Regarding the writing system used for the in-game language - I haven't really been paying attention to it, but I'm pretty sure I spotted Cyrillic at one point and maybe Greek lettering. It seems they took multiple real-world writing systems and mashed them together at random.

Regarding the game itself, it's a very traditional JRPG. However, it also happens to be a very well-made traditional JRPG. And it has a more mature story line than is usual for the genre. As long as you don't hate these kind of games, I'd recommend it. (And for comparison, I thought Blue Dragon was utter trash!)

I'm not the biggest fan of jRPGs, but I'm enjoying this.

Graphic wise the game isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but that trailer is all CGI.

Flynn's criticism is only partly valid, as yes, it has that "next-gen" colour palette in some areas, but some areas you explore are quite colourful, particularly the Crimson Forest.

Although the story is completely contrived and throughly Final Fantasy / Japanese, I'm really enjoying it.

These types of games have always felt like playing through a manga film to me, and that appeals to me at the moment, and Lost Odyssey is beautifully put together and is quaint and even quite emotional in parts.

It won't appeal to everyone, but if you like Japanese and Manga films, jRPGs and Final Fantasy, you'll love it.

Either way, all I'm saying is that most of what is seen in the trailer is probably like the videos in Uncharted and R&C. Call that what you like (pre-rendered using the in-game engine?), but it can't be all CG. Any company would be pretty lame if, in this day and age, they couldn't come up with better looking CGs than that. As I said, CGs in old PS2 games looked better than that. Plus there are framerate problems, so at least some of it has to be in real time. That shot with kids playing with some sculpture and the camera traveling back has to be real time.

Look at Gears of War, greys, browns, blacks, were all very common. Without them, it would have ruined the atmosphere of the game. Also, there was a scene of some kind of ocean in that same video, and it had a very blue/white tone to it. Again, atmosphere. And I'm sure you've seen other scenes as well, very different locales from the look of it.

Whether the game is actually good or not, I don't know, I'm leaning towards not right now, just because I have very little interest in the characters so far. But the locations? Beautiful.

There isn't going to be a demo. The only way you could get the japanese demo was via famitsu or some such nonsense. It wasn't released on the Live marketplace... ever I believe. Might be mistaken on this, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Besides, the Blue Dragon demo was terrible, though the game was not. If they fracked up a demo for this one too it could easily hurt the game's sales, not help them.

Fooly Cooly is a Japanese show on the Adult Swim lineup that features crazy nonsensical plot lines and sexually explicit humor about 14 year olds.
Its great. You should watch it some time.

Without playing a really standout Final Fantasy since FFX, I'm looking forward to this. Though, Mistwalker seems very content to rest on the basis of all JRPG without trying to really break the mold.

I'd have to disagree. Any good RPG demo is going to give the player a taste of the battle system and, honestly, if you don't enjoy the battle system, how are you going to be able to force yourself to play the game?

To me, demos are pointless for role playing games ... seeing as how they usually take up to 2 hours to even get good. I heard a rumor that this game doesn't even have 1 fight sequence in it, until 2 hours into the game.

For me, interesting environments are an excellent part of a good rpg experience, but so often they are just pretty backgrounds with no interactivity blighted with stationary cameras that don't allow you to really look around. Eternal Sonata really comes to mind there.
