You should read the whole article. He basically calls for homosexuality to be outlawed (I guess it's a federal issue, now?), not so we can imprison all gays, just so that once someone becomes too 'flamboyant' we can smack them straight with the arm of the law. You know, for the children. Because if children see a 'Mary' at the park kiss another man, then of course society will crumble around us.

He also likes to tie everything about love into sex and genetic disposition. Claiming that all young adults have to resist biological urges (which is true), but he fails to mention that all young adults don't have to resist *emotional* urges. While we disparage kids from having sex, we don't disparage them from liking others or falling in love. It's encouraged in our society. When you deny love as a mitigating factor in someone's decision of who they want to spend their life with, who they want to be close to, and instead claim that everything is only an extension of some skewed animalistic sexual desire, you're invalidating gay people's intelligence and rationale. And then he turns around to tout that all actions should only be for the betterment of (his view of) society (or "THE STATE" mind you, which is only a few sentences away from good old fashioned Fascism), as if personal responsibility should be shirked in favor of societal responsibility. Even for those that the society openly rejects.

And his remark that "even as far back as the 1950s" young people found themselves experimenting in homosexual situations, is outright and incredibly LAUGHABLE. The 50's?! Try "since the beginning of humanity". But there's a lot more underneath that comment. It shows that Card is simply another aging white male who longs for the "glory days" of the 50's to return. When women stayed at home and kept their mouths shut, when [whisper]black people[/whisper] lived in 'their own' cities and had 'their own' facilities, when a gay person might be publicly lynched without consequence. [sarcasm]I think it's a time we'd all like to see return, right?[/sarcasm]

But it seems to me Card says only that complete belief in a religion such as Mormonism and the support of homosexuality do not agree. He has taken the Mormon religion as his absolute truth, and under that framework, homosexuality can be seen only as a sin. I slightly agree with him, since it makes little to no sense to claim to believe in a religion, but to adjust its teachings to fit your needs. The solution: leave the religion. Perhaps you shouldn't hate him for being a homophobe but instead for being a devout Mormon.

There's a BIG difference between DIRECTLY supporting/condoning someone with strong prejudices and indirectly supporting something by going to the gas station. We have no control how Oil Execs or Presidents make decisions that kill innocent civilians. You ignore that the real problem is with the people in those positions of power, whom you should be holding accountable for his/her decisions, not we general consumers. The only thing consumers can do is speak out against bigots and act to take away the financial leverage of bigots, which is what I'm assuming some readers are doing. The guy pushing the button by inciting prejudice or xenophobia is more directly responsible than people trying to survive financially by shopping at Wal-Mart.

In the Battle Room, your team does its best to act out orders while working around the barriers and such. Restrategizing could be done by shouting to those close around you, who would then repeat your orders. Obviously, this could add another variable, with orders possibly being botched like in the elementray school game "Telephone".

God, I really hope they add the mind game, that was a great part of the book, and I'd really love to play it...

The Ender saga is mainly focused on the scientific/philosophical, and I've always thought that a religious person would, to some extent, promote their religion in their story (or just not mention it). Maybe it's just me, but that comes off a little... disparaging.

And as for the, ah, strong opinions about homosexuality? From what I could make of it, he's just against hypocrites. He doesn't believe that homosexuals aren't people, just that if you're going to be part of a group that says it's a sin, you shouldn't practice it because, well, it's a sin. And as he says, "In my own view, I am walking a middle way, which condemns the sin but loves the sinner."

And all of that was a little bit long for such late inclusion into the discussion. But there it is anyway.

It _is_ possible to argue the merits of homosexuality, or lack thereof, from a civil standpoint. I don't know if it's ever been argued against in real life without religion becoming the primary point of discussion, but I've seen it happen in a historical-fictional setting (unfortunately, I can't recall the specific book, but I want to say it was Tower of Beowulf by Parke Godwin), where basically a post-tribal society has no issue at all with your choice of bedmates, but they _do_ expect you to procreate for the betterment of the community.

YES. Advent Rising was one of the most under-appreciated releases for the original Xbox. Loved that game, warts and all. For a game with such fundamental engine problems to still be so compelling and fun (even at 12fps!) is still something of a coup. It deserved to get more attention than it did. Now there's game that deserves a second life on Live... *and a sequel*.

Too bad that'll never happen. Let's hope this one ends up doing everything Advent Rising tried to do right.

I think the book is a wee bit overrated but, having said that, it was a good read and you definitely should check it out if you haven't.

I am a huge huge fan of Advent Rising, love that game. The story, the characters, the universe Card and the Mustard brothers created. I really dig Undertow ... I keep hearing how great the Ender books are and had been excited that a movie could actually happen. I was aware that the Mustards were Mormon, but read a great interview where that part of them is left at home when they go into work. I didn't realize Card was Mormon ... not that it matters and not where I am going with this ... but to find out here that Card is a very verbal and out spoken homophobe. wow ... I did a Google search and read his published essays on his views and I am just taken back. I kind of don't know how I feel now about my beloved "Advent". I do know I am not that terribly excited about anything Ender now. Is that wrong? Should I care about his beliefs, when his story telling prior to this knowledge was something I enjoyed? Hmmm ... I have a lot to think about.

Wasn't a commercial success, but that's the game that came out of Card and Chair working together. I have Mormon friends who also find him to be nutty. Go read the link I posted, you'll see what I'm talking about in his columns. I don't equate Mormonism itself with mental instability, just the statements of this one individual, over time.

I did _try_ to read the next two books in the series, never finished the third, I felt like he had already expended the most interesting parts of the idea framework in Book 1, which probably could have been 2 or 3 books more properly fleshed out. Just like RA Salvatore or Michael Moorcock, both novelists I've been highly recommended to and been disappointed by, he isn't a bad author, he just isn't exceptionally good in any way either.

I've also been told Card used to be a crime beat writer, and that his fascination with the powerlessness of children in the face of abuse comes from that, but again, combined with his weekly raving in my local free rag you'll forgive me if I form an opinion thats less than positive, maybe I've just watched too much SVU with my GF ;)

In Card' case, I really dug Ender's Game when I was a kid, and I still believe it's a great and complex young adult novel. I re-read it after finding out that OSC is a douchenozzle, but I can't really find any of his more reprehensible personal views represented in the text. The Ender's Game movie has been in development hell since at least 1998 and probably long before that. I can remember Card expressing his interest in having Jake Lloyd (yeah, the one from The Phantom Menace) play Ender.

I can't imagine a game based on the book being decent, but who knows. The book is all about story and character, there is very little action. It would've made a great point and click adventure game back in the day.

Not to mention his Ultimate Iron Man comic was not just lame, but rehashed the same "Children being abused and manipulated by their elders" theme that is at the heart of Ender's game. I won't go so far as to call Mr Card's obsession with abused children an indicator that he is also an abuser, but its unsettling, much like Mel Gibson's apparent fixation with torture.

Then there's the game options where one team could come into the room a full minute before the other team. 2 teams on 1. Upgrades like Enders little invisible rope. Freezing members in place and using them as shields. I can't wait.

Would be great if they had both levels, Battle School and Command School. Players could either have multiple characters or 'graduate' after X amount of points, wins, etc. I think multiple characters would be better, one for Battle School, another for Command School, rather than forcing players to move on to Command School. They definitely need to include support for 'clans'.

Fun idea, but i'm hesitant of what it would become. It could be a game that starts similarly to Bully, then going over to some "strategy FPS" (if that exists) and finally ending like a RTS.

If they're following the main story, then the game is already spoiled to those who've read the book. On the other hand, it could become a nice "mindf***" to those haven't read the book.

Or the game could be about some completely different character. My imagination is poor, so I still only imagine an FPS or spaceship fighting.

For this game, I don't expect much after playing Undertow, but I still have for a future Ender's series game that to be good.

Giant's Drink, RTS about all the space battles Ender led, Strategy game for the battles during the Shadow set of books, any of the early Bugger battles for any type of game, etc.

Hell, I would even take a Hotel Dusk type of game. One with Bean or Peter could do a lot.
