Now they are addressing the smoke issues with free repairs. It took Microsoft close to a year to deal with RROD and Sony had 10 class-action lawsuits on court dockets before they started to fix DRE free. That's a pretty damned fast turn around time and as for people saying that just because it's Nintendo, people are giving them a pass, it's simply not true. People know that Nintendo will address system issues within record time and that builds a whole shitload of customer goodwill that is renewed when, shockingly, Nintendo proves them right and addresses it. Microsoft has little to none, not only for RROD but the nightmare getting a RRODed system not only fixed, but keeping it working and the PS3 simply doesn't have a large enough install base for any issues to be noted, that and so far the system seems built pretty damn well, that and the fact that the rotating skus seem to remove any older hardware that could have issues, but Sony's massive PR's blunders and DRE issues have left a bad taste in the mouths of many.

Nintendo gets a pass because they deal with the issues, Sony and Microsoft take much longer, thus they don't get a pass.

i didnt know what i said was considered 'trolling' so to speak. Read my previous post. I have owned a wii since the second day it was released in the UK. Ive owned a Gamecube, 'Nintendo 64' SNES and my brother Brought a NES in 1986. But i also own PS1,2 & 3, and Both xbox consoles. And im sorry if you dont like to hear it, but i am telling it how it is from my opinion. Don't you honestly think that it is very unpractical that you have to send in your wii just because there is an amount of smoke in the room? Im not a smoker so dont think im angry because of this. But imagine you went to a bar to watch a football/soccer game (before the smoking ban) and the TV just kick out because of the amount of smoke in the bar? what would you say? you'd curse the TV and call it cheap. So why should we treat computers in the same way.. Im not just talking about the wii here. The RROD and the old PS2 are guilty of this too.
So please tell me, if im trolling, who's 'mythical side' Am i on?? Im a games player and, i dont care what system any game is on. if, its quality, ill get it.. To be honest all this flaming stuff just makes me laugh!!

My point exactly.... Nintendo seem like the only company that are allowed to rehash and rehash and make crap yet nobody..Im talking about game journalist too, seem to mind. I remember playing Mario 1 a long time ago.. great game.. i remember playing Mario World..great game again..Mario64..great.. Mario Galaxy. The one thing about all these games that get overlooked by everybody is that since the first game (apart from Mario USA & sunshine) the formula hasn't changed much story wise. but it seems to be accepted as just another Mario game... i remember talking to my Friend that was complaining that Rachet & Clank was 'more of the same' and he prefered mario. I laughed in his face. At least they are trying to do something different.. Same old princess story..Sony's first/second party devlopers are at least trying new angles with Story to keep us to the franchises. MS do not really have a platform star so to speak, But they do have the Master Chief. And With Halo 3 how many people were angry that it was 'much of the same' and Halo 2.5? But were happy to Play Mario 15? or whatever number we are on now? Also look how many games use the main Nintendo mascots... Dr Mario,Mario Golf, Paper Mario, Mario RPG, He has appeared in over 200 games! and call me old fashioned, but i get angry that games fly off the shelf, even if it is obvious crap, just because Mario is on it.. It saddens me. 1: Because all those great games from other less established developers with less public awareness slip under the radar. and 2: Nintendo see this method works and then churns even more trash out. What next. Super Mario cross-stitch? Ask yourselves this. Do you think that if Smash Bros didnt have any of these characters it would have even gotten half the media attention amd buzz?
The simple fact is that Nintendo for whatever reason are allowed to almost do what they want without much mainstream complaints. After their 'Dark period' of the late 90s until last year, you'd think they would learn a few things...
yes Nintendo will help fix things for free, but at the end of the day, they shouldnt have to be fixing any thing for such a trival reason.

ok, a redesing every 6 months was rather an exaggeration, but i tell you this: nintendo are to blame for the fad of redesigning their consoles - it all started with the gameboy, so many different gameboys... then gba, and others started jumping on the badwagon. and now there's the infernal multi-sku ways (and to N's credit they are staying out of that one) but i still see it as having been started by them.
it will be interesting to see if they do a wii-lite given it can't really get much more lite or "stylish" (i don't personally subscribe to the white plastic 'applemac' book of style, but fashion is dictated by the masses, so that's what is stylish)

while i read through the internet i see a great deal more love for nintendo than for ms or sony, and to be honest my natural instinct is to disagree with public opinion. yes, it's a personal thing, but there's so much that nintendo get away with just because they're nintendo which others get flamed for. people are quite happy to see brain training at the top of charts for weeks and weeks - IT'S A CRAP GAME!! - but no one complains. mario and sonic at the olympics... more trash. nintendo consoles (and yes, not really due to nintendo themselves) are being flooded with junk, but i can't think of more than about 2 actual worthwhile games on the wii.

i think it would be interesting if mass effect had come out on wii, it would probably have been given game of the year, given 10/10 in reviews, loved on all over... i can see it now. and conversely, imagine playing smg on the 360... not quite a 10 now.
i'm just sick and tired of people being swept up in hype and internet vagaries.

but mark my words, i love my cube, and if nintendo ever fall out of favour i'll be their champion again.

oh, and yeah, ms did charge for the downtime, but how many games have you played on the wii network? wasn't everyone saying 'i would rather pay for the psn if it were as good as live' a while back? they rarely said it about nintendo's online shambles. mind you i'm glad people get miffed at the friend codes thing, daft system.

Charge too much? CHeapest of the three consoles.

They don't ever drop the price? THe DS has gotten cheaper and they don't need to drop the Wii's price for a very, very long time.

THey redesign every six months? I can only think of the GBA which has been redesigned 1 too many times. The DS got a smaller, lighter version, I don't see that as a problem.

They don't supply any shovelware, the third party developers do. If you play Nintendo first-party games you'd see that they are some of the best on the system.

I dunno what you mean really. They get shit on when they make a mistake just as Sony or MS do (maybe not as bad as MS though). I think the reason Nintendo appeals to so many people is because they are a video-game-only company so I can empathize with them more.

MS made you keep paying for the service even during the downtime, I think a free game is appropriate compensation. Generosity in selling their hardware cheaper than it costs to make? Do you remember how the PS3 sold when it was $700. What's that? that's right it didn't sell. It has nothing to do with generosity, it has to do with business. They sell their hardware at a price that is both profitable for them and helps with sales. If they cared about generosity and the such then MS would have fixed RRoD by now. I won't argue about Nintendo's online service because it is quite bad compared to Live and PSN, but you make Nintendo out to the Satan of gaming in comparison with Sony and MS and I just can't see any real reason in your post for it.

Yeah I hear ya, most of the time i try to "zero" muh hits as they say, but you should know with some of that one hitter quitter shit you just can't hold it in! hah, but in terms of the PS3 - I know the inside is pretty well sectioned off, it's not all really exposed like the PS2 was....so I think I should be alright...if not, I guess it is my fault....but designers should really be thinking of this shit...the stoners...the smokers....god dayum, we are people too!

i've never had a problem with dust etc on my dvd lens and i've got a laptop - the kind where the lens is in the tray, and gets exposed to the open air every time i open it... nintendo must have got some shonky parts if a bit of smoke can really stop them reading discs, even dual layer dvds.

personally i'm not happy with the nintendo hardware situation, they charge too much, they don't ever drop the price, they redesign every 6 months, they get massive props all over the internet just for being nintendo, they supply tons and tons of shovelware for their systems, they trounce any 3rd party devs - imagine if there was only one system and it was nintendo, there would be barely any development houses in the world making real games!

If you make an electronics device for a Japanese audience that can't handle smoke then that's a Nintendo problem not a people problem. I've been to Japan. They smoke more there than anywhere else I've ever been and they're not going to stop anytime soon. When I was flying back from Japan to New York some dude got arrested for smoking on the plane.

Not to divert the conversation but XBL did not encounter 'hiccups' it had a full-on crash.

While I don't think what they offered was unfair I do think it was a bit absurd to continue to bill customers (I was billed during the outage) for a service that wasn't functioning at the time. I also believe it was only logical for people to expect at least a free month from the ordeal ontop of anything else they were offered.

There have been reported problems with the lasers in some of the initial Wiis for a while now and up to this point there have been no DL-DVDs to fully test those lasers abilities.

Nintendo is just looking for a cheap way out of the situation that doesn't involve accepting responsibility for their actions. There are systems that eat dust much better than the Wii (which is almost a completely closed box, by far the most dust-safe of the bunch) that can read DL-DVDs (the STANDARD for everyone else) just fine. This is a problem with the lens itself. It will take people voiding their own warranty to prove it.

I'm not calling Nintendo evil for this practice as we've seen it from everyone else for years (360 RROD / PS2s TERRIBLE lens for over 1/2 their iterations) but we've learned to expect more from Nintendo.

I dunno, unlike the 360 or PS3 the Wii's disc drive is Slide-in and so is open to the particles in the air. I have heard that people in Japan can smoke quite voraciously so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the problem. The question is has anyone who doesn't smoke reported the problem still?

here's the bottom line, if you smoke heavily next to hardware that utilizes a disc reader, it's likely that your hardware is going to have some residual effects.

Nintendo is offering to clean your systems for FREE if they happen to be suffering from a problem as such. This has nothing to do with "next-gen" or "reliability"

it has to do with keeping your own damn care of your own damn console. For fucks sake.

I seriously doubt the problem is smoke - much more likely it's a manufacturing error in the discs or something wonky with the Wii that they're going to fix while the "clean" them.

If it is smoke, it's Nintendo's problem not the smoker's - this is hardly the first consumer device to use "ultra-sensitive dual-layer DVDs" after all, and lord knows my Aunt has had the same DVD player for 10 years and gone through 5475 packs in that time with nary a wheeze from the machine. Sure she's on O2 and has just 1/2 a lung left, but her DVD player is just fine.
