I wish that mature, levelheaded debate was an excellent means of disseminating informed opinions, but that's just not the case. When you fight the idea that videogames are for children and antisocial losers, you're fighting a stereotype, and the only way to overcome that is to show counterexample after counterexample to the public. For example, a news piece on how most gamers these days are young professional men (not teens) would do a lot more to change public perception of the medium than a levelheaded debate about how a game not intended for children could be dangerous to how children perceive sexuality.

Tangentially, while I agree that gamers tend to take a disappointingly close-minded approach to defending their hobby of choice, I don't think there's a valid point to be found that relates the subjects of children, properly rated videogames, and sexuality. One of the ignorant Fox anchors said something to the effect of, "Yeah, it has a rating, but that's not going to stop the kids from playing Daddy's game." Self-contradiction of their "games are for kids" argument aside, the childproofing options on the 360 are just as good as those on any DVD player out there. Will that stop parents from buying R-rated DVDs? No, it just means that Daddy has to be as careful with his M-rated games as he is with his R-rated DVDs. It really is just that simple.

As for the "well, some kids will have them, and other kids will go to their house to play them" argument, well, yes, but what the hell can be done about that? Again, the same thing happens to R-rated movies, but I don't see anyone throwing up their arms in disgust about R-rated movies being available on DVD for kids to watch at unsupervised houses. They even have an abundance of unrated movies readily available at stores like Best Buy these days. You can see much, much more disturbing and graphic imagery on consumer DVDs than in M-rated videogames because consumer stores never carry unrated games, nor anything that warrants an AO rating.

The majority of gamers hate fanboys, they call them idiots for blindly bashing/defending consoles simply because they're made for a company they don't like. Yet most gamers take this fanboy stance with the industry overall, siding with whoever has the pro-game argument regardless how flawed it is, and bearing their e-teeth at whoever says otherwise. It's like the Gerstmann debacle all over again. People lose sight of the fact that he wasn't a great reviewer in the first place, the fact that he showed a blatant lack of professionalism that would get anyone fired and just adopted this giant conspiracy theorist Them vs. Us attitude. CNET did their job (badly, it has to be said), Gerstmann didn't do his. But because he's on the pro-game side, he becomes the martyr. But back to the issue at hand.
I'm not going to be very popular in saying this (or just ignored as usual), but did no one ever stop to think that Fox might have something with what they were saying? Of course the way they went about it was underhanded, deliberately misleading and biased but it does bring up some interesting questions. Some people are saying it's the modern equivalent of looking at dad's Playboy magazines, but I disagree. You stare at a Playboy, you see a naked woman. You stare at a videogame, you see a title screen. Without interaction from the user, nothing would happen.
Of course, the game isn't smut like Fox would have you believe, you don't just stumble over sex scene after sex scene, but unlike God of War which just shows nudity in a mandatory cutscene (it can be skipped of course, I just mean mandatory in the sense that it plays every time), the player has to make an effort in Mass Effect to get to the scene in question. Yes, the scene isn't accessed by something like
"Do you want to have sex?" [ ] Yes [ ] No
But still, it's not like the rigours of a usual relationship occur either. I have a feeling that the scene in question will be more of a "Dude, look what I did!" thing between adolescents treating it more like an achievement than a result of actions taken, which is somewhat of a parallel to real relationships, for some immature people! I remember a quote from a movie whose title escapes me - "Women. Would we talk to them at all if we couldn't screw them?!" Could this kind of attitude affect any kids playing the game? Probably not in the ThisGameWillMakeYourChildASerialKiller... sense, but if they're impressionable enough it might have some minor negative impact regarding hwo relationships typically work.
The game isn't marketed to/meant to be played by kids. Sure, neither are Playboys, but kids get their hands on them anyway. And in most circles of society, games aren't given the same credibility as other media, so parents will buy it unawares and stores will sell it to whoever wants it (this isn't true across the board but it happens). If they don't play it at home they'll play it at a friend's house. It's human nature; once we're told we can't have something, we automatically want it. That's the sad thing about this whole furore, the game will be remembered for the controversy surrounding one scene rather than just being a great game.
But neither side, as usual, are willing to have a proper, regulated debate or any form of mature discourse where at the expense of "losting face" some kind of sensible compromise could be reached. It's just immature one-sided pot shots here and there.

You want respect and recognition, you have to talk the talk. I have a good feeling it doesn't matter who said the message, ones would just rip on the person, just because. Which is rather unfortunate, seeing how you cant have your cake and eat it too. You want gaming to not be trashed, and taken with the same merit books and TV are, then this is where it starts. You want to still have the "underground" feeling with gaming, expect your titles in a few years to be edited heavily for censorship, or worse yet, not even able to hit the store shelves due to being flat out banned.

Or just pray a new form of entertainment pops up that will get the attention away from the hobby you enjoy (or enjoy being cynical in). I swear man, I have yet to see a hobby, outside of pro sports, that people cannibalize each other more often than not.

It would sound that way only if you yourself weren't erudite. Educating yourself enables you to speak more efficiently and eloquently and use a single word where you'd otherwise have to use ten just to get a point across to those who choose not to educate themselves.

Every household has a dictionary, and there are at least several online, including Merriam-Webster. That kind of knowledge is free. Take advantage of it and you'll earn yourself an appreciation of Sessler's range while expanding your own. :-) Sessler took advantage of it.

A good game needs a good premise, and that premise should be fleshed out with a story which needs to be comprised of human elements so we can empathise with the characters and add a challenge to a game greater than knowing which buttons to press and when, which four items need to be combined to produce a vital tool to solve a puzzle, or which research tree will lead me the fastest to map-dominating technology.

Does a good story need sex? No, not as a rule. Did Mass Effect specifically need a short sex scene? Eh, maybe not - I don't think the people who didn't unlock it are missing anything but the ten gamer points the Paramour achievement is worth. However, it was a welcome addition, it added to our understanding of how the characters in that situation would feel, and contributed to what I feel was a worthwhile, meaningful experience. The story was satisfying.

Why anyone would deny themselves that in favour of 100% action because they can "watch a DVD" to watch a story completely baffles me.

That said, I'm pretty tired of this Mass Effect scandal. I finished the game once and fully intend to do so again at some point, but I'm pretty bored with this collective panty-bunching that seems to be going on. The problem isn't with Mass Effect, or even gaming in general. It's simply the fact that there are some people who like to be noticed and institutions like Fox are ready to take advantage of this.
Sex isn't the big seller, fear is. Sensationalist news stories give people something to fear - video gaming is just the Big Bad we have to fear today, and in turn everything we fear is caused by gaming. What was the first thing we blamed on gaming? Columbine, or something even earlier?
In today's world, we'd be led to believe games are responsible for teenage promiscuity, violent rampages, murders, drug abuse, childhood obesity, and the list probably goes on. All because a few people looked for a place to lay blame when something went wrong in their lives.
Children don't see sex in a game and start banging their classmates. Hell, I was trying to get laid from age 11, and my first gaming console was a PS2 which I bought at age 19. I didn't even have access to the internet until I was 15.
Any violent act purportedly stemming from a connection with videogames has either been shown to be false (e.g.: Jack Thompson on the Virginia Tech shootings) or self evident that the criminal was already unbalanced and could really have benefited more from some supervision.

I won't go on, I'm way too far off thread as it is. The point is, all forms of media have suffered from this horseshit at some point, especially poor innocent music. It survived that 50's and 60's, thankfully the world was not destroyed because someone saw Elvis doing one pelvic thrust too many, or the Beatles so incredibly ripped off their tits that they couldn't act straight in their own music videos.

What's going to replace video games, I wonder. Is there any hope whatsoever we'll give up on these crusades and take responsibility for ourselves?

While Sessler's editorial/rant was intelligent and dead on, it falls under "preaching to the choir". It's unfortunate that the gaming community has no good way of reaching out to the ignorant sections of our populace. For instance, Larwrence's pseudo-apology was a good start, but it was published in the NYT. I don't have numbers for this, but I would guess that, given the relative conservatism of Fox and the relative liberalism of the NYT, there's not a lot of overlap in their demographics. And I rather doubt EA will ever get that retraction out of Fox.

They invite people onto their shows for debates but constantly interrupt their guests and each other; nobody gets their point across a majority of the time. The only thing that sets these Cable News Channels apart from Jerry Springer is the lack of flying chairs and half nude obese men/women throwing them.

The art of conversation is non-existent when it comes to Fox,CNN,(insert cable news channel here).

Aren't there more important things going on in the world to report on, I hear there's a war going on. They really had to try and make a big deal out of a obscure PG-13 sex scene?
