And as long as it isn't Dead Rising, the whole process of "Indizierung" and potentially following confiscation has been handled rather well.

@Iceman346: Well, technically, Hessen still has the death penalty, but as federal law breaks state law, they can't use it. Bavaria also had the death penalty in its constitution until only a few years ago.

And games are NEVER censored by the government. At least not yet. We'll see what happens if people like Günther Beckstein have their way and banninate everything that isn't good for people according to the Roman Catholic Church (though, funny enough, Beckstein is protestant).

And yes, nazi symbols in games aren't allowed because they aren't viewed as art here. That's a kinda stupid ruling which will hopefully fall at some time in the future. Movies with such symbols, regardless of the movie content, are allowed, my german DVD Box of Indiana Jones includes all Swastikas ;)

Yes there is no capital punishment here in germany (and in my opinion thats the right thing) but your 15 years maximum isn't completely correct. In extreme cases criminals can be held in prison for additional time or even indefnitely.

Regarding game censoring: what marcel said is correct, mostly games aren't censored by the government, they get an age rating from the german USK and if the publisher isn't happy with the rating they change the game. It's true that violent game often get no rating at all which makes them fair game for the BPjM who can put games on an index. Media which is "indiziert" may not be advertised and most big stores won't order it because they aren't allowed to put it on the shelves. But those games can still be sold through online retailers with age confirmation of the buyer (has to be 18+).

The only real censoring that is happening here is when a game is confiscated. This doesn't happen very often but still more often than I'd like. The last games that were confiscated are Dead Rising and Manhunt 1 (nothin in between those releases, so it's really rare). Such games may not be sold by german retailers at all, the only way to get them here is to order from one of the neighbouring countries. Private persons are still allowed to own the games *strokes his copy of Dead Rising* but selling them is completely forbidden.

So another game gets it's violence toned down for the German market to ensure steady sales here. Not exactly "fresh" news. But for me the article and its comments prove two things:

1) Germany is the chief culprit for any occasion of a less bloody video game, especially if a publisher decides to do something like releasing the Japanese version for all PAL regions. But since we were historically connected to Japan, the blame must be all well deserved

2) "game" and "censored" is directly linked to "lack of nipples" in the common sense of US gamers

However you are the one living in the country so obviously you know more than me, but keep in mind that things are relative to each of us, whats a lot of censoring for me could be nothing for you, and vice versa.
