuck downloads.

cocks

You don't get it. Not everyone wants to spend hours downloading a movie - massive DRM or not. The physical networks don't exist to handle a full-scale movie business either. Downloads haven't killed physical media in music despite constant claims from people like you it would. In Rainbows sold bigger on CDs than it did downloads (some did both, others waited weeks and weeks to get the CD they could handle). Non-DRM tracks aren't selling that much more than DRM'd tracks.

There will still be a need for physical media to store data. But as you said yourself, PC HDDs are hitting 1TB. What happens in a few years when we reach 5TB or 10TB? Then you're back to 200 discs again :p

I beg to differ. Maybe right now it's a niche audience but I'm sure Sony's ultimate goal is to replace DVDs as the standard video format with Blu-Rays. If they're any kind of smart business they'll do everything in their power now to kill DVD along with HD-DVD. It all boils down to how much money and effort they're willing to put into this format.
(it won't stop you from getting a job hopefully, but still kind of funny) "

Why would that be on your resume? If someone handed me a resume that actually said "HD DVD disc maker" I would tell them to leave because that doesn't make any sense. They certainly did not manufacture the discs and it's unlikely that they came up with the design.

Any of the higher up employees at Toshiba and the DVD forum shouldn't have much of a problem with that. Toshiba also created DVD.

NutManIV

I don't mind the blu-ray prices since the quality is good for the most part and Region A having HK, US, and Japan is awesome. I remember I originally wanted the 5 disc Blade Runner set, but they only sold that set with the premium box for $80... but then BD had the 5-disc set for $40. Then there was the Free +5 BD movies last Christmas, and Amazon is having a movie sale where you can get BD movies for around $10-24.

It's crazy how fast everything changed though. Last winter, everyone was telling me how they wanted a Toshiba HD-DVD player.

Puchi

Good, so soon everything will come with BRD because its going to be the new standard. But I still don't see alot people running out to buy a PS3 just to watch movies because there's allways going to be a "cheap" BRD player on the market and Sony doesnt have to play that card for to much longer.

I'm still waiting for more movies to come out on BRD before I buy one and I think its time for MS to drop the price on the 360 now that it offers alot less then the PS3.

I can't wait to see what happens with sales month to month in the future because Blu-Ray won the war. I want to see if it really changed anything when it comes to games.

Gunloc

@DelSource: Oh please...

If a bunch of geeks can put out 1080p rips, don't you think the studios with the actual source material can as well? You make it sound like it's not possible to get a movie in good quality just because it's not on a disc.

Everything you need to take the mainstream market is already there on the illegal scene, and I'm not referring to it because it's free. When people can download hundreds of thousands of movies in 1080p from a huge database for less than a dollar a piece or at a flat rate at the click of a button, preferably in different formats and DRM free, physical media will only cater to the enthusiasts/collectors. Data distribution will eventually make physical distribution of entertainment a thing of the past.

@DelSource: lol, what are you babbling on about. "sub-DVD" quality and "DRM" strict? 1080p rips have been out for a while, and so what if it takes 2-3 hours? It's not like your glued to the bittorrent client. And it wont render your computer into a dead husk. Just leave it on and you won't even notice, I'll promise you.

And saying there's more DRM in rips than on a blu-ray disc = :E

Assuming you're not referring to some sort of legal download service out there of course. But comparing anything to the current legal alternatives is a bit like picking on a retarded kid. When legal services can churn out the same quality as the illegal ones, to have a movie on a physical media will be a nice novelty at best.

zlimness

@DoesNotEqual: Sony Media war wins:

CD.
DVD (with Toshiba)

Partial wins:
Betamax (for the television companies)
Minidisc (somewhat with the recording industry)

losses:

Betamax (with home consumers, anyhow)
Minidisc (again, with home consumers)
UMD (except that PSP games are on it, and there's still a steady and very small stream of people on it)

Eternally second place (but not last!)

Memory Stick (beat out compact flash and such, but sD cards sell in nearly everything)

Sony's losses are really exaggerated, and their wins are ignored. I mean, DVD! But they were second to Toshiba, and DVD wasn't associated with any company. I actually talked to Toshiba America's sales guys around the time HD DVD was being rolled out..they thought Sony was stupid to put Blu Ray into the PS3 and were telling us that Sony people at one of the electronic shows told them they were putting a gimped Blu-Ray player in the PS3 so they had nothing to worry about. They never saw this coming...if they had they would have paid MS whatever it took to get them to build a HD-DVD drive into the 360.

@scottyboy218: All correct, but I must disagree that people who buy it strictly for Bluray will not effect game sales. I have witnessed quite a few people first hand (retail) who do not game at all buy a PS3 and ask what THE best game(s) is saying something to the effect of "might as well". I've also seen much older people buy them for Bluray, but buy games for when kids are over. Also there is the weight of possibility; people who will buy games simply because they can and in a way, feel like they should.

Now, I don't think I implied that this would change the flow of the war by itself, and if I did I apologize for not representing myself well.
yea, maybe when the PS3 first launched, but certainly not anymore that multi-platform games are selling 3x or 4x as much on the 360 as on the PS3 like you claim. Last time I checked DMC4 have sold 500K on the PS3 and 400K on the 360 thus far. Assassin's Creed 2.2m on PS3 and 3.4m on the 360. COD4 2.3m on the PS3 and 4.7m on the 360.

Those are all recent major multiplatform games. None of those numbers are 3x or 4x in favor of the 360.

valkyriex

If anything this lets Sony get away with pushing the 'latest' formats earlier and earlier...slowly ripping the crying currency from our pockets.

@LordChris915:
No. BluRay prices will NOT naturally go down without competition. Competition is good, it makes companies work to produce the better product. And all BD supporters should thank HD-DVD. Without it, we would have had the first draft of BDs, and none of the improvements. Like using double layers for storage, VC-1 codec instead of the old MPEG2, internet connectivity.

Now that the war seems to be over, I just hope that the industry lowers its ridiculous prices. High def or not, I don't see the point in paying the double price for a high def disc instead of the same DVD.

TheBard

@CaptCaveman:

You do realize if Microsoft and Toshiba had decided to put an HD-DVD drive in the 360 from the start it would probably be winning right now right? The major reason Blu-ray won is because of the install base due to PS3 sales. More Blu-ray players = more software sales. If the 360 had an HD-DVD drive, it would have a much larger install base. Combine that with the cheaper prices for standalone players and it's hard not to imagine studios shifting over to HD-DVD.

@Afore Notation: Consoles sold as blu-ray players only will have no bearing on game sales. Game sales are what drives companies to keep producing games. Why do you think the exclusive games were on PS2? If you have 10 million consoles sold, and your game only sells 500,000 copies. But the competitor has 17 million systems, and it sells 3 million copies, it won't help you. This seems to be a trend on PS3. 360 copies are tripling or quadrupling PS3 games sales, when the install base is only twice as big.

scottyboy218

Color me happy, joyful even. The only reason this format "war" dragged out the way it did was Microsoft's dragging it out with their dollars and their toadies littering forums with all sorts of FUD.

It's funny how Toshiba is taking the fall, and MS is staying as far away from the heat and humiliation as it can. Bad times for Microsoft -- RROD, Zune, HD-DUD, Vista, and now they're desperately trying to buy Yahoo, an acknowledgement of how badly they've been f**ed up on the Internet by Google.

I don't shed a single tear for any of the early adopter fanboys screaming that they had the "better", the more "consumer-friendly" format, who are now hanging on to worthless pieces of plastic in red cases. Red means dead, and I couldn't be more thrilled.

Waveracr

@josh924: But the PlayStation 3 wouldn't be fine if Blu-Ray had lost. Microsoft choosing to support HD-DVD at all just polarized the format war even further.

If anything, the fact that these two decisions made the format war as much about PlayStation 3 vs. 360 as it did about Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD probably helped bring about a slightly speedier conclusion to the whole situation.
