I know I probably get flamed but I hate PC gaming now, and I played most of the biggest PC games out there, spend thousands of dollars on upgrades.

Reason I hate PC gaming is because it became too expensive and inconvenient, its crazy, every 6 months to play a PC game to its best (as developer intended) you have to sell your soul to buy a new GFX card etc etc.

Long live consoles, I buy a PS3 or Xbox360, have it for 5 years and know any game I buy for that platform will work, no driver issues, no compatibility issues, gets patched as soon as there is an update, no worry about HDD space, no online cheating/hackers etc etc. Love it. I hope the next gen consoles (PS4 etc) will kill off PC gaming for good, there, I said it! :)

Zeuxis

Companies release them later because the system requirements are too high for the masses to port a game straight to PC. Thankfully most games are always 10-20$ cheaper on PC.

You know if there wouldn't be such rampant piracy on PC maybe they'd be released simultaneously. Piracy is another issue, since they try to incite people to actually BUY the games, making them available with a timed-exclusivity on consoles is a way to lure eager players.

interstate78

@Tuor: What killing , All the best games on consoles ( for the most part ) eventually make it to PC. Gears, Lost planet , All the Resident evil games, Tomb raider etc. Heck now Mass effect is coming to PC , you know GTA 4 will go there. DMC4 will go there RE 5 will go there. Just like the absolute best from PC get console remakes (HL2 , UT, etc)

Also what about the experimental attempts to allow cross platform gaming( Shadowrun and the 2 or 3 other games )

And don't forget that almost all of those games wind up playing BETTER than their console versions.

All consoles will be in 2 more generations are full on PCs complete with everyday usable OSs minus the ability to upgrade non storage media hardware. PS3 is almost there , 360 could get there with some changes to the dashboard and in 4 or 5 more generation nintendo might actually step up and do the same.

The only thing that keeps the division between console and PC in place is the belief that without the division one will cease to exist which as nintendo has proved will never be the case.

All graphics aside, the ability to cross platform play between PS3 360 AND PC is already there the only difference would be in what the player sees while playing not the background stuff that for the most part is the same on all three.

slapBOXmaster

I call Bullshit. MS has been doing nothing but trying to kill the PC as a gaming platform for years now. They buy up PC dev companies and set them to making "exclusives" for their consoles. Then, they throw PCers a bone every once in a while to keep the PR from getting too bad (usually while trying to urge them to buy a XBOX 360). I wouldn't call this an alliance, but a cabal.

Tuor

You know what would be better? How bout MS stop dumbing down PC games and releasing them for 360 FIRST (and getting companies to do so, as well), then bringing it to PC for $50 a year later. That would help PC gaming A BIT.

GhaleonUnlimited

They need to design all games using a specific set of hardware that can maintain a minimum of 30 fps at all times at 1024x768 with no options in the game to reduce or increase graphic quality so everyone plays the same game so you can actually hide behind a plant knowing the guy you are going to attack won't see you first. Games will need to be designed for that piece of hardware for 2 years thus promoting better designed games with more detail overall. At the end of the 2 years we move on to a newer setup thus promoting computer upgrades which means building new computers and upgrading which means spending money for more stuff overall instead of a video card upgrade every year which means profit for all companies involved.

demonwolf

i think product key verification via the internet is probably the anti piracy tool publishers have at their disposal. the verification issue surrounding bioshock land firmly at 2k's feet. they dropped the ball by not having an uninstall web verification to compliment the install web verification. also limiting the number of times you could load the game reeked of poor form. truncating big titles around the 4th quarter also seems like a recipe for disaster. an average gamer may be able to spring for two or three aaa titles during the holiday shopping season, the rest of the games have a good chance of being pirated. some games released during the rest of the year really have no business asking for aaa prices. publishers pick up new ip's from some pretty obscure devs, then expect gamers to pay 49.99 for these titles when they hit the market. sorry, mate but infernal is worth 19.99 (29.99 at best). nameless games from nameless devs need to earn the right to ask for 49.99 from me.

rennyf77

How the hell is this good for PC gaming??

Why do you think they are forming an alliance with only hardware manufacturers? Honestly, wouldn't you rather put up with something anal that goes on at the software end? Doesn't it worry you that they basically grabbed all these hardware guys, with the goal of cleaning up PC gaming? Again, you've got Intel, AMD, ATI and Nvidia, all joining forces with Microsoft.

Do you like HDCP? What if these companies decide that they are going to place chips in video cards, processors, motherboards and the like to "combat piracy"? Next thing you know, you are physically unable to create a backup copy of a game you bought, or aren't able to install daemon tools/cracks to forgo the goddamn disc protection. I mean right now if you have a legit Bluray movie, and a drive, you can't watch it without a HDCP licensed monitor. Imagine if that works into gaming somehow.

Pugnate

I hope they fail. Microsoft has only one goal in mind and that is to
monopolize the market. Say hello to 15$ a month to play your favorite
shooter cause they have the market in a stranglehold and the only way
they allow developers to release software is through their online
portal.
And say hello to micropayments too and the fall of the mod community
since you can´t ask for 5$ a map if some nerd modder makes one for
free. The xbox already is what they want and how much control do you
have over that box? You don´t even own the movies you pay for. God i
hope the PC never goes that way.

Jaml

I don't understand why people are viewing this as a bad thing. They didn't say they were going to try and make a monopoly out of PC gaming; forcing us all to constantly upgrade our GPUs. They didn't say they were going to stop producing consoles. All they want is to get PC gaming back up to what it used to be and make piracy a less big issue somehow. I hope that they succeed.

ReVivAL

@ArtemisFei: That is kind of my point... it seems that in today's terms, accessible and unified(cell phone games, consoles) are trumping the esoteric and constantly evolving PC. I agree with what you said about how it USED to be the must buy, but as with everything, companies follow the money. With only about 10% of gaming is PC based..... and alot of that pirated, who wants to go there?

The PC was a CRUCIAL stepping stone to gaming as a whole, and future advancements will continue to help gaming, but only to advance console or simple/universal set ups, sadly. PCs have been replaced as gaming rigs. That is an inevitable reality.... they are still the home of hardcore gamer population, yet with more and more people playing games heading to consoles with the Wii and do-all videogame consoles, their populations will continue to dwindle.... but not completely go away...

I just think it is slightly silly that companies whose microchips and graphic processors and consoles are making millions from console gaming are continually going back to the PC population. I may be wrong, but I believe that in the long term, I will be vindicated.

Now... if they united to provide the "unified single console" of the NEXT generation that doesnt rely on disk technology, pure processing power that is decade-ish future-proof, and easily usable, then, again, newsworthy.... going back to PC gaming is not NEWWWWWs.

hopelesshindu

@KanoBlade: You do realize that if there was more agreement in how PCs were constructed and//or sold, then all people would have to do is add that $240 GFX card (I'm looking at you, 8800GT 512Mb) and that's it... they bought a console in the form of one PC addition.

RAM keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. You don't need a stupid $200+ CPU, quad-extreme, unlocked multiplier chip to game. 2Gb RAM + $130 CPU could be standard in PCs and not raise costs. A 500W PS, if made well (which Dell and other companies really don't slack in their quality in PS, it's just they are usually lower power) is all a decent gaming rig would need.

Haha,.. Microsoft goes into PC hardware sales in the form of a "gaming rig" outlet with wholesale parts from AMD, Intel, and nVidia... Xbox anyone?

Ken

Among a large group of nerds whom I've known since early highschool (12-15 years), it's ended up shaking down into essentially two groups; PC Gamers, Consol Gamers. The most common thing among the PC Gamers is that they don't have the tech support jobs anymore and have moved on to a lucrative salary (and still build thier own computers). Among the consol gamers, I've noticed most of them still work at call centers, have burdened themselves with children, or shackled themselves with wives. Their most vocal objection to PC gaming is thier wives anger at the money they would have to spend.

My conclution; if you used your nerd to make you bank, you are likly a PC gamer and will always be one. If you used you nerd to grow a neck beard and lord your computer knowledge over users for 14 dollars an hour, you are probably a Consol Gamer (but secretly wish you could afford a new "Gaming Rig").

DevCo

I think the point is more that many DRMs are literally harmful to your computer, most notably Starforce. DRM-free software has its benefits, and it's not as if hackers haven't been able to crack any and everything anyways. I'm by no means arguing in favor of piracy on any level, but it's like these companies are punishing the people who are actually buying the games through the shoddy DRM progrmas, while pirates have free reign with a hacked copy.

Strangelove

Developers work with Nvidia and Intel to gain free access to their premium labs and the like, meanwhile Nvidia gets first crack at the developers' code to release optimised drivers ahead of the competition. Partner developers' games are slapped with aforementioned companies' logos.

EvaUnit02

This seems like the Coalition of the un-Thrilling... PC gaming alliance? Just let the PC games minus MMOs and keyboard intensive shooters die already... Just because they are the most vocal gaming sub-group doesn't mean that companies should kowtow to the ancient gaming relic... I mean... cell phone games in JAPAN sell as many games as PC games.... I only play fun flash games and free, independent user-created games on mine, so I cant talk for the whole, but I used to, but it became just dumb to constantly buy expensive new computer components when the rest of the family uses MS Word, VLC Media Player and checks their emails.

Unite to dominate the console market... THAT would make news.

hopelesshindu

"...but a lot of us just want to play better - and more - good old-fashioned PC games." Absolutely.

@amost:

I don't begrudge console gamers their systems; they're great, fantastic, etc. I played on consoles long before I touched a PC and I'll continue to game with them. But (and it is a big but): there are a lot of things you can't do with a console that are possible with a computer. Fanmade game mods, more elaborate control possibilities, mouse-based menus, and so on. There are whole genres that are by and large missing from the gaming mix.

This is not meant to be a flame. Consoles are great--they do some things better than PCs, for certain. I, for one, just miss having a surplus of great games on my PC.

Shevek

Ugh...

Now don't get me wrong, I'm certainly a console gamer.

But if these three start working a little too closely together, gaming PCs will end up being consoles.

Part of the charm of PC gaming is that it gives you a choice regarding your own computer.

If the three biggest players in their respective parts of the PC gaming market work together to make their competitors incompatible with the software (and they can; together, these three can effectively ransom the whole computer gaming industry), we'll end up with glorified consoles.

Folks; scary shit like that is why proprietary software and closed hardware designs and conventions was NOT a good idea in the first place. I know some of you 'mericans loves their capitalism, but THIS here is why we should never have left large monopolistic entities control such large parts of the market.

Guizzy
