I would like to extend my condolences to the friends, family members, and work associates of Hal Halpin, whom I have met. He is a sniveling, hypocritical lobbyist who makes money facilitating the sale of adult products to children, which fraud leads to tragedies such as this.

I should also like to extend my condolences to the video game industry, which contains many good folks, yet manages to saddle itself with goofs like Hal Halpin and Doug Lowenstein, thereby discrediting the entire industry.

I pray that the industry will be able to get out from under the Hal Halpin Tragedy soon. As soon as it does, it can avoid federal legislation. Hal Halpin doesn't want the industry to be responsible. If it were, it would have no need for Joseph Goebbels-like spinners.

All I'm saying is that banning firearms and expecting that to prevent violent crime is not unlike putting internet filters in computers and expecting it will prevent kids from finding porn. There are some problems that you just can't fix on the hardware side of things, if parents can't be bothered to do their job on the "software" side. I'm also saying that there are a lot of people in the US who take the Bill of Rights just as seriously as our founding fathers did, and there is the concern that the 2nd Amendment is often seen as something of a safeguard against any federal erosion of our 1st Amendment rights. Now, that hasn't stopped various States from setting up their own (sometimes overly-restrictive) gun control laws. California is probably the worst, as their laws allow guns to simply be added to the list of banned weapons without any sort of vote process. One result of that is that our top Olympic women's sharpshooter had to move out of California because she was informed that, due to some odd quirk of the way things were worded, her custom-designed _pellet_ pistol was illegal to own.

True, given the choice between some kid terrorizing a school with a basic civilian-class firearm (i.e. one that does _not_ feature automatic fire), and the same kid setting up explosive charges all over campus, I'd have to say that a gun-toting wack-job is by far the lesser evil. SWAT teams can always pinpoint his location from bullet trajectories and take him out with snipers, but if he's popping bombs with a remote detonation device, tracking him down becomes a very tricky process unless he starts making ransom demands.

Firearms are distance warfare with lethal ends. Not only do they provide a coward's means of eliminating a target, it also allows for a coward's escape from taking responsibility for his/her actions by shooting themselves in the head afterwards.

The answers to that question would likely shock you. Seems that in the US, homicide rates have been dropping for ~20 years, but Canada recently spent over _2_billion_ on a complex gun registry program that was initiated after a university killing spree, and shooting murders remained fixed, while homicide rates in general actually rose. The UK enacted an outright ban on handguns (requiring that even valuable antiques be turned over for destruction), and their homicide rate is on the rise. Australia spent a bundle on destroying newly-outlawed firearms and the crime rate didn't waver at all. Worst of all, the Republic of Ireland practically banned all firearms in the 70's, and anyone who's heard of "the troubles" knows how much of an impact that had (hint: car bombs don't need guns to work, and the IRA had a bunch of buried weapons caches anyways). Point is, you can't stop someone from commiting violent crimes by preventing them from getting one type of weapon. A guy with a couple of razor-sharp machetes running through a classroom could kill just as many people as a sniper on a rooftop.

While better controls on handguns could be useful (maybe), the places with the tightest gun control have some of the worse crime and gun murder rates. New York, LA, Detroit all have tight ass laws about guns yet look at them. Now look at my home state of Oklahoma. The rural parts.... ass tons of guns yet very few mass murders and gun killings. Could be a cultural thing I suppose. If more fathers would take their sons (and daughters) hunting and shooting this would be a good thing. This teaches respect for the gun and hopefully proper gun safety.

Honestly the best route would be the US go the way of the Swiss. Every man must go to the Army to train (for say like 1 year) and they all must keep a rifle at home. This would increase gun awareness, self disciple, and have the effect of adding a lot of well armed 'good' men to persuade some 'evil' ones.

Knee jerk reactions about banning stuff because of a few incidents is just bad thought process.

All of this urban folks trying to tell me what is best about my guns is really starting to piss me off. Especially when most of these folks don't know jack shit about what they are talking about. Most of these folks have never gone shooting with dad, or have even owned a gun. All they see are the 'evil men'.

I second that. In Australia we had a shotting a tourist attraction. We all but banned guns. I don't understand how you can have this many gun related incidents and not have stricter gun control. It's not easy to get a handgun in New York State. I am still waiting on my background check, which you have to apply for in person at a sheriffs office.

My rifle took about 30 minutes, which I had to show a picture ID and wait for the Gander Mountain Employee to call Albany to run a short background check/mental heath report.

I submit to you why doesn't anyone blame this asshole for being crazy and killing people. He stopped taking medication and was acting erratic. This was in the police report. I remember shit like that going on after 9/11 with reporters comming to my friends game store asking if there were any games that portrayed New York in it, or any flight sims that involved aircraft and buildings. Was so getting pissed off with that reporter in the store, along with everyone else. Talk about grasping at straws.
