@nutmaniv: Early adopters of all kinds will always be screwed. And quite frankly, I'm tired of hearing the hope for a firmware update. It's true that a firmware update would fix problems, but the fact that we have to wait or hope for one doesn't prove much for that unless it's a product that will stay on the market for a long time as it's currently released model (the PS3, unlike various blu-ray players that keep having new ones pumped out--it's still a capitalist's market). If they keep building new things, of course older models will become obsolete and have less attention devoted to.

HD-DVD didn't screw everyone over, but it just ate it. There has to be a loser somewhere if a winner is needed.

of course, early standalone blu-ray player owners got screwed with limited upgradability. no web based functions for you (unless you bought the ps3 version blu-ray player that also plays games.

i'll put my support into one format, blu-ray since it came with my ps3 and since i purchased about 25 blu-ray movies in december alone.

Um no one will be screwed over by the 51gb discs. A firmware update will make all hd dvd players compatible with it. The funny thing about your comment is that hd dvd has not screwed its adopters like that, and probably wont. Blu ray on the other hand COMPLETELY screwed ALL of its standalone early adopters with the profile updates. The PS3 is still the only safe player.

If the technology gets any more advanced, I'd like to see an upgrade program for old PS3s. The format is more controlled than DVD, so making leaps and bounds forward in technology and cutting the price by a ton is going to really piss off early adopters if they have a crappy original model and have to be more for a new one, albeit cheaper than before.

@jaworsky: The way that this statement was written is confusing and a little misleading.

The laser hasn't been changed so it can now read organic dye. The laser is the same frequency. It's that there are new photosensitive organic dyes that work at the frequency of blue lasers which allow existing DVD manufacturing lines to be easily retooled. The author of the article should have made two separate statements.

You will still be able to read these discs with older Blu-ray players.

All those waiting for the PS3 to drop to $300 are hypocrites. You can't get a 360 with the same feature set as the PS3 for $400 let alone $300.

Make no mistakes about it, Xbox Live is a great online experience in many areas but once you start breaking it down there's only a few things XBL offers that Sony doesn't have now but will eventually start offering.

Without getting into that argument, if you bought a 360 today you'd be spending over $700 (and that's including the Premium SKU; the Elite would be nearly $800) to get everything you get with a $400 PS3.

I won't bore everyone with the obvious math but a price drop would only help the current surge the PS3 is enjoying . Having said that, if you're waiting for it to get lower because you feel like the price SHOULD be that low you're crazy-insane-stupid-brainless-moronic... (pick one).

$299 is the magic price for me when I will finally jump in (and you better give me my rumble too!). I anticipate it will still be a while yet, but earlier would be a nice surprise.

I doubt any but the most naive early adopters feel screwed. As others have said it is part of the process. Technically I would be an early adopter of the 360 and hd-dvd and while there are plenty of reasons I could feel slighted (hd-dvd bad news, hdmi, price drops, etc), I have gotten probably the best entertainment per dollar value with that purchase.

If I had picked up a PS3 I would have felt the same about that, it is just that I didn't have the extra cash to justify it.

Actually as nice as it is for Sony that the new diode allows for "traditional" plants to make BDs the problem is that there are still several million players out there that don't have it, unless they want to have tons of returns because the disc can't be played it doesn't really help Sony a lot.

BTW, congrats to Sony, should this be your goal then you have just EOLed the only "future proof" player you have: The PS3.

The comment about the lasers being able to read organic dye coating (Which is BD Standard) is not that bigger ones can't (Surprise: Guess how BD Disks are being manufactured now) is that considering the smaller lens area these ones will have no problems reading organic dye coated disks pressed on standard DVD presses.

@NeoAkira: the reason the 40gb ps3 doesn't play ps2 games (but plays ps1 games) is that Sony want to encourage the cheapskates who buy it to move to ps3. and it plays ps1 because it's in the core software and there is no reason to remove it and make separate the firmwares. if you don't know the firmwares don't differ by regions, even though they sometimes get released in different dates.

Higher capacity HDD is more a matter of the HDD price comming down. Since you can swap that part out for whatever HDD you want, i'm not sure why they would ever increase the size of it.

Getting BC back at this point is probabaly going to be up to them writing a really, REALLY good emulator for the Cell/RSX.

Well considering I only had to buy one PS3 for local and import PS3 games, and since I was able to acquire a 60GB model allowing me to sell my old 300001 PS2 with network adapter, I feel like I got a good deal on mine.

I'm curious if Sony's production costs will reach the point where they can start adding stuff in for a cheap affordable price. Such as a high capacity hard drive and reinclusion of the Cell for PS2 backwards compatibility.
Perhaps also bundling in the Eye and a wireless headset.

@mast3r_blast3r: exactly. i can name some instances right off the bat: first gen DS, first gen PS2, 360... i knew i wouldn't mind as these were the risks i was willing to take. i just wanted the hardware and if there was a reason to justify purchasing a later generation of a gaming platform, i'd sell my current one and get a new one. i know others may not have the $ to throw around for these types of sacrifices, so i suggest waiting a bit (a year or two) before the platform you're interested in matures

Ye-owch, I'm getting pretty lambasted.

From my perspective, if I had spent a lot of money on a launch PS3, I would be feeling pretty cruddy right now, I would have just assumed that there would be other who would feel the same way. I guess it's because the "extra" features the PS3 has (Blu-ray player, PS2 BC) aren't really huge selling points for me, namely because I don't watch many movies and don't mind leaving my PS2 hooked up.

It's not that I'm saying early adopters didn't know the price would go down eventually (I'm sure they all did), but having the price cut in half in less than two years is unprecendeted for any successful game system in recent memory (not saying the PS3 is a flop, BTW)

I'm an early adopter as well,and i paid the launch price. However i'm just happy about all the great news fo sony lately. The smaller lasers will in time allows cheaper ps3's which means more systems sold. That in turn means more developers, better games and better online experiances (debatable. But, it really does seem like 2008 will be the year of the ps3, and even possibly 2009 at the rate things are going.

@Sportyboard: Wait, didn't early adopters get extra features on their PS3 like, they can play PS2 games? As far as I can see, it's a win/win situation for Early Adopters who got all that extra good and newcomers who just want the system and pay less.

@jaworsky: Exactly ... you can't change technology in the middle. If they start pressing Blu-ray discs my PS3 can't read, you can bet I'll be pissed. That's the dirty little secret of Blu-ray, the technology is still incomplete. There is no promise that your Blu-ray player today will work with the discs tomorrow. Very scary.

@Kyle81: It's a bad business move to factor any price cuts for 2008. Sony has a lot of things on their horizon and the Blu-Ray format is only part of it. I bet that Sony will do nothing this year and around Q3 2008 they might make announcement for what they will offer in 2009, depending on how well the PS3 has sold. If they sell well Sony will offer Slim and innovative PS3s, if not you can expect them to offer more damatic price cuts to make them more reasonable.

I'm an early adopter and I'm fine with the price going down. I also have a 60 GB, so I'm happy. Every one knows the price will be lower if you wait. More PS3 sold can only be a good thing for PS3 owners. Though I don't believe it's going to happen this month anyway.

I paid $500 for my 60GB and don't feel screwed at all. I enjoy knowing more people are playing the great games on the system and watching blu-ray movies. I've used my PS3 for countless hours either gaming or watching movies so I have def gotten my $500 out of it already.

@Snappywave: Not to hard to believe. The PS3 originally cost about 800 to make and now they have supposedly brought down the production costs to 400. With SONY moving to smaller chips and stuff like these cheaper blu ray drives, the costs to make the PS3's will just go down.

They were willing to lose 200 dollars each PS3, and if they want to compete, they might as well keep cutting the price as long as they cut costs to go with it.
