If Silent Hill Origins was any indication, this game is going to be a giant, throbbing, bloody piece of shit. This development house seems absolutely fixated on the movie version of Silent Hill; or, as I like to say, "The Fucking Shitty Version". Oh, they say that they'll have psychological horror. Yeah, they'll play a SPOOKY noise in the background while you fight a Giant Spider made of Bones in the Haunted Orphanage. Oh, and the protagonist will probably be a really uninspired rehash of James from Silent Hill 2. Except they won't make him endearing like James, they'll make him a high school math teacher or something. *EDIT: Apparently the protagonist is a soldier. FUCKING GREAT. I'm putting 20 smackaroonies down RIGHT NOW that says he has a war-time flashback, albeit a SPOOKY one. Either that, or he sees a "dead" war-buddy sometime during the game. But get this: he's not dead! OR IS HE?!

Colwyn vs. The Beast

Basically they're just rehashing old content, while screwing up other things. The protagonist for instance, wtf?

I'm going to give it a chance. I'm one of the few that semed to enjoy Origins and The Room, although even my blind fanboyism couldn't mask the hideous car wreck that the movie was. Get rid of breakable weapons, give us MUCH LESS combat and go back to the creepy explorative nature of old games and you'll have exactly what I want. I know the guy is a soldier, but I just want less combat situations, regardless of how he deals with them.

TearsandScreams

@Mavwick: Broken stomp mechanism. I've never had a problem stomping creatures until Silent Hill Origins. And it was so bad, I almost quit playing the game for that reason alone. Having monsters get back up 3x because the stomp didn't work was frustrating. Having 2 creatures come at you and having no stomp work, is utter frustration.

Plus the camera angle/movement scheme. I kept on going the wrong direction due to camera angle changes. I've actually ran away from monsters, had the camera angle change, then ran straight back INTO the monster. Didn't happen often but it happened.

It's not a weapon problem that I had. In fact, weapon wise, the game was too easy. I pretty much had ALL the rifle, assault rifle, and magnum bullets left. I had like 50 shotgun shells left, and like 80 of each of the pistol bullets. I also had healing items up the wazoo. And then I killed the final boss with 2 katanas. After I killed the boss, I waited for the harder form to come but I found out I actually beat the game. :O I didn't use the magnum the entire game.

The story was so-so in my opinion. I wasn't really driven to finish the game because of the story. It just didn't draw me in as much as the other SH games. I didn't think it was BAD per se, it just wasn't as gripping. If they didn't have the 2 big game play flaws I would have said Origins was a good game, especially for a portable.

spork

I love how people love to say this game will be the worst in the series, going only on the fact that it's made by an American team. Hell, so what if the that the original Silent Hill was heavily inspired by Steven King, Jacobs Ladder, and possibly David Lynch? Who the hell cares if the game's creator said from the start that he was trying to emulate an American style horror movie?

Also, we all know Metroid Prime, Contra 4 were sullied forever by a North American development team.

Thorax

@spork: What were the frustrating flaws in SH:O? Weapons could break, but if you explored like any other SH game requires, you'll still finish the game with 30+ more in your inventory. There's also way too much ammo for the guns, so halfway through you can feel free to shoot everything that moves.
Its flaw is being too short, but for a portable game I didn't feel that was too bad. The story was so great and the parallels between it and SH2 are minimal at best, largely drawn from post-game ruminations than anything given.

Alluding to the plot of SH3 as laudable makes everyone weary of this upcoming title. To me, SH:O may be the last in the series.

Mavwick

@Amnesiac85: Because Silent Hill Origins feels like "Silent Hill We Tried to Copy the Silent Hill Formula and Did a Decent Job but with a few Huge Flaws".

The main problem with Silent Hill 4 was they threw in a few new game play ideas, some of which were fairly fun at times, but at other times very frustrating. So SH4 tried new game play ideas coupled with a brand new interesting story line and was lambasted for the game play flaws.

Silent Hill Origins tried pretty much nothing new (the "new" stuff was pretty minor) with a story line that felt too familiar (Travis -> James in SH2?) but introduced frustrating flaws in the game play. So it's like we got Silent Hill 2 for the PSP with a much weaker story line and game play issues.

SHO was a passable and decent game. It's just not great.

spork

Silent Hill has already delivered some extraordinary goods, while it would be nice if it could deliver those same goods again, I think it's even better if it can deliver something new and equally excellent. They haven't convinced me yet that they are able to do that, but at least they are trying. Or so they say.

ara

Not playing it mind you, it freaks the hell outta me, I'm currently watching a friend o' mine play through SH2. I tend to run away squeeling like a marmaset when pyramid head appears...
or when there is loud machine noises...

Really, the scariest? Alright!! I figured he'd say something like "this game will deliver pulse-pounding terror that is is slightly less scary than 2 but scarier than 3" or "this game will be almost but not quite the best Silent Hill yet," but now that I know it's the scariest, I'm totally pumped!!!

catapult37

The only reason I am excited for this game is to see Yahtzee review it. Other than that I haven't paid much attention to this series since the third installment and I don't think that will change with "Silent Hill 5".

For some reason I am excited for the new "Alone in the Dark" game though. Hopefully Atari can stay afloat long enough to release it.

Ganglor

@Edmon: Resident Evil and Silent Hill are quite different actually. Resident Evil is a more fast, action based survival horror game where most of the "scare" comes from being surprised and the fun comes from the action (especially RE4; which was fun as hell, but not particularly scary).

Silent Hill is slower, more atmospheric and moody, and the "scare" comes from the atmosphere and "wrongness" of the town. The fun comes from the atmosphere and storyline.

I'm going to hope this one turns out well. I'm kinda worried though after the Silent Hill movie and Silent Hill Origins.

spork

I never really got into Silent Hill. It's a shame because I played a bit of it and really enjoyed it. But I perferred Resident Evil... just because I had more fun playing it I guess.

Now Resident Evil has gone down the pan (Exception being the AWESOME RE:4) it'd be good to jump in on the latest game and see whats new :).

Edmon
