As a tornado victim myself (May 3rd 1999 Moore Oklahoma) my heart goes out to this guy, but I have some good news for him: once the National Guard lets you back in you will be surprised to see how much of your stuff survived. My NES, SNES, N64, and Playstation all survived the one that hit my house plus my TV survived and is still in use today (though it is a tube). My computer also survived. Hell even a good portion of my comic book collection survived.

His parents homeowners insurance should cover it, My apartment was robbed of over 7,500 in computers DVD's a Videogames. all i had to do was document everythign which was stolen and they gave me retail value of everything. pretty sweet considering i mainly buy used games. this is a site devoted to gaming news, not reporting every incident in which natural disasters harmed someones gaming supplies and or stuff. If it has become such, then I have some things I never got to post, such as:

In 2003 my house burned down. Game system dating back to the magnovox odyssey were ruined. Well over 15,000 in gaming related stuff had fire damage. I lovingly cleaned it all out by hand, replaced the lasers on the optical drive based systems, and used insurance to replace what I couldnt repair.

1 Year later someone broke into one of my game rooms (I have 3) and made off with $2300 worth of stuff. He was never caught, but the joke is on him - he forgot to steal the game system power supplies and controllers. Again, insurance saved the day.

Last year someone spilled milk on my psp. I didn't bother asking my insurance people about that one. I dont think retarded negligence is listed. I also didn't post on the forums though telling everyone about m tragedy.

Neither did I do that when my house burned down. Instead I ran my animals to the vet/buried the ones that died, found a hotel to stay in for 5 months while the home was rebuilt, dealt with the insurance people, dug through the remains of the burned down house to find any pictures or other memorable things from my deceased father, and life went on.

That said, everybody jump on board. Lets hear about every bodies tragedies! Maybe one of the jackfucks that sit here telling people like me not to read this guys post since I'm 'negative' will donate ps2's and ds's to all of us!

hmm, so here's the thing ... i haven't even read all the posts yet, but guys - this was not a please help me out post. this was honestly more of an attempt at evangelism than anything else. i don't care if i never get my stuff back, i really don't. i saw an opportunity to witness to some people and explain how God has given me a new perspective and how these material posessions really don't even matter. the part of the letter than they didn't post said that going to a christian univeristy (union university) has given me a new perspective on material posessions, and fleeting earthly pleasures. i hve my life, my fraternity borther who was trapped for 3 hours is walking without a scratch and i have loving friends and family who will take me in. if i hadn't mentioned video games, kotaku wouldn't have run the story, and you guys wouldn't have been interested. i don't care if i get my stuff back, i'm lucky to be alive. it's sad how much many of you completely missed the point of this article.

Frankly i dont think we or anybody should be sittin there trying to find relevancy or authenticity to the kids story cause frankly there is no way of knowing that. The kid said he went through a tragedy an mentioned he lost afew things.. he NEVER asked anybody for donations or handouts so for all those ppl on here that said hes asking for handouts read agian.

I'm just being cynical and a realist here, but all the people that are saying that because he talked about his health first that it's ok he mentioned his gear. Or that his second paragraph redeems him because he said it's just stuff.

But has no one ever been manipulated before? What better way to manipulate than by saying so many good things around your "request" for $2000 worth of video game hardware.

Why didn't he give value to the car as well? Or clothes? Why is he so bored without company if he's living with friends? To me, the "bored" comment was added to get the donations flowing.

I'm glad however that Kotaku didn't actually supply an email address or anything, as that kind of keeps donations going towards this.

I do believe this story, and I hate this to happen to anyone. But the mention of a dollar amount and specific items rings hollow to me. You could just say, "I lost all of my video games," and probably garner more sympathy, since I would have to imagine how much you lost. Instead, I just see it as a list of wants.

I'm very fond of everything i game on but if something like this would happen (not that it ever will because all we get is very heavy rain) i would be concerned about my girlfriend and my cats first and as soon as i know they are ok i would get really depressed because of my gaming systems. Games are my life and some asshole is telling me they're not as important as other people dying whom i don't even know? So i should just give up whatever my life is like because someone died? Piss off.

Wow a minute just went by so that means a whole bunch of people died whilst i was writing this! I should get a life and cure cancer or something. What an epiphany!

My new goals:
1 Learn about cancer.

3 Do something.

To be truthfull (and less sarcastic) there's only so much you can do. Sometimes you have worry about meaningless things. Because that's all you get in life, and if you're not happy with it then what's the point of living?

Here's a little story: when I flew to my parents' for Christmas, my luggage was lost. It contained several expensive items (including my Christmas presents as well as my Wii - and the first asshole who tells me I shouldn't have packed my Wii in my suitcase can go fuck themself).

When I talk about what happened, I do mention the contents of my luggage. Isn't it natural to do so when your belongings are stolen, destroyed or otherwise lost?
I don't think it makes me a beggar (I refused money from my mother who wanted to help), nor does it make Pdubbs601 one.

And as a side note to his side note, it doesn't sound like his stuff got destroyed, it just sounds like he can't access his room due to the quarantine and is just hoping any jerks, who raid and hit homes after the aftermath of mother nature, don't go hi-jacking his junk in the meantime.

The man's probably looking for a little sympathy from fellow gamers who invest in their hobby and might feel the same gamer pangs of loss when stuff gets lost or destroyed, but it doesn't sound anything like a handout for freebies.

If anything, send the poor soul a bitty stuffed companion cube to cuddle, he's just a little lonely, bored gamer who needs a hug.

I grew up in TN, and all of my family lives down there. I was quite freaked out yesterday until I got in touch with all of them, but thankfully they are okay. I've had a car damaged in a tornado before; luckily, I was never displaced by one. Hope you are able to get to your stuff soon.

And wow, people here are total jerks sometimes. Did you guys go and kick some kids who were displaced by Katrina? Maybe the guy just wanted to vent a little bit about what happened to him.

It's different yes, but you can get contents insurance that covers what's in your room though who knows if his policy covers stuff like tornadoes. Home Owners Insurance is coverage for property owners covering both loss/damage to property or dwelling and personal liability. This means ANYTHING in your house and your house / apartment, is covered and will be replaced, if it's stolen or destroyed..

Guys, calm the hell down. I don't think this should be a call to arms. If you've got the giving, volunteering spirit, that's great and rock on.
But I think the takeaway here is that reading something like this makes a large disaster a lot more real and personal. This guy didn't die, but lost all the vestiges of a hobby he (probably) loves, and lost a ton of personal effects. And he's one of our community. So feel for him and be thankful for what you got.

God man i feel for you. I grew up in the midwest. I've seen the distructive power a tornado. Thank god that you and your friends god out with no major injuries. Don't worry man, if you stuff is damaged, the schools insurance should cover the damages or if your parents have homeowners insurance.

It's weird, because it often feels like college campuses are invisible and then just like that, a tornado rips through one, taking out almost everything. My campus is in earthquake zone, and I can only hope nothing this horrible happens to it.
