i could give a big long speech about game formulas and rehashing and whether it makes a game's sequels stable or boring....

...but I won't. Most people's minds are made up already and won't be swayed by my two cents. So, I'll say this:

I loved the first two Smash games, and from what I've seen so far, this one looks to give me more of what I love. I will be waiting to play the damn thing before I give it a final word on the new features, but until then I remain cautiously optimistic, despite what others say.

evilada

@FunKrusher: "I love how people offer their opinions up and get all bent out of shape based on other opinions."

There is NO DEBATE HERE over opinion. The "debate" is over basic reading comprehension and fact.

Two (possibly three) fanboys accused me of getting something wrong, which I did not get wrong. They did that for no reason other than THEIR OPINION that Super Smash Brothers is the most awesome game in the universe.

Here's a fact: Calling me a jackass is a personal attack.

If you had a VALID REASON for calling me a jackass, that would be fine. But you do not. You do not have any basis for that assertion, because you don't even know the difference between fact and opinion. You are demonstrably a moron. How do I know that? Because I just demonstrated it.

If you want to dispute my opinion about the quality of Wii graphics, go for it. I welcome disagreement on matters of opinion. If you want to misread and willfully disregard the facts in order to say that I've done something I did not do, then you can go fuck yourself.

Case in point. Jackass saying: "This game looks ASS" that's in you're opinion moron.

Of course someone who doesn't agree is going call you out on that.

Plus that's in you're opinion. My bad I forgot we're on the internet. Where opinions are paraded as facts or as gospel directly from the mouth of teenage jesus. And anyone not in agreement with said opinion poster is either a fanboy, moron, ass clow, un-intelligent, or all the above.

@MechanisMs: Go back and read my comment again. Actually, you know what? I'll copy-and-paste it here:

There's something like an "uncanny valley" for 3D, and Wii graphics fall dead into it. I almost feel like I could reach into that game and pull out individual pieces--like there's a 3D element here, and another here, and the character portraits are another element. It looks like cut-and-paste crap. It looks like next gen--if last gen was POS pre-rendered 3D arcade games from the early 90s.

Follow along with me, step by step.

There's something like -- That's your first clue. Not "exactly like." Not "is." "Something like," as in <blink>I'M MAKING AN ALLUSION.</blink>

"There's something like" ... an "uncanny valley" -- There's your second clue. Quotation marks. As in, "That topic--I'm alluding to it."

Example: It's something like "collateral damage" when I humiliate someone who probably didn't mean any harm, simply because two fanboys angered me.

Fanboy response: "Gawd. Collateral damage is when civilians are killed in war, dumbass. Leave commenting to the educated people. SSMB looks amazing!"

Are you with me now?

Now, I'll explain the allusion for those hard of thinking.

"Uncanny Valley" is to "humans" as "Wii graphics" are to Next Gen Graphics

The graphics look 3D all right--they look shiny and rounded--but they don't reach a level that actually looks good. Wii graphics are like those creepy mannequins associated with the uncanny valley concept (not too popular a concept among serious people, BTW) in that they're a kind of sub-normal simulacrum of good computer graphics. They're like good computer graphics as reflected in a funhouse mirror. They're like good computer graphics as painted by Christy Brown.

Fanboy response: "Gawd. Don't you even know what simulacrum means? SSBM rules!"

Don't ever rely on other people's analysis. If you aren't sure whether a word was used correctly or not do your own research and read the comment more carefully, because on the Internet, nine times out of ten, the person "correcting" people is a dumbass.

Now that we've gone on this journey together, I expect evidence that you have learned something. I expect you to post a comment, briefly stating (more or less), "I was wrong."

ablemancain

@DrFresh: I'm pretty sure you're a goddamn fanboy.

There's nothing I hate more than being "corrected" on something I know more about than the person "correcting" me.

There should be a rule here: If you "correct" someone and are wrong, you should be banned. Immediately fucking banned--and ass raped. That should also go for anyone who refuses to admit he is wrong when presented with clear evidence.

@Kotaku

Put a link below each comment that reads: "I challenge this comment." A sub-thread then opens, in which the challenger and original poster state their evidence. An objective (stressing objective--that's a rare thing) third party then evaluates the evidence and bans one of the users. If it's a toss up--if a clear winner cannot be determined--the challenger gets banned. Putting a system like this in place would end 90% of all bullshit "debates" that never should have started in the first place.

Note that this system should apply only to evidence-based claims. Anyone who formally challenges an opinion or a morality claim should immediately be banned.

If possible, both parties should have one arm strapped to a table and the other arm strapped to an axe.

ablemancain

Final Smashes are based on the "Smash Ball" item, and yes they can be toggled off during play, just like a regular item.

you can also toggle on/off the pity smash option for players that are losing horribly, albeit it would be pretty good if you're playing against younger siblings and the like.

@Lain
Yeah, i figured ablemancain was using an incorrect interpretation of the "uncanny valley" phenomenon..

really, it's much more applicable to something like Mass Effect, where the human-ness of the characters is almost frightening to the point of dehumanizing them. Not in a game where you know that every character is a franchise videogame character and fights with toonified and clearly exaggerated graphics (which may be polarizing to people who dislike the style with a passion enough to commit linguistic confusion)

MechanisMs

AN EXPLANATION ON THE UNCANNY VALLEY... for Ablemancain..

1. HYPOTHESIS

Mori's hypothesis states that as a robot is made more humanlike in its appearance and motion, the emotional response from a human being to the robot will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a point is reached beyond which the response quickly becomes that of strong repulsion. However, as the appearance and motion continue to become less distinguishable from a human being, the emotional response becomes positive once more and approaches human-to-human empathy levels.

This area of repulsive response aroused by a robot with appearance and motion between a "barely-human" and "fully human" entity is called the uncanny valley. The name captures the idea that a robot which is "almost human" will seem overly "strange" to a human being and thus will fail to evoke the empathetic response required for productive human-robot interaction

2.

THEORETICAL BASIS

The phenomenon can be explained by the notion that, if an entity is sufficiently non-humanlike, then the humanlike characteristics will tend to stand out and be noticed easily, generating empathy. On the other hand, if the entity is "almost human", then the non-human characteristics will be the ones that stand out, leading to a feeling of "strangeness" in the human viewer. In sum, a robot stuck inside the uncanny valley is no longer being judged by the standards of a robot doing a good job at pretending to be human; but is instead being judged by the standards of a human doing a terrible job at acting like a normal person.

Another possibility is that affected individuals and corpses exhibit many visual anomalies similar to the ones seen in humanoid robots and so elicit the same alarm and revulsion. The reaction may become worse with robots since there is no overt reason for it to occur, whereas distaste for the sight of a corpse is a feeling easy to understand.

It is possible that the Uncanny Valley effect evolved as a means of instinctively identifying and ostracizing human individuals carrying illnesses or mental problems that might render interaction (specifically breeding and long-term care) detrimental to the group.

Next time.. please.. if you dont know what you are speaking about.. and it was just something you read in a magazine or heard some people talking about it.. IE: the employees.. or the kid who just hangs out all day... dont be spreading innacurate information.

Leave it to people who are educated.

Also, I've played Super Mario Galaxy and therefore lost all enthusiasm for the Wii. The controller is unintuitive and bothersome. Wii made me look forward to a lot of potential games--games that have not and probably will not ever be made. The thought of playing Smash Brothers with that controller makes the vein in my temple bounce, and if there's "waggle" control I'm going to kill somebody.

ablemancain

@Blinkstale: What spoilers? Shit, if youre gonna be that anal about it then just dont read the damn post.

Anyway, i also noticed how the stages in every vid seem to be just a simple platform infront of a moving background, which is quite disappoint imo. Would have much preferred stages with more thought put into the design.

Thrillhaus

@EnigmaNemesis: But with fighters, what more is there to do? I mean, the gameplay is essentially the fighting. If the fighting is good, there's no reason to tinker with it. If the fighting is bad, well.. then the game generally sucks, and only an improvement would be worth playing. I think that's why you see a lot of options in this one, making your own map and a more in-depth single player mode. The fighting itself is actually very good. Simple to pick up and play, but a lot of ins and outs you find out as you get to know all the fighters.

Not that I'm going to convince you anything otherwise, I'm just saying that... the genre as a whole can't really go anywhere. It's sorta like football sports games, unless the rules of football themselves dramatically change at some point, video game reenactments themselves can't really be much different outside of the roster. Which understandably I could see why you wouldn't want to play them. Fighting games nowadays are pretty much for fighting game fans. If you've got buddies that play fighting games (Or with good netplay, you don't even need that..) then you can usually have a fun time with it, but I don't ever see there being much of a huge revolution in the genre anytime soon.

Ampillion, Dayman.
For me personally, I feel this is nothing different than the game before it, with a new coat of paint. Sure most fighters suffer from this, but I am not commenting on them at this time, I am on this one in it's thread. If I feel the need to comment on others in that way, I will. If I choose to ignore it, then fine as well.

I don't need to prove myself to the rabid silicon worshipers. Like I said, I have my own convictions as to why. And I let one loose. To me personally, fighters are more bland when they are more of the same, than most other genres.

EnigmaNemesis

@3/9/2008+7 days=1 helluva week!!: Honestly around here, I don't think it's the liking or disliking, it's the wording of how you state something or the way you do it. Someone coming around into one thread asking why anyone likes it or saying they weren't a fan of prior installments is no biggie. Someone coming into every story to make some sort of snide remark about the game though, is the no-no. It's being respectful of people liking a quality game that matters, not bashing something just because.

Ampillion, Dayman. Being that this is a Nintendo first-party game, I'm surprised I've seen this much fan restraint. I just remember the blood-bath called Link's crossbow training. I wasn't even allowed to not like it :( Someone even made a dig at my mama! LOL... it wasn't that bad but people need to stop the reflex attacks on people who don't like brawl. There's far more people out there who can flying-flip about brawl then actually care. Me? I think it's cute :)

@EnigmaNemesis: Eh. It's the nature of fighters. Most all fighting games seem to go through the motions. They give you the original. If the fighting system is good (or the game becomes popular) you usually just get more fighters/levels in the next iteration. Then more options as you go into the sequels. If the fighting system is poor (or just not popular enough) you get an overhaul of the fighting style or some addition to it. Or, you get huge tit physics a la DoA, to give you something to look at when you stop caring about the terrible gameplay, I guess.

Ampillion, Dayman.
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: Agreed.
Looks like a lot of the stages are just a platform flying through some themed space. Lame. My favorite stages in Melee are Hyrule temple, Mushroom kingdom, Termina and Corneria. The more complex it is to navigate the more tactical the gameplay becomes.
