the netflix email was the nail in the coffin for me and hd-dvd. I went to eb this afternoon and traded in the hd-dvd drive, and 11 hd-dvd's. All in all it was worth 96.00.
somehow i feel good about the trade, no longer tied to a dead format professor layton will be all the sweeter.

Gadgetron

Maybe I'll finally be able to rent a Blu-ray movie; I went to my local blockbuster on saturday to try and rent 3:10 to Yuma on Blu-ray and they only had two copies, both of which were out. There were probably 30 copies of it on DVD, but I decided I was better off downloading it on Live at 720p.

Heyyou27

I guess I'm the big loser though. I have both. Someone was going to lose. Glad I quit buying HD's after Bourne Ultimatum and had started buying Blu-Ray whenever there was an option - guess I figured this was coming.

It's amazing to see the "console war" attitudes being spread into the format war. I guess people get really upset when something they feel comfortable with is suddenly taken away, even if the replacement does the same thing seamlessly.

If you like hi def media be glad that Toshiba and it's partners weren't successful. The limitations in storage space caused the move to a new disc in the first place, and HD-DVD is short on storage compared to BD. Why would anyone want what amounts to a stop gap solution, just to do this again in 5-6 years? To end up with something like BluRay anyway?

crashlanding

Funny...I have a PS3 and I don't own an HD-DVD, but I was hoping HD-DVD would gain some serious market share with the lowering of their prices. Warner Bros. last minute decision to go Blu-Ray really took the wind out of HD-DVD's sails.

HD-DVD made sense to me. No regional coding, and a nice transition between regular dvd and HD-DVD by offering combo discs. I think HD-DVD went awry by not offering their movies at lower prices than Blu-Ray...after all, their manufacturing costs were lower, that price should have been passed to the consumer.

It's official now, they just released a Press Release:

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is taking a step forward in addressing consumer confusion about high-definition formats. Beginning in early March, the leading consumer electronics retailer will prominently showcase Blu-ray hardware and software products in its Best Buy retail and online channels in the United States.

"Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We've listened to our customers, and we are responding. Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as the preferred format," said Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president and chief operating officer. "Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them."

Dunn continued, "Best Buy has always believed that the customer will benefit from a widely-accepted single format that would offer advantages such as product compatibility and expanded content choices. Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as that single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products."

"With the explosion of HDTVs, customers are hungry for quality, high definition content. We believe our move to feature Blu-ray should help consumers feel confident in their hi-def content choices," said Mike Vitelli, Best Buy's senior vice president, Home Solutions. "Best Buy is excited by the next generation of digital products and we know our customers are too. We are excited about helping customers find the right mix of products and services to make the next generation of high definition entertainment technology come alive for them. We believe that Blu-ray is the right solution for consumers."

Best Buy currently carries a wide array of Blu-ray hardware and software products. The company noted that it will continue to carry an assortment of HD-DVD products for customers who desire to purchase these products.

As for digital distribution, I'm still not sure movies are analogous to music when it comes to its mainstream potential. The bandwidth infrastructure may catch up to be able to handle the size of a high def movie, or someone in the distribution chain is going to decide to save someone some money and compress the hell out of movies, have software upscale it, and tell us that it's awesome. I think it will be a nice convenient option, but I hope there will always be a big fat disc with maxed out specs for videophiles.

You could argue that compression can do magical things, but I think that having loads of space on a physical medium provides more options for the people writing the media.

But in terms of it's impact to gaming, I still think it's just a bonus. People grumbled that the PS3's blu-ray could have become obsolete, but the truth is that it would always play games not matter the outcome of the format war. Even if DVD's remain supreme or digital downloads become dominant, and stay blu-ray niche, this would still be true.

gozirah

I for one don't understand all this digital distribution malarky. iTMS works because people can download single songs for $1 instead of buying an album for $10+. With video that advantage is gone, because there's no way films could be split like that, and I very much doubt people would want individual episodes of television series.

What reason would I, a rather normal but nevertheless slightly more savvy consumer, have to care about a format that requires an internet connection to be of any use, will most likely implement some major vendor lock-in, one where I have no easy way of lending movies to/borrowing from friends and will be of no use if my particular content vendor goes out of business and then the HDD on my set-top box fails? Oh, it's "the future of home entertainment". Wheee.

NameYourCharacter

@fulgore66:

They'll find a work-around to those issues, for example, you download your movies to an internet storage place, let us name it "HQ", and from your HQ account you have access to your movies at any time, though, you can only download the movie say 2 times but instead you can stream the movie how many times you want to any computer you want. For saftey they have a limit that gives you a warning and ultimately bans you if two computers access your account simultainously so you don't share your account with the world.

This way you still have your movies if a disc crashes, and you can take them with you anytime you want! Simple solution really. The connection speed argument is kinda moot by the way as you don't download movies on a bad connection.

TakeoNinja

I still think online distribution will fail. 2 major problems:

1. You don't own anything physical. It's on a drive and when that drive fails, everything is gone. And Joe Average is WAY too stupid to back things up. As soon as Joe Average has a single drive failure, he'll say "what the fuck do you mean it's gone. Fuck that."

2. You can't take your movies, games, etc to a friends house. Unless you want to lug around your PS3/Tivo.

Physical media will always serve a purpose. As nice as online dist will be for some uses, it will not dominate the market in the near future.

fulgore66

@Kyle81: You can still buy working betamax players on Ebay if you look hard enough. I'm sure people will be able to find something to play their HD-DVDs if they feel the need 10 years from now. Of course, I don't even own a VCR for my tapes so I doubt I'll really want a player down the road once a new format becomes the biggest and the best like DVD is now.

The library here received a bunch of sweet Laserdisc movies not long ago and I took them just as display pieces. They are all in perfect condition in these nice plastic case covers and the artwork makes a nice display piece in the entertainment room (like vinyl record cases) It's like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Die Hard, Aliens and they look sweet. Too bad my HD-DVD movies have pretty much shite cases. Nothing worth showing off for the sake of it.

Adam In Texas

Best Buy just sent out a press release that beginning March 1st, they will endorse Blu-ray as the single HD format for the consumer.

I have to admit, this is all happening far quicker than I expected. By May 1st, people won't even remember HD-DVD.

Well it looks like Sony actually knew what it was doing by making the PS3 a Blu-ray compatible device.

Either that or they got totally lucky and are loving it. ;)

sascha23

I feel bad for all the people who bought HD-DVD players as frankly, for a while this looked like it could go either way. Both formats had their advantages. I am glad one is being chosen but even still, the costs are way to high for the average joe. I don't see blu-ray overtaking DVD anytime soon. It may have beaten HD-DVD but that still don't mean it won't end up like laserdisc, a format that was leaps and bounds ahead of everything else but still never overtook the VHS market. I do have to say though that if one thing about blu-ray winning does upset me it is that I was quite pleased to see HD-DVD adopt a region free system. At least with blu-ray Japan and Hong Kong are in the same region as me in the US but it still totally bites for our poor friends in Europe who have to deal with long delays and inferior releases with material deleted from the Region A discs.

daizyujin
