Maybe I'm missing something here, since you all seem to be taking this so seriously, but I can't imagine Suda would have meant for this to a be a legitimate entry into the Mario series, much less an attempt to take the Mario franchise in a new direction. Can't we just, you know, have fun?

besides, can't you see how taking the ultra-cheery Mario and making him ultra-dark would be a great comedy in and of itself? It's not one of those things where you go "Wow, what a fantastic and enlightening gameplay experience", you go "Oh my god, this is the most geniously cracked-out Mario I've ever played. I love it."

God, I am waiting for a more mature Mario game. Maybe not necessarily one as described by Suda, but if it were to include a deep storyline, maybe some guns in urban areas, and more character development---count me in.

Do note that I'm not saying all Mario games have to be like this. I love Mario games as they are, with platforming and all. A small change would be very much appreciated, though.

Why does anyone think Mario wouldn't use guns in an innovative way? I don't think he'd use it just to shoot everyone up. Think of it in a more cartoony sense: mario using the gun to get blocks from far away, mario using the gun to shoot into the ground to make himself jump higher, mario using the gun to shoot into the air and scare some enemies away, mario using the gun to open locked doors, mario using the gun to take the wings of flying turtles, mario using the gun to throw the big bombs off course, and sometimes, mario using the gun to weaken a boss or kill a small enemy [the "kill" shots could be counted and limited..maybe like the fireflower]

it doesn't even need to be a modern gun, he could have an older pistol and it might fit into the game's context more.

Dude, me and my brother have been envisioning an epic Halo RTS for ages. Basically you have a Halo-esque setup, but instead of guns Mario shoots fireballs, but you have lots of different TYPES of fireballs. Instead of, say, flying a Banshee, you get a Cape/Tail/Hat power up that makes Mario fly. Maybe you could ride on yoshi as a vehicle or something.

Silly? Yeah, but it's still awesome. I'd play it.

I'm all for the whole "Mario needs to innovate instead of being whored out to every sport known to man" movement. But not guns.

Suda 51 should stick to his own creative ideas. Letting him futz with a pre-existing character would stagnate his artistic abilities and infuriate rabid fanboys when he bastardizes their favorite icon.
