My girlfriend spent silly money to get me the Playstation version of Symphony of the Night (special edition w/artbook and cd) and I've many a time bid on Panzer Dragoon Saga. But she'd run away if I spent anything like this on one game. The whole sealed up thing wouldn't appeal to me either I like my games to be played. I'm so careful with them but I'll still enjoy them.

Unless someone else hasn't mentioned it... but don't these old SNES carts have an internal battery for saving the data?

I know I came back to play some old SNES games like Chrono Trigger, "FFIII", and Legend of Zelda: LTTP, and found all my save games gone. I shrugged and restarted them on an emulator instead where my data can be permanently saved. I mean having the original cartridges is nice and all, but I can hook up a controller to my PC and have the same experience plus be able to save states whenever I want.

Panzer Saga is only like a $100 on eBay, just beacause it's not that well-known. When you figure new games today are $60-70 it's not that big a deal.

I got my copy of CT just last year for $40. Any spending $1,000 on a not-hard-to-find game needs a punch-out. Maybe if there were like 50 copies of the game in the wild or something...

Sealed games are a complete waste of money. The only reason that they're worth so much is because people think they're worth that much (the same with anything else that's expensive). But, sealed games will eventually just wind up in museums or library collections (no joke), and they will have to _open_ them to catalogue their contents. So, the only purpose a sealed game serves is to keep the contents from being tampered with or altered. Also, the gases that the plastic on the game give off over time actually warp and harm the game box and probably the contents.

Again, complete waste of money, don't buy sealed games.

I once had a sealed Mega Man X3. Sold it two years ago for around 350 dollars. I also saw a sealed FFIII go for 980 or so on ebay probably 3 years back. Sealed fan favorite games like FF and Mega Man fetch a rediculous amount of money.

You can sigh and be sad and do whatever you want about this topic and collectibles. You obviously can't understand what collectibles really are. I myself can't see how baseball cards or other colletibles like rare Magic the Gathering cards that are just there for viewing behind a glass or some much more useless thing sold in ebay for thousands (some maybe millions). These things are bought for preservation on museums maybe, or some for personal collections for just display without any use. That's just how it is. I kind of think of collectors as "I have this and you don't" type of people. That's just how it is. You can call it stupid, but there are people who just love to collect things whether they make tons of money or not.

Mm I think the most I'd pay for a game would probably be $100 or so for a copy of Metal Wolf Chaos for the xbox. Shame I never caught onto the game until it was out of print, and that it was super hard looking for it in (2) 12-day periods in the Spring in Japan two years in a row...

..Maybe I should check the newsgroups and grab an image of the game instead. Bah.

But yeah, the X2 bid seems a bit high. Guess you really need to be a collector for this kind of stuff (since they already released the Megaman X collection for the PS2). I think I liked X2 because it was the only X game I never was able to buy. Got X1 when I got my SNES in Kindergarten or first grade, played someone else's X2 (and regretted not getting it for myself), got X3 in 3rd grade... and yeah. On the PS1, I only had a handful of games, most of them being X4-X6, the Megaman Legend series (1 and 2, including the Tron Bon game), and FFIV.

Alright this was all a worthless rant. rawr.

And if it were an opening bid, it probably wouldn't sell. Successful auctions generally have low (or at least reasonable) opening bids, and quite a few bidders.

I'm actually hopefully going to teach a class soon about the history of movies, tv shows, and video games. To that end ebay is great. I am starting to boost up my collection so I have more things to show my students when I get the class going. I just bought a copy of E.T. for Atari for that class. Good news is the game was only $.01. The bad news was that the shipping and handling was $3.99. But at least the game was in fantastic condition. Not bad for one of the most important games in history.

I can't see ANY game, no matter how great it is (and Chrono Trigger is quite great), being worth its weight in gold.

Also, I just got a copy of Megaman X2 the other day for $20. Sure, it's just the Game Pak, but that's fine with me, as I intend on playing it.

I live between two 6,000-10,000 populated towns. plus Fort Wayne is only about 30 munites from my house, durring the winter i go to Pawnshops in Fort Wayne 2 or 3 times a month, and durring the summer i go to garage sales every weekend. @Shindokie: Look at garage sales this summer, and at Pawn shops!! I buy at those types of places and then resell on E-bay. you can find games for tons cheaper than E-Bay at places like that.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, and it's probable that noone really cares since this is par for the course with game boxes for the time...

...but did anyone else notice that the back of the X-2 box refers to ALL Maverick bosses as X-Hunters, instead of just Serges, Violen, and Agile?

As a big fan of the boss fights in X-2 (best boss fights, although still not the best game), I find this stupidly annoying.

Having the english version of Valkyrie profile for PSX is still good compared to the PSP version because the psp version doesn't use true widescreen(they cut off the top portion of the game to fit it on the widescreen.
Plus there is the anime cutscenes and the item arrangement option that you got. I would say the PSX version of valkyrie profile will continue to go up even with the re issue of the game on psp. There are people out there who want originals, as this Chrono Trigger auction shows.

@Oceaniax: there's a difference between factory seal and shrink wrapping. Generally seals are cellophane, folded on the edges, whereas shrink wrap is...plastic wrap that shrinks. Now, some games come sealed with shrink wrap, but back then if I remember correctly there would have been a seam that ran across the middle of the back of the box, along with the stanrd side seams. It's very hard to do with a standard shrink wrap machine.

Most I spent for a game was the $170 for Rock Band. I hold that as the most I'll spend for any game. Anymore than that to me is insane. Especially considering that Chrono Trigger is likely to show up on the virtual console someday.

While I couldn't pay that much for a game...probably ever (I'm fine with mint book and box and all that), I can totally understand why people buy things for a "collectible" purpose. I have a few pretty awesome collections, but the most expensive game I ever bought (old school, not new games) was Lunar:Silver Star Story (with guide and puppet) on Ebay for like 100 bucks after shipping. After that I picked up Lunar 2 for like 65, which I still think was a good deal.
But, what really kills me are the guides. Working Designs guides are amazing, the detailing reminds me of DoubleJump (the guys who make the Disgaea guides). But the CE guide for Lunar? Minimum price is usually around 40, and while I want it REALLY REALLY bad I just can't afford it right now. Same with the Persona: Revelations guide. I didn't even know one existed. Apparently they do, and they're like 70 bucks and up. I want that just to round out my Persona collection, but they only pop up every once in a while and it gets kinda ridiculous when they do.
But yes...collecting...so addicting. I have several games that are sealed and I have no idea when I'll ever get to play them, but I'm hoping that even if I never do get that chance that they'll maybe be worth money at some point. And I think that's the biggest thing that sucks you in. Knowing you have something that not everyone else does.

@DeLoRtEd1: It's idiotic because he's paying money for a box wrapped in plastic. It functionally, is not Chrono Trigger. If you're not going to open and play it, it is a box wrapped in plastic. Boxes wrapped in plastic have the value of plastic and cardboard. Contents of boxes wrapped in plastic have value. No matter what game or toy or comic book, it's idiotic to spend money on something that you have no intention of using. It's just as idiotic if the chump has $1.2 billion, or spent every last penny he has on it. It's a dumb purchase.

there this digusting little weekend flea market near where I live, I went in a few weeks ago because it had been about 10 years since I went in there... it still looks like 1993 threw up all over the place... but there were several stalls selling nothing but old video games, mostly NES and SNES, and I did see a few factory sealed copies of who knows what (I was trying to avoid getting tetanus) for SNES

it was pretty much that, and a lot of bongs, for some reason...

I was too young to know that Atlus only manufactures a minimal amount of the games they publish for the US. I rented Ogre Battle for the SNES like 10 times from my local Blockbuster.

I am so angry now that I never went out and bought it. If I had the money I probably would pay over $1K for it sealed, then immediately open it and play for two weeks straight when it arrived. This is honestly the only game for a system that I owned that I didn't buy, but desperately still want.

I think Witz was referring to the difficulty though. But that was my personal problem with the item world. >_>

Of course I did this for quite some time, so right now Laharl is beating faces in with a level 70 or so Apocalypse axe...which is the last Axe in the game. (yes, I use an axe. I have Laharl at around 200 mastery for all weapons expect guns methinks, so I swap accordingly) Axes ftw.

Also, I suggest you try winning some difficult Dark Assemblies. They may seem a thousand percent impossible, but with the power of throwing them into each other, its a breeze. Sorta. Its still pretty hard actually, heh.

If you throw an enemy into another enemy, the higher level one deletes the other and gains its levels. So if you throw someone who voted for you that is level 300 into someone that is level 200 and foolish enough to vote no for the sale of sneakers in shops, you now have a level 500 person who would love to buy a new pair of boots.

And finally, those "residents" in the items you see affect the stats of those items. You'll see an orb next to the stat they affect. When you go in the item world, you will randomly see these characters. They will attack anyone who gets near them, but if you kill them you will be able to transfer them from item to item. You can also combine the same types together. I recommend you get a level 300 statistician for as many characters as you can, as that gives you +300% experience for each enemy. (sorry, can't go past 400% exp mate XD)

Makes leveling quite easier, and also makes reborn-ing characters a lot less difficult to deal with.

The most I ever payed for a videogame was $100 for Valkyrie Profile on PS1. I was completely filled with contempt at Square-Enix for announcing the PSP version of it a few months later, but I don't regret buying it at that price. It was very rare to find that game, I really wanted it and when I had an opportunity to buy it, I did. If people want something bad enough, no price they pay for their object of interest surprises me.

I hope Chrono Trigger's new owner is overjoyed by their purchase and has no regrets for the price they payed, I know I didn't. Let's just hope it is the actual game inside if he/she decides to open the box.

I'm going to assume that this person obviously has more then enough money to cover this investment, but still $1,000 for a sealed SNES game is a bit much. It's not like it had a limited print run, isn't available for much cheaper on the PS1 or for free if you're into the ROM scene.

It's a game sealed in plastic. I just don't understand the value in that.

If I had the money, I would have bought this game for an insane amount in an instant! This game has incredible sentimental value to me. I was very moved by the story and how spirited these characters were! I am also a big Sci-fi fan and was always fascinated by the idea of time travel. This is one of the first RPG's that made me cry, the other one being Final Fantasy VI.

I must have played through it about 10 times, 6 of those were on the Super Nintendo (you have to play the game a second time with the stats you beat it with to get all of the endings). one time on the PSX release, and about 3 times via emulators.

It is a great game, and I truly believe that its worth the grand spent!

@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term: Starts your character off at level 1 with improved stats, assuming you spend more mana to reborn them. For 5000 mana (easier to get than it sounds) you get a 10 stat point bonus to mess around with. Plus whatever bonus you get for reborn-ing them.

If you wanna be too strong for your own good fast in Disgaea, I suggest that when you start the game, unequip the Imperial Seal on Laharl and get your ass in the item world (into the Imperial Seal is what I'm implying). And good luck. :D

@DeLoRtEd1: how can you find joy in paying 1200 bucks for a game. sure it's not open but if you open it why not just paid much, much less for an opened copy or the PS1 port then your not out 1200 bones. and you'll have just as much fun playing the game as if you spent all that cash

Love that show, I still have a recording of what to me was the rarest episode they made cause it was barely replay or at least I never catch it when they did. Which is the one mocking James Bond as Dexter has to infiltrated the place where the process film roll to keep his laboratory a secret...LOVE that episode.

I've always regarded Chrono Trigger to be one of those expensive used games. Even back in the N64 days a used copy of Chrono Trigger would run you 40-60 dollars in the states. Now I see stuff like this and my mind is just boggled. Especially since I can buy the Japanese version of the game (opened, however) at my local Geo for about 250 yen. They have a stack almost as tall as I am.

I guess this is why I never was any good at collecting basebal cards either. :/

@Mohrdikai: Not much really, japanese version of the games don't go for as much as the american version for some reason. Just search and you'll see, the NTSC/U version of Valkyrie Profile for the PSone goes for over 100 dollars, while the Japanese version can go for just 20 dollars.
