@Tonx: How do people make those special characters? Is there some way to import graphics created on a computer? Or is there some sort of graphics program on the Wii itself that I'm not aware of?

Anyway, I like the Voting Channel. Might be more interesting for me because I'm in Japan, and I kind of feel like it's a cultural experience -- seeing what kind of questions get posted and how people answer is interesting. I have some VC games, but I don't really play them...

no. i disabled connect24 to save power and avoid the blue light. theres no point checking news or weather when i can watch a bulletin on tv every hour or go to a 24 hour channel, if i even wanted to see news all the time. the vc is redundant for me, with XBMC emulating for free.

the internet browser is nice, and really emphasises how lame other consoles are for not having a browser. but if im in the living room then im watching tv or playing games, not using the intertron - i sit in the study at a computer for that.

the only online use it sees is maybe once every few months when theres something on youtube to show people on a big screen.

To be honest onling gaming in Battalion Wars and Mario Strikers is fun for a couple of days until you realize how much you are missing without any voice chat at all. You of course get the crap beat out of you by the hardcore players, so any fun at all is completely removed.

Using StumbleUpon video is basically all I use the internet channel for.

I have had mine connected to the internet since the day I got it. (Plus that way, I was able to get the Internet Channel for free, which is quite nice to have.)

I have never had a problem connecting my Wii to the Wi-fi ever either (have not had a problem with any of my eletronics actually).

are you guys talking about connecting the wii to airport via internet sharing from a mac computer? because ive had my wii connected to my airport base station for many moons now without any problems, all i had to do was enter my wep and i was good to go. ive also used internet sharing a time or two and that took a little extra work, theres a few how-tos covering the subject and it's not much more work than manually entering an IP subnet and dns ports into your wii settings, which only takes about 3x as much time as just entering a wep.
i also have an airport ExTrEmE!@# base station and not an airport express, so maybe it's a bit more friendly to wii wifi?

If you have a desktop connected with an ethernet port that has a wireless card you can use that wireless card as a wireless router. No need to spend an extra $80. That's how I have my iBook and Wii connected into my network with my iMac. It's pretty easy on Macs to do. You can do the same with Window but with a few more hassles. You can even WEP protect it. Okay, there is the extra firewall you get with the router, but I'm not too worried.

I love the nintendo internet interface. if they would make it more functional, i'd like to never leave the wii interface. the news channel is tits on toast, fresh AP copy piped into my box every hour. the slideshow is my nightlight. I have used the check mii out channel to great effect, populating my Mii stable with something like 75% of the same Mii (V, natch). The browser is pretty good (I like the idea of removing the internet from the domain of my desktop).

Hooking it up via mac's airports is a royal pain... I spent long hours trying to do it with mine before I had success. If you have a built-in airport the key is the set the wireless network to "share"... or something...

I mostly use it for weather updates and the VC. I iron my clothes the night before, so I check the Forecast channel. If I'm bored or waiting for a show to come on, I check the News Channel to suck up time. Through the Check Mii Out channel, i've downloaded a number of different Mii's that look really good and went over well with my younger cousins: Snoopy, Mr. T, Charlie Brown, etc...

The voting channel is fun if you like voting in polls, the VC makes the console worth every penny of it's price, and the News channel is a neat little time sink.

I haven't found the weather or internet channels to be all that useful. Although the internet channel is good in a pinch if you get stuck on something in a game and need to make a quick run over to gamefaqs.

Nope, I'd never do internet stuff on a game console. I have a PC for a reason. THe only thing I use the Wii for that connects to the wireless router is the Virtual Console and sometimes a multiplayer game like BWii or Endless Ocean. It functions great when I use it. Could these aspects be better? Sure. Are they terrible to use? Nah.

I used to use the online for Guitar Hero3 but now it's just for VC games(1080*Snowboarding is awesome) and Kotaku and other websites when i don't feel like powering up the main PC. But they need to update their Flash cause i think the Opera system is only running version 6 or 7 and everything else uses 8 and 9 so you can barely watch crappy youtube and nothing else. At least Sony updates their shit weekly.

1) Not so with my Airport Express or my Airport Extreme, the crappy D-link and even Linksys ones I tried before this, as well as a Netgear at a friend's house, all suffered the problems you described. Its very apparent as well, as I tested a VC download on both routers (first the Linksys, then the Airport) and the airport was literally 4x faster.

3) So, you missed the article where it estimated an attach rate of 7.1 games per Wii sold this last December I guess? Feel free to argue that the games that exist aren't worthwhile (and I'll often agree in some cases), but I think if anything that might push some Wii owners into buying more games, not less.

I was loving the internet connection til I finally broke down and bought sf2turbo despite having held off for months. One week later - Super arrives - I want my freaking money back!

that aside, my wii is in the lounge so youtube gets a thorough working out when my housemates are hungover. I've dipped into the mii contest channel and its pretty good fun if you're bored. I also bought Geometry Wars recently and comparing your score with others online (for every individual level in the game) is pretty compulsive stuff!

Well.....the Wii on the internet is pretty crappy.

1) The Wireless isn't reliable.....and its moody on whether it likes to connect or not....NOt to mention its slow. This is a problem it has had with over 4-5 different routers I have tested it with. I had to buy a Ethernet USB Dongle to cure all its probs including speed.

2) The Wii Code system is ridiculous....its not user friendly and 1/2 the time your friends don't get the messages for some reason

3) There are no must play Online games.....maybe that will change with SSBB or MARIO KART....but the problem is....most Wii Owners don't buy alot of games.

Yeah I have to ad to what others have said, I'm surprised you had problems with the Wii and Airport express, what type of password scheme/authentication are you using? I would suggest moving it to a MAC filter setup instead, then you don't have to deal with passwords and 99.9% of others can't access your network anyway.

As far as Wii internet goes, I haven't reconnected mine since I got my disc drive replaced over christmas, not even to redownload my VC games. 'll probably throw it back up once SSBB drops to check out the online, but there's really generally not a reason to be online.

Nintendo has really left a lot to be desired in the online multiplayer area (friend codes), but honestly I use my Wii more online than I do any other console. The web browser is awesome and streaming divx movies wirelessly from my computer is great. I use the news channel quite a bit and my wife loves the voting. Overall, I'm really surprised by how robust the Wii is online.

I'm in the same boat. I always used wired routers since I live in an apartment building with other college students, and I know that if there is an unsecured connection anywhere in this building, someone is leeching off it, so I never wanted to bother with one.

But last night while at best buy I saw a basic wireless linksys router on sale and the first thing that popped into my head was my Wii. I only own two games, and I don't want to buy any VC titles or check the weather. Despite all that I bought the thing and I still don't know why. I guess I figured since Brawl was going to come out soon I might as well get it early and on sale.

I'll probably be taking it back though since it was a bad spur of the moment decision, Brawl is still a little ways out, and I need the $50 to eat for the rest of the week.

I'm looking forward to Brawl, but the online play feature for that game might end up being more of an afterthought than anything else.

Maybe it's just me but in my experience in multiple locations is that the Wii's internet, or at least the Wii Shop is so laughably slow that it literally feels like 28.8k dialup. Bear in mind that in all these locations I've played PC , 360, and PS3 games online at perfectly normal speeds. When I go to the shopping channel though I seem to be starting at that rotating THING for 5 minutes, then when the store front finally loads, it does it again! I mean seriously, the Sega Channel for the Genesis was far faster than this. Don't even get me started on how long downloads take. I really hope that internet speed within actual games isn't so appallingly slow.

Been using it for flash games recently, but that's about it. To be perfectly honest, I'm rather disappointed how Nintendo have utilized internet connectivity outside of VC titles. Maybe I dreamt it, but I remember getting pretty excited over Nintendo telling us how they were going to make WiiConnect24 do neat things. All I've seen it do so far is overheat consoles!

I actually go online on my Wii like everyday. It's faster than turning on my laptop when I just want to do something like browse Kotaku. It's also pretty cool to watch YouTube vids on it. Me and my friends message each other all the time, as well. Hell, we do it just to turn on the blue light and mess with each other at night when we're trying to sleep.

I use the Wii for the stupid "Check Mii Out" channel (I can't help myself -- I enjoy making Miis) and to download the occasional VC game. The downfall is that the Wii gets pretty damn warm when it's in standby mode and I worry it's going to shorten the life of the hardware. I could turn WiiConnect24 off, but then all the fun stuff like Wii Parade goes away. I guess that stuff isn't that fun. I think I'll disable WiiConnect today. It will give me an excuse to use the console -- if only for a minute.

We do the Everybody Votes channel and Show Mii Off channel. We have allot of fun with both. With the Show Mii off channel, we all choose a Mii we like for judging and see how well we did. We also make separate miis for the contests. It is great family fun.

Mine has been connected since day one.

The internet browser plays youtube videos fine, which is fun for dinner parties, you can never laugh at star wars kid too much ;)

Its great as a quick to boot internet appliance when you need to check train timetables and such like. Much faster than either of my Linux notebooks.

Itinial connection to my WLAN was a piece of pie, everything ran very smoothly.

I have it set up to point at a Linux server running Jinzora so that I can stream music through the browser and into my home cinema kit. Works a treat and impresses everyone who sees it.

Plus, the Opera browser supports the HTML5 canvas tag which is convenient at the moment as I am developing stuff using that and wanted to check that the Wii would render it properly.

I've used the online play for GHIII on my Wii and intend to use it a lot for SSBB. But other than that, I've downloaded OoT from the VC, gotten the weather, news, voting, internet, and Mii-show-off channel. I used to check the voting and Mii channels frequently, but I've kind of calmed down recently. Other than to look up the occasional stuff due to my being too lazy to go to my computer, I don't use the internet channel much. I did use it when I was making my Japanese PSN account - I would switch in and out the video input from the Wii with the guide up and the PS3 with the sign in page.

I don't usually connect my Wii to the internet. When I want to download some VC games, I pack the Wii up and head to my friend's house. I don't have internet at home and don't really feel the need to have it. The only time Wii-wise it's been an inconvenience was when I couldn't cash in on those friend vouchers in Metroid Prime 3, and when I couldn't share my Elebits levels.

But I think Brawl will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

I had to do the same thing with my PS2. After the gaming router I got was shit. I ended up connecting my PS2 to my VAIO and doing a network bride.

VC download is a little slow, but the selection is great. The Everybody Votes is fun (but I like statistics, so take that with a grain of salt). Mario Strikers had the occasional bit of lag when it launched, but it's been rock solid since then. Beyond that, that's the extent of my Wii internet connection (browsing the web at 480p is just silly).

I've used it for a handful (3) of VC titles and for my Guitar Hero 3 online profile. I've actually played many online GH3 games with immense success. If that is any indicator, then I would expect the SSMB online to be fluid.

@Atrius: i was determined not to buy a wireless router for that same reason, and in a way i'm glad i didnt, but to spend 70 quid in total on USB lan adaptor and ds wifi adapter seems a bit mad in retrospect when i could have just bought a wireless router and still had devices using the lan ports as needs be, with the occasional ds and wii use on wifi. its like i know i made the right choice, but damn, it cost 70 quid.

Notice how Bashcraft is talking about Wii Sports (A system release) and Mario Galaxy. Surprise, those are the only games I have as well, and in my opinion the only ones worth having. That's pretty shameful for a system that's been out for over a year. SSB is going to be ok at best (but at least fun, and not a collection of minigames). It's no UMK3 or SF.

I'm online with my Wii on a regular basis - reading the news (exciting i know!), checking long range forecasts, browsing the net (Kotaku is a regular stop), then onto a VC title and then into a Wii title.

Having the Wii connected to the Internet is very important in our place. Just because of the variety of Miis we found, the girlfriend-and-I rivalry on the voting channel (she's winning, 150 polls in), and the weather network. I mean, the VC is great - "Do a Barrel Roll", etc. - but I'm really finding Nintendo's bonus online offerings a lot of fun still.

Besides, that new Check Mii Out channel is how I finally got Miis for Stormtroopers, the cast of Family Guy, David Letterman, Spiderman, Dr. Zoidberg, and Robocop. It makes for a fun tennis match is all.

in my rabid determination to get the wii online withinthe shortest time after launch, i imported a lan adapter from japan(wireless is the son of satan) for 40 quid. thats $80. It was worth it. Ish.
Okay it wasn't worth it. Especially now that i have bought the DS/Wii wifi adapter.
"Why didnt you just buy a wireless router?" i hear you ask.

Every once in a while I'll participate in the voting channel, and I've downloaded a few VC titles just for kicks (and to catch up on things I never got to play when I was a kid), but it's not really a regular thing for me to do. As far as games that support online features, I've got NiGHTS set up to access the weather channel for real-time weather effects in My Dream. And, uh... I've tried connecting with a friend of mine in Endless Ocean, but we've yet to have any success with it.

Meh, surfing the web on a TV is lame. I've tried it with the Wii and the PS3. Maybe if you had a wireless mouse/keyboard setup and an HD TV. (Oh and here is a pet peeve. It seems like more and more developers are designing game text to be read in HD. I have a modestly sized SD tv and there are a number of games I have a hard time reading.)

However, I missed several generations of console, including Super Nintendo and the 64, so the VC has been a good thing for me.
