The rarest cart he has is apparently his sealed copy of FINAL FIGHT GUY. He's been offered $2,000US for it by private collectors...

I'm no sure why FF:Guy is so rare--something about it not being available for retail purchase in North America... Not exactly sure...

Nope. Only way I'd pay that much money for a game is if it were new and came with some crazy accessory (i.e. Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc.)

Again, I'm interested in PLAYING games not COLLECTING them (granted, I never sell the games I like, either... So there's a little bit of collecting going on, too). And if I paid MORE for a game than what it costed when it was new, I'd feel ripped off and that I could never open it. No matter how good the game was.

After that I got myself 2 old Nes systems and mega drive which I still own but they are far from mint condition, still I got a lot of gems like punch out and ducktales etc with old NFL games and stuff like sonic for the mega drive. I will never sell them, ever, only thing I miss from old systems now would be a Snes and an Amiga. I hope they add more VC games especially the not so popular ones, the more niche and lower the prices on them. I would like to play north & south again and the chip n dales and Faxanadu to name a few :D

(a total of 15000,- was stolen but if i would have gotten the real price for it than i would have so mush more) in the end the insurance company f****d me after all and they dint pay more than 5000,- because suddenly they said it was a collection and for collections cound different rules meening that i was not insured at all so they payed only the costs for my TV, home cinema set and the damage that was done in and at the home.

word of advice if you have more than 1 console and more than 10 games for it. get it taxated and insured properly! please don't make the same mistake that i did!!

I even bought the strategy guide and cut out all the toriyama drawings and put them up on my wall too. I beat the game several times and then lent it to a friend and never got it back. Am I bitter? No. I played it to its fullest potential and had no need to hold onto it. When I want to play it again, I just play the rom on my pc. Anybody who clamors for the original cartridge (which would fudge up after years of play anyways) is completely unrelatable to me, and I hope they can use their money to buy a ps3 or a killer arcade cabinet, and play the game as a rom as it should be played.

Squaresoft Japan requested evermore to be stopped in development/sales but so much money was already spent making the game that they ignore squaresoft of japan. Thus they never gave the rights to have it localized to us. I may be wrong, as some say they stopped the localization because nintendo and Square in redmond WA were busy with mario rpg and that Seiken Densetsu 3 had too many bugs to fix. But the former seems to be the likely that happened.

Thats one of the reasons that the vastly inferior game Secret of Evermore, based on basically the same fundamental engine as SoM, is even more mind-numbingly simple, they took the already "dumbed-down" SoM framework and made it even less challenging to navigate and conquer. The only challenge to that game was the few stages (such as the one at the end) that required a long, long time wandering to chart out and find all you needed to find. I'd prefer enemies with bite to aimless wandering, thats just me.

That said, what I really would like on the VC is both SoM and Seiken Densetsu 3, there is an existing IPS translation so it shouldn't be that hard....;)

SoM has a level of replay value few other games, then or now, can match .

The music was not the same and the sound effects too. You did yourself a big favor by buying the original. If you even look at how well the story was written compared to everything else before it then that just shows how incredible it was. Nothing even came close to character development; you actually care about every single character in the game ('cept lucca...nobody likes her story...) The music from the game in particular is constantly being remixed on ocremix and is probably second only to the FF series. Visuals are still pretty great considering it came out so long ago (the game would be right at home on a ds). Anyways, there are countless posts just like right here on the internet so it's not surprising that over a decade later the game still has a dedicated following.

And for people who are saying games should be opened to be played, I got my 1st copy to play (if I dont play it on the emulator). Some things are worth so much that you shoudln't open them anymore. I even say to some people that Transformer toys that are bought and never opened is a stupid thing to do. But if the value of what you buy or currently own has shot up in value, you would be an idiot for opening it to take off %80 of the value.

@JerrD74: Not quite. Obviously Sakaguchi runs Mistwalker, and he was one of the major people in the 'Dream Team' that developed Chrono Trigger, but the majority of the people who developed CT moved on to Xenogears. After that they had a falling out with Square (who obviously hadn't merged with Enix yet at that point) and formed Monolith Soft, who made the Xenosaga trilogy and the two Baten Kaitos games for Namco before they were bought by Nintendo sometime last year. So technically, the majority of the people who made Chrono Trigger work for Nintendo now. They're working on Disaster: Day of Crisis, but also I hear they have two unannounced RPGs in development (what they are, and whether they're for the DS or the Wii, I have no idea). The point is, if Square Enix wanted to rerelease Chrono Trigger or make a new Chrono game they would have to go through both Nintendo and Microsoft, neither of which Squeenix is on particularly good terms with (the former because of the transition of Final Fantasy to the Playstation rather than the N64, and the latter because Squeenix isn't supporting the 360 very much because of its poor sales in Japan).

...God, I know way too much trivia about this stuff.

He's right. That's exactly how games were wrapped back in the SNES days. Looks legit. It should not be opened. We should have at least 1 copy of every game in a museum never opened. Or at least in the hands of someone! They can play via used, PS1, or its future release, or... rom. I bought CT the day it released for $95 before tax at TRU. Sold it years later to GS where the assistant manager paid me under the table for it even thought that was against store policy. I got cash instead of credit ;). Then I rebought it a few years later mint & stupidly sold it again to GS for a decent amount of money.

I can appreciate the pure craftsmanship in a Patek Philippe watch that makes it a truly beautiful object, but cartridges are mass produced and don't have that sense of quality. Some people appreciate these sorts of things. I'm not one for keeping things sealed and unused, but I enjoy collecting Leica cameras and Gibson guitars that I know will hold their values, meanwhile I find pleasure in owning products of that quality and rarity, which I can imagine is similar for the hardcore game collector.

The best, though, was the moms who would come in with a huge box of boxed NES and SNES stuff and scoff when our trade-in value came out to about $11. I would "go on break" and make a deal that we were both very happy with...they got $25 cash and I got MINT systems and complete copies of every cool game you can remember, including Chrono Trigger, Earthbound w/ book, the Zelda games, and on and on...back then I was collecting, now that I'm broke I realize I was investing! Of course, if I could afford to not sell them I could be making 10X as much in the future.

If its the later buy them quickly. There were only ever 30,000 copies made in North America. 6000 for launch, then 12,000 more and 12,000 more at a later date.

If you can get a ton of these you'll make a TON of money.

It is an awesome game and is one of the first games I can remember using 4 discs.

Is really not that hard to find 'factory seal' copy of any game in ebay actually and this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that some games reach this price. The original Zelda for the NES goes for 800.00 if is factory seal. Just look it up and you'll see.

Sadly, this means a Chrono Trigger downloadable reissue is unlikely, since various members of the Chrono Trigger team now have differing format loyalties. So sad. :(
